The peaceful elegance and intriguing scenery of the island’s beaches allows locals and guests the opportunity to experience the gift that Mother Nature has bestowed upon the treasured island of Maui.

Beginning in the 1700s Murrells Inlet made its debut in the rice industry and had cultivated close to 47 million pounds of rice by 1850. This lucrative business made many South Carolina rice planters very wealthy including one Joseph Alston, who eventually became South Carolina’s governor. To many people’s surprise, during this time, rice planters in South Carolina became wealthier and more powerful than their tobacco and sugar plantation counterparts in the southeast. Unfortunately, the success and wealth of rice plantations came to an abrupt halt in 1863 when the Civil War intruded on the shores of Murrells Inlet. Confederate troops were secretly using the inlet as a port to send products such as cotton to England in exchange for medicine, food and other war supplies. When the Union learned of this their warships attacked the confederate blockade destroying part of the inlet and a large portion of the rice industry. Although no one could predict this at the time, between the Civil War and a series of hurricanes that followed, South Carolina’s rice industry would be completely gone by 1916.

Following the Civil War, South Carolina in general and Murrells Inlet specifically got into the commercial fishing industry and by 1914 were offering fishing excursions as a recreational opportunity for guests and locals of Murrells Inlet. The commercial fishing industry became an advantageous market for Murrells Inlet although it never became the behemoth that the rice plantations developed into. As a couple decades past on and the Great Depression assaulted the majority of the United States, Murrells Inlet had a bit of good fortune in New York millionaire, Archer Milton Huntington when he rolled into town. Huntington had plans to build an audacious compound for himself and his wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Mr. Huntington commissioned all local workers to develop his 9,000 acre estate including brick masons, carpenters, landscapers and painters. Not only did he spend millions of dollars on his homestead, he also funded a community center, medical clinic and church for the people of Murrells Inlet.

Murrells Inlet is a hidden gem of abundant history and enchanting stories for all ages to enjoy. Just 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet is an ideal family vacation destination.

Imagine my surprise to learn that the Alabama Gulf Coast also has a rich history where the landscape was inhabited by sloth, mammoth and mastodons!

Having such a well-thought out biking system allows Hilton Head Island to reduce traffic and congestion that are common in resort towns. Known as “The Soul of Seattle,” Pike Place Market was originally brought to life on August 17, 1907 when farmers brought their produce directly to the people of Seattle who showed up in overwhelming numbers. The farmers’ goods were sold out by 11:00 am thus beginning a supply and demand market that opened its own building with every space filled by the end of that first year. Today, the market is internationally known as America’s premier farmers’ market housing over 200 year round businesses.

“The Market,” as it is known by the locals, pulls in nearly 10 million visitors a year to enjoy shopping, dining, and entertainment provided by street performers and musicians. The Market remains open during the renovation and with Phase II of IV wrapping up this month many businesses will be relocated back to their original locations and seasonal vendors returning. As early as 4500BC, coastal cultures like in China, Greece and many others utilized scuba diving as a way to gather food, and participate in commerce and warfare.  These cultures are not the only ones who saw scuba as a convenient way to attack their enemies. In the Trojan Wars, divers would incapacitate enemy ships by cutting holes into their boats or cutting anchor ropes. Greek history tells of fishermen who would “dive” into deeper parts of the ocean by using a heavy boulder to sink into the waters. The physical dangers of diving without protection were not known at the time. Greece also notes the first instance of utilizing diving in warfare during the siege at Syracuse. Around 360BC, according to the writings of Aristotle, attempts to provide divers with a breathing mechanism were made in the form of a kettle that was filled with air and lowered down with the diver.

From 1300 through the late 1500s and mid 1600s, many creators like Leonardo Da Vinci, Guglielmo de Loreno and others perfected the idea of a diving bell and scuba suit. The credit of the first true diving bell goes to de Loreno. Of course, many advances and improvements to scuba have been made since the time of these thinkers. Now diving is safe and can be enjoyed as a leisure activity for people of all ages. While many diving spots have popped up on the map around the world, some of the most glorious waves will be caught at Kihei, Maui.

