St. John, home to the Virgin Islands National Park, is easy to explore when you have your own transportation. Two main roads cross the island; one road runs across the center of the island and another along the north shore. However, if you want to get off the main roads, many other trails and dirt roads can take you through magnificent unspoiled forests, weaving through scenic lookout points, and ending at the shoreline of a fabulous beach. Make sure you have a four-wheel drive jeep for a couple of reasons. First, some island roads are rough and four wheel drive greatly enhances your driving ability. Second, St John and Tortola have some steep hills plus concrete roads that get very slippery when it rains. You will definitely appreciate the added traction and safety of four wheel drive should you get caught driving in a cloudburst.

If you are debating renting a jeep versus public transportation, here is a thought. Taxis and bus service to remote areas of the island do not exist. If you are planning on staying near your Caribbean vacation rental then you can get away with not renting a car. But, if you want to explore the island at your own pace and discover the beauty of unspoiled beaches and tropical forest, then a four-wheel drive jeep is for you. Here are a couple of driving facts for tourists to St. John:

Driving in the Virgin Islands is on the left side of the road.

Vehicles are typical American cars with left side steering.

Valid US and international driver’s licenses can be used while visiting the Virgin Islands for up to 90 days.

Jeep reservations are made at no extra charge and the experienced consultants there can also help you to book the perfect Caribbean vacation with a perfectly matched vacation rental and information on St. Johns many activities.

Beachgoers from around the globe know that St. John is at the top of the list when it comes to phenomenal island locales. The island’s natural beauty is challenged only by the amazing Caribbean sea that surrounds it. Because nearly two thirds of the island is designated as a U.S. National Park, it is one of the most scenic and unspoiled islands in the Caribbean. The weather is beautiful throughout the year, with temperatures hovering in the low 80’s.

Guests who choose to experience the Caribbean in style often recommend one of the amazing St. John vacation rental properties. Many offer unmatched views, private swimming pools, outdoor showers, and more! Whether you choose to be pampered at a luxury resort, or have a whole island villa to yourself, you’re sure to be pleased with your taste of island life. While the rentals do come fully-equipped with kitchens, many guests choose to let someone else handle the meal plans. With over 35 restaurants to choose from, there is no shortage of cuisine to sample.

Outdoor activities are a favorite way to pass the time in the Virgin Islands. Some consider a great book in a hammock as active as they’d like to get, while others opt to try out some of the area’s favorite water sports. Some favorite water activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, and fishing. A trip below the surface of the water will show you the island from a whole new perspective! The countless tropical fish swimming around, beautiful coral clusters, and variety of marine life continues to keep both visitors and locals in awe of the beauty of the Caribbean.

Shoppers will enjoy Mongoose Junction, located in Cruz Bay. Offering a variety of goods in a beautifully crafted shopping village, you’re sure to find that perfect item to take home with you at Mongoose Junction!

Be sure to set aside some time to explore some of the many amazing beaches while visiting St. John. Words and photos do the island no justice when trying to explain the unmatched beauty of this island paradise! Be sure to look out for one the wild donkeys that roam the island for a fun diversion from your average beach vacation.

What is your favorite thing about St. John? The beaches? The shopping? The activities? Something we’ve missed?

I’ve never been diving – but it sounds like so much fun – especially if the water is warm. I was researching an article about Grand Cayman and thought the warm blue waters looked so inviting. I found some really informative websites that tell about the different areas to dive on Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman is a small island – with a wide variety of activities to keep any traveler interested and entertained. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway or the adventure of a lifetime – consider a trip to Grand Cayman – you wont be disappointed.

For the leisure traveler – enjoy a day on Seven Mile Beach and build an elaborate sand castle. For a change of scenery – move around the north tip of the island to Rum Point and laze the day away next to aqua-blue waters. All of the beaches on Grand Cayman are public up to the high water mark – so find a public access and go exploring.