The eastern edge this recent closure affected Cape San Blas on Florida Panhandle’s Forgotten Coast. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection(DEP) confirmed reports of tar balls near Pensacola, FL, however local Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency are monitoring the air and water quality closely in Cape San Blas, and so far the beaches remain beautiful and open. According to a statement by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman, Rodney Barreto, “Both the water and fish have been thoroughly tested and Florida’s seafood is certified good to eat and great tasting.”

Moving to Colorado after living in the Midwest farmland for many years has made me realize that you can have a vacation nearly every weekend when places are within easy driving distance.  It seems like the same would be true for people in and around the Deep Creek Lake area.  Iowa Farmlands?  Not so much.  I used to have to drive at least 40, if not 90 miles, just to reach the nearest interstate that would then take me another sizeable distance to some place you actually wanted to visit!

Just a shed

Well, it turned out this “cabin” was really a tin tool shed with half of the square footage taken up by lawn and garden equipment.  The other half, albeit tin on the outside, was very cabin-esque on the inside.   Although I ended up renting the space and loving the summer I spent there, it definitely wasn’t what I expected when I heard it called a “cabin.”  Pigeon Forge cabin rentals offered by Cabins USA, on the other hand, are the opposite of what my cabin was!  They’re not only comfortable and luxurious on the inside; complete with all the amenities of home, they’re also cabins on the outside!

                History buffs and speed demons can step back in time with a ride in the Bird of Paradise.  This open cockpit biplane built in 1928 is sure to please the thrill seeker.  I will offer this one bit of advice, however. It may sound good to have the wind in your hair until you land and have to pull a comb through it!  One of my first flights was in an open cockpit airplane when I was about six years old and the most lasting memory I still have (many years later) is the drama of getting my long hair combed out upon landing.  Don’t let this be the only memory you take away from this high-flying experience.  Instead take away a certificate and photo that is awarded to all who fly in this historical machine.

                If staying on land is more your family’s style then be sure and plan a trip to the Track Family Recreation Center.  Plenty of action for kids of all ages whether you’re a speed demon on the go-cart tracks or prefer the slower pace of miniature golf.  You’re family will have so much fun here they may even forget that there are beautiful beaches to play on too!

                Does your family enjoy music and want to take advantage of fewer crowds?  Then bring them down for the annual, 10 day Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival held every November.  Venues all along the coast offer up a unique opportunity to see and hear songwriters perform the songs that became some of America’s biggest hits.  Songwriters perform in restaurants, bars and hang-outs along the coast, so porta-potty festival this is not!  Add to that little to no cover charge and you have the makings for a wonderful beach vacation full of Orange Beach, Alabama Concerts.  What a great way to get the wiggles out before hunkering down for the winter.

Now that the snow has thawed, Colorado locals are hanging up their skis and dusting off their summer gear to enjoy the beauty, adventure, and fun that the state has to offer during the summer months.  A favorite activity of both locals and visitors alike, is taking a step back into Colorado’s wild past.  Visiting historic landmarks and vacationing at dude ranches are two of the most popular ways to do this.  Colorado has a rich and colorful history, take a step into any mountain town, and you’ll see the signs of an era long gone.  Bars owned by men like Doc Holliday that still have bullets lodged in the cieling, historic homes, abandoned mines are abundant throughout the mountain region.

Another fun way to get a taste of old Colorado is to take part in one of the state’s dude ranch vacations.  The state is home to over 30 guest ranches, varying in size and number of amenities.  Some of our favorites even feature spa services to enjoy after a long day on the trail!  (Okay, maybe not completely authentic, but ranching is hard work!)  Most ranches provide amazing accommodations, three meals a day, and a variety of ranching activities to enjoy.  These trips are an excellent way to get the whole family engaged in the vacation experience, with something for everyone.  You can participate in ranch activities at your leisure, so you still have time to take in the amazing scenery or go play in the river for an afternoon or two.

I love vacation rentals.  I have a husband, 2 kids – and a couple dogs – so when we vacation it’s a moving department store/zoological park.  We are dragging around the favorite bunny for sleeping, the special pillow, extra pup treats and the video games.  That’s a bunch of junk to cram in your run-of-the-mill hotel room.  Vacation Rentals are the perfect alternative – there’s plenty of room, you can cook breakfast (or throw donuts at everyone, including the dogs) so you dont have to get up at 7am while you’re on VACATION.  Bonus points – they usually have a washer and dryer – and more than one TV.  It’s like being at home – but you’re not!  A vacation rental at the beach is a necessity – here’s why:

• Beaches mean sand, and sand gets EVERYWHERE.  Being able to wash off and throw the sandy beach stuff in the washing machine is priceless.

• More and more vacation rentals are pet-friendly.  Many more so than hotels.  It’s a bonus when every member of the family can enjoy the vacation.  If you need to, you can even throw the dog in the tub!

• Shells are everywhere – and believe it or not - even the dead ones stink.  LUckily in a vacation rental – you probably have room to bleach them BEFORE you cram them in your suitcase for a day of traveling – leaving your clothing and other things smelling decidedly “funky”

• Privacy and convenience are important when we’re on vacation.  I love having a little beach cottage we can sit on the back deck and the kids can run on the beach til they pass out.  Hotels usually involve a lengthy gathering of junk and hauling it down to the beach – and lots of “back and forthing” to restroom, eat, etc.  If you’re staying ON the beach – you’re right there – no need to travel far to soak your feet.

One of my family’s favorite beach-type pass times is shelling. We hit the beach and drag great gobs of different shells back to the vacation rental – only to be forced to leave 90% behind because we cant pack them all – or they smell funny.

I did find out you can clean seashells so they don’t smell – but picking up “dead shells” is your best bet for this, although that doesn’t guarantee they’ll be ’stink free’.

Depending upon what part of the states you visit, some of the shells you find are pretty dull. The Oregon coast for example delivers a vast number of mussles – which are pretty neat with their iridescent colors – but after you’ve seen a hundred of those, big deal!

So where else can you go to spend hours picking through shells on the beach. I actually did a search for best shelling beaches in Florida and found out the “Lee Island Coast” in Southwest Florida was actually one of the best places in the WORLD for shelling. Featuring nearly 100 barrier islands, some of the more familiar names would be Sanibel Island, Marco Island and Captiva Island.

Plan your shelling for low tide, so check out the tide tables before you leave on vacation – that way you’ll know the best time of day to hit the beach with your pail. You can also have better luck by checking out the “lay of the land” so to speak. One good spot is where the waves break over as they come up on the beach, it will look like a slight “ditch” just past the water line.
Be forewarned, live shelling is banned – this means if there’s a critter, or a portion of a critter inside, leave it alone!

You can actually “charter” a guide to take you shelling after kayaking to a barrier island. Or visit a “shell museum” – that’s some hard core shelling action!

There are over 400 species of shells that can be found int he area – from the common scallop to something called the brown speckled junonia – but when I search for that type of shell – all I get are images of butterflies – so that one must be pretty rare. You can also expect to find conch and sand dollars in abundance.

When you consider hitting the Lee Island Coast – I always recommend vacation rentals for your stay.  I found a few that are right on the gulf beach and offer great convenience to shelling.  Consider a Marco Island Condo Rental at South Seas on the Beach.  Captiva Island Vacation Rentals also has some nice places on the sand.

 If you’re into adventure – try out Adventure Cove (warning there’s music on that site!).  This entertainment center has a water park, a parachute ride, laser tag, a 4D movie theatre, bumper cars, virtual roller coasters and more.  You could spend a whole day here and not run out of fun stuff to do before you ran out of the energy needed to do them all!