Leisure travelers will also enjoy the duty-free shopping in George Town. Here you’ll find the best duty-free selection in the Caribbean. Enjoy browsing through a good selection of traditional duty free items such as watches, china and crystal, perfumes and fine jewellery-including authentic treasure coin jewelry.

Grand Cayman is an adventure-junkie mecca. Enjoy World-Class scuba diving and snorkeling – along with para-sailing, sea kayaking, sailing and jet ski rentals. There are a wide variety of vendors along Seven Mile Beach – check with your accommodation provider for their recommendations and suggestions.

The highlight of any Grand Cayman vacation is a boat trip into the North Sound. Learn to dive for conch (in season), enjoy a seafood lunch prepared by your crew, then snorkel the reef and “Coral Gardens.” All trips include a stop at famous Stingray City where you can play with and feed the String rays in shallow water.

Overall – Grand Cayman has something for everyone – couples and families – honeymooners and retirees.

Your schedule miraculously clears for the upcoming 4 day weekend – what kind of fun can you plan? How about a last minute Caribbean vacation to the beautiful island of St. John? Yes – certain times of the year planning a last minute trip can prove to be difficult and expensive – but knowing where to go and who to ask can make planning an impromptu trip easy and exciting.

Take stock of what is available. Do you have some frequent flier miles you can cash in? Don’t forget about the voucher from that last trip you took and got bumped to a later flight because of the weather or an overbooking. Sometimes last minute trips become expensive because the airfare is outrageous. If you’re traveling in off season, last minute fares could save you money, the airlines will be looking to fill empty seats.

Where do you want to go? The U.S. Virgin Islands offer a great getaway without a lot of hassle. and best of all – you DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT! That’s right, if you visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, you don’t need to hassle with a passport. As of January 2007 about 73% of Americans did NOT have a passport.
You have four days, what do you want to do? A day on the beach is a must. What about some shopping or snorkeling? Do you like to golf or fish? Plan some time for laying in a hammock by the villa and getting some much deserved rest. Visit the island travel pages to plan some of the activities you’d like to try. Because you’re traveling last minute, it might be a good idea to call and be sure you can book a tee time or a trip with one of the deep sea fishing charter companies.

All in all – a last minute trip is within reach if you have realistic expectations and you prepare accordingly. Don’t expect the trip of a lifetime, you didn’t have time to plan all of the activities you’d have to try to make it unforgettable – but you can get a taste of life on St. John and enjoy yourself away from the rat-race for a few days.

Beach Vacations
Beach resorts can be perfect for your next family vacation getaway. Some of the best resorts are in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

Mexico
Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations. It is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Los Cabos features luxury hotels, championship golf courses and some of the best sport fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking and much more.

The Caribbean
The Cayman Islands offer many things for many people. 99% of the travelers visit Grand Cayman Island. It is easy to see why people go here. Of the islands this island offers the most when it comes to resorts and hotels. The fabulous snorkeling and scuba diving is not to be missed. When diving, you will think you are in a pet shop aquarium. The fish are abundant and the stingrays are gentle and fun to watch. If time permits, rent a Jeep and cruise around the Island.

Hawaii
Hawaii offers many choices for the traveling family. Each island is unique and offers something for everyone. Kauai is less touristy but still offers much to do. The surfing and snorkeling are not to be missed. Be sure to take a day and drive up to Waimea Canyon. This canyon offers many photo opportunities, and spots to get out and hike near beautiful waterfalls. Maui offers white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Maui also offers great sightseeing and wonderful shopping. Of the islands, Hawaii, also known as “The Big Island” is the largest. Here you can visit the only active volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. You will also find wonderful resorts, pristine beaches, great nightlife, fine dining and shopping.

South Carolina

Hilton Head Island offers a great beach vacation location – with plenty to do for romantic couples or families. There are a ton of activities and attractions in and around Hilton Head Island that will give both the young and the young at heart plenty to fill their days. Summer mid-day temperatures hover around 85-90 degrees – warm but perfect for beachcombing and swimming or kayaking in the surf or on the sound. Water temperatures average in the 80s from June through September so summer is a perfect time to visit.