The Art Cafe is a hit with everyone – select your own potter and paint it – make your OWN Hilton Head souvenir for Grandma and Grandpa – it’s the perfect gift.

 The Coastal Discovery Musem is open year round and offers a great variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits.  There are activity centers and you can sign up for one or more of 11 different cruises that take you around the island to learn more about the unique history, flora and fauna.

Saddle up for a ride through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve with Lawton Stables (843) 671-2586.  Sea Horse Farms (843)681-7746) offers beach rides.  Keep in mind, minimum age for trail rides from both purveyors is 8-years-old.

If you’re going to be on-island from June through August – the kids might enjoy some Kayak lessons or even Kayak Camp.  Outside Hilton Head offers something for kids starting at age SEVEN!

If you’re staying at a resort some will offer on-site kid’s programs – but if you’re choosing a vacation rental or other lodging – consider putting together a variety of activities and making your own kid camp!  I always recommend vacation rentals as I love to have a kitchen and not have to rush to breakfast when the kids’ feet hit the floor.

Located on the southern-most end of North Carolina’s brunswick Islands, Sunset Beach offers one of the most soothing beach getaways you will experience. As you cross the one land pontoon bridge over the salt marsh, you’re entering a different world – one of laid back atmosphere and quiet relaxation.

Lodging provides a variety of choices. A beach cottage or condo looks to be your best bet. Most local rental agencies run specials based on season. Low season for a Sunset Beach NC Vacation Rental would be Jan 1 to May 19 and Sept 1 to Dec. 31. High season would be June 9 to August 18 and Value Season would be some weeks in May June & August – depending upon the rental company and their inventory.

This is the ultimate commercial for why Jackson is so much fun in the summer. I cant imagine having a better time with friends and family. Some best bets from our visit and from reviews I’ve read lately are:

Get a vacation rental – even though the food is great here, it can be expensive. If you choose a condo or home rental you will have a kitchen to cook a few meals in, even if you just do breakfast in you can save a good deal of money.

If you’re headed to Grand Teton or Yellowstone, leave early. Summer time traffic in both parks can be a bit of a problem sometimes, so be prepared to wait and be prepared to have FUN!

Book your “extra-curricular” activities before you get there. Rafting, climbing and other types of activities book up quick, if you make reservations for these things before you even get to Jackson you’re guaranteed the chance to participate.

The animals are WILD, people – dont try to feed them skittles or some other sort of “people food.” Buffalo are not nice animals, they’re beautiful, but mean – stay away! Same with elk and moose.

Most of all, come with a few extra memory sticks for the camera, let loose and have a good time – you wont regret it.

Lunch – We enjoyed the Cadillac Grille when we were there, but the Tripadvisor.com reviews are mixed a bit. Their burgers over at Billy’s Giant Hamburgers were great (one side is the grille, one side is the hamburger joint)!
Dinner – We liked the Mangy Moose – and they have decent Tripadvisor reviews. The gift shop that is attached is great fun also.

Wagon Wheel Village – Motel rooms for budget travelers to Jackson – I havent stayed here but they have pretty good reviews in Tripadvisor.

This is a video of the beach in winter – but it still looks like fun – more fun when it’s 80 degrees though!

Further research revealed average summer temperatures in the 80’s in July and the average humidity is about on par with the rest of the US.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument
This unexpected adventure is a huge caldera and, although the 500 square mile volcano that lies beneath this land hasn’t erupted in about 1300 years, it is still a seismically and geographically active area. You’ll find lakes, waterfalls, basalt flows, fissures, and many other weird and wild geological features, including more than 400 cinder cones. To children, this is the land of the dinosaurs and we all know how much they love those creatures.

Upper Deschutes River Rafting
For a sweet snack of whitewater rafting, try this scenic stretch of river just outside of Bend. It’ll give you the taste a whitewater without scaring the pants off you and it’s short enough that you won’t suffer much if you find out rafting is not for you. It’s a great adventure for the kids, who don’t need to do anything but hold on and screech with joy.

Rainy Day Fun
The High Desert Museum, just outside of Bend, is about a 10 minute drive down South Highway 97. Their daily wildlife programs are always a big hit with the kids and there’s enough interesting stuff to see and do to make those rainy day, “what are we going to do?” blues morph into fond memories.

Enjoy a trip to this “hamlet” of over 200,000 people just 2 1/2 hours north of Chicago and you’ll be surprised to find out that there are a host of activities for everyone – whether you’re a family-group or a business traveler.

The Henry Vilas Zoo is a great stop for young and old. They started as a family operation in 1911 and still runs today on the premise that the zoo should be accessible to everyone – regardless of income or status. Therefore, keeping with an almost 100 year tradition, Zoo admission is completely free – that’s right FREE. What a great way to spend the day enjoying the spring sun or fall colors.

The Overture Preforming Arts Complex is a premier venue for culture and entertainment in Madison. Enjoy performances by the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Madison Ballet, or even the visiting Chicago Symphony Orchestra on occasion. There is always a show to see or a symphony to enjoy while you’re vacationing in the Madison area.

From water parks and botanical gardens to festivals and museums – Madison offers a plethora of choices for the young and old. One of the best times to visit Madison is in the fall – go check out the Taste of Madison Festival September 1&2, 2007 and enjoy more than 60 restaurant vendors, 16 beverage vendors and 4 entertainment stages. Admission to the festival is free – and vendors will be selling their wares priced anywhere from $1 to $4.

Golf
Myrtle Beach is like an amusement park for golfers. The venue provides a showcase for nearly every big name links designer and you get a phenomenal choice of styles and terrain. The weather can occasionally shut you out, but the mild climate generally allows for year round play. That’s a plus, since, with over 120 courses, you can play a different one every day for 4 months without replaying a single hole. There’s a lot of competition in the area and you’ll find the best deals by booking one of the many Myrtle Beach golf specials available online.

Baseball
Ever heard of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans? They’re a farm team for the Atlanta Braves and play in the Carolina League against other minor league teams at the 4,300 seat Coastal Federal Field. Fans large and small enjoy the hometown feel of the scene where they can watch and meet soon-to-be stars. Another cool to-do for hardball freaks is The Ripken Experience Cal Ripken’s new youth tourney center in Myrtle Beach.

Okay, listen up. I’m only going to whisper this secret to you once, “Ruby Canyon and Horsethief Canyon”. This incredible float, just west of Grand Junction, Colorado is a rafting experience extrordinaire.

For 26 miles, the Colorado river slices through a dreamlike southwestern landscape of towering canyons and ageless black rock formations. Except during extreme spring run-off, the pace is lazy, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and play in the water.

No whitewater experience is necessary, but once you cast off, you’re committed to making the entire run. So, travel is self-contained and you must be prepared to deal with any problems that might arise along the way. By the time you drag yourself off the river 1-3 days later at Westwater Utah, you’ll already be planning your next trip.

If whitewater makes you wary, this is a great way to enjoy river running without suffering from adrenaline poisoning. See the BLM website for details and check with outfitters in Grand Junction or Fruita for help planning your adventure and getting set up with equipment and shuttles.

The clear green waters and perfect white beaches of this popular vacation area, just west of the Florida-Alabama border, make it a vacation destination and a weekend getaway spot for all of southern Alabama. Only recently has the rest of the country begun to feel the tug of its attraction.

No matter what you fancy in a beach vacation, you’ll find it here. Surrounded by water, anglers get the best of all worlds – bay, surf, lake and deep sea fishing . The climate is mild enough to permit golfing year round and some of the course, like Kiva Dunes, roll right up to the beach.

There are historical attractions, like Fort Morgan and plenty of places, to immerse yourself in and learn about the tidal ecosystem, including the amazing nesting sea turtles. And, of course, there are the awesome beaches.

To get the most from your visit, stay at a Gulf Shores condo resort complex. Look for one that offers full resort amenities, is close to what you like to do and offers enough fun activities to keep the kids busy while you lounge.

I was born on the Oregon Coast, and as a family we try to visit at least every two years. I don’t have any family left there, but I still get a thrill when we drive the last few miles into Lincoln City and catch our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. Although my family moved away when I was just 6 months old, every return feels like a homecoming of sorts. Of course, there are a few things we must do every visit – I would be heartbroken if we skipped them, and oh yeah, the kids would too!

Mo’s Restaurant is a MUST. I hate fish, never have liked it – but when we’re on vacation in Oregon, I eat it like crazy. Mo’s has the BEST clam chowder – and I don’t like clam chowder – at all! Yes there are a lot of tourists, and you usually have to wait in line, but I’ve never said “Ugh, I’m sick of this” and we eat there almost daily the 2 weeks we’re on the coast. Mo’s has locations in Florence, Otter Rock, Newport (2 locations), Lincoln City and Cannon Beach. You can also order their chowder base online, which we do every New Years. They ship it in dry ice via FedEx Overnight and it’s TOTALLY worth it!

Tillamook Cheese Factory is located in Tillamook, OR – about an hour’s drive north of Lincoln City. Beyond the beautiful scenery in every direction, Tillamook is kind of fun. There isnt much there, but the cheese factory is a really neat experience and they have a retail store when you’re done with the tour – the Ice Cream is TO DIE FOR!

Newport Aquarium is located South of Lincoln City – about a 1/2 hr drive – and was formerly the home of Keiko – the whale featured in the Free Willy movies. Keiko’s aquarium was renovated into a series of walk-through aquariums that feature awesome sharks and other amazing types of ocean life. There are also sea otter and marine bird exhibits – and you can spend a good 1/2 to 3/4 of a day here just wandering and taking photos.

Southern Oregon Coast Vacations

The Sea Lion Caves north of Florence is a cant-miss. This natural sea cavern is home to around 200 noisy Stellar Sea Lions. While visiting you can expect to see the sea lions in their natural habitat – gigantic bulls and even the young can be seen on the rocks below. The kids love this place!

Deep Sea Fishing is a must – for those that can handle the rocking of the ocean. If you get car sick or the thought of most amusement rides turns you green, deep sea fishing is NOT for you. My husband went once, and spent 6 miserable hours at sea…I had a blast. We always book through Tradewinds Charters out of Depoe Bay (about halfway between Lincoln City and Newport) which touts itself as the smallest harbor in the world. Tradewinds runs a fleet of over 10 boats and you can usually get a reservation at some point in time during your stay. The picture at the right is of the Sunrise and I’ve been out with Captain Craig twice. He’s great and we always catch fish. I always book ahead before we even leave home, to make sure I get a spot. The nice thing about having a spouse that is a poor sailor is there is always someone to watch the kids!

Some things to remember:

The coast is NOT tropical – the highs in July and August are around 70 degrees and you’ll need to pack accordingly. We always spend a few days in Bend before we head to the coast and the climate change from the desert of central/eastern Oregon to the coast is severe. Pack jeans and sweaters – leave your bathing suit at home if you plan on swimming in the ocean – it makes your feet hurt to just walk in it.

The coast IS a tourist destination – so you’ll have to deal with traffic & people – it’s not the quiet quaint getaway that someone visiting Mendocino, CA might expect – it’s teeming with people most days and this can pose frustrations – remember – you’re on vacation and you’re NOT punching a time clock – take your time and have fun!

One of the best reasons to choose a vacation rental can be the amenities offered. Beyond having a kitchen and sometimes a washer and dryer – many resort complexes and property rental companies offer great perks to their guests that don’t cost a dime.

Destin Days Vacation Rentals offers a wide variety of free Destin Florida rental amenities. This is the best and most inexpensive way to see all that the Gulf Coast of Florida has to offer.

All in all – a vacation to Destin, FL and a vacation rental from Destin Days is the way to go if you want guaranteed enjoyment on the Gulf Coast.

Colorado is a premier whitewater rafting destination. The tumbling waters of the Arkansas, Poudre, San Juan, Eagle, Blue, Crystal, Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers are all stuff campfire stories are made of. But it’s not all whitewater.

There are many stretches of riffling river throughout the state to enjoy, as well. Day trips, overnights and multi-day runs ideal for ordinary river rats who want to pilot their own craft and immerse themselves in the great outdoors for relaxation instead of an adreline rush.

Nothing beats drifting through sky-high canyons with a cold drink, an old dog and a good friend. My favorite trip is one close to home. A 2-3 hour float I can take on a moment’s notice and shoehorn in between work and sundown on hot summer afternoons.

Grizzly to Two Rivers, aka Grizz, is the town run for Glenwood Springs – a 6 mile section of the Colorado River that winds through lower Glenwood Canyon. The put in is at the Grizzly Creek Recreation Area and the take out at Two Rivers Park. Both ends offer water, restrooms, parking and launches.

The river can be pretty scary for water wimps during the run-off, but if you don’t mind getting splashed, the icy wave trains are a thrill. By mid-June, it’s mostly riffles that can be negotiated in a PFD and an inner tube. Beaches and swimming holes abound and natural hot springs seep into the river as you approach Glenwood Springs.

Grizzly draws everyone with something that floats on scorching summer weekends, it’s heavily used by the many commercial rafting companies from Aspen to Vail, and it’s sandwiched between a busy Interstate highway and a railroad track. But don’t let any of that deter you. As soon as you hit the water, your attitude will ease, your stress will soften and you’ll feel like one of the lucky ones. Raft on!

This Laurentian Mountain resort is one of those rare places where all four seasons allow visitors to realize their vacation dreams. In the winter, it offers not just alpine skiing, but ice skating, sledding, ski touring, snowshowing and comaraderie around blazing bonfires – all in the fairytale setting of a winter wonderland.

While the other three seasons can surprise you with just about any kind of weather, you will not be at a loss for things to do. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing and golf are some of the most popular activities in the Spring and Fall.

Summertime brings out the swimmers, windsurfers and boaters, as well as those seeking to enjoy a huge variety of wildflowers, birds, butterflies and mushrooms.

Canada may seem like a world away, but Mont Tremblant can be reached by direct flights from several major US cities and the area is just a 1-2 hour drive from Quebec and Montreal.

Where to stay:
Options are endless, if you’re interested in a vacation rental on Anna Maria Island you should try out Island Real Estate, the choices and selection are unmatched. If you’re an on the beach and pampered kind of traveler, a bed and breakfast might be just your speed.

Dining choices abound, as a local where their favorite place is, you’ll get a variety of answers, but you’ll always enjoy yourself. Because Tampa and Sarasota are so close, you can cruise across the bridge and visit Busch Gardens or the Florida Aquarium.

Overall a trip to Anna Maria Island is a way to escape the everyday and relax in the sedate island pace.

#1 Amenity – Beach Access and Pool

When you are in Miami you are there for a reason. Chances are you are there to have fun on the beach. Many hotels in Miami have beach access right at the hotel. While some don’t, chances are there is a beach not far, usually within walking distance from the hotel. When it comes to beach access, determine how much time you will be spending on the beach, and how long you want to travel to get to one. Another consideration is cost. Hotels that have private beach access tend to be more expensive than hotels that don’t.

When choosing a Miami Beach hotel, consider whether or not you would like the hotel to have a pool, and make sure that the pool is open. Hotels do go through renovations and sometimes they don’t list whether the pool is open while you are there. It can ruin a vacation if the kids want to go to the pool and you find out it is closed due to renovation while you are there. A hotel may list that they have a poll on their website, but it is still a good ides to give the hotel a call to make sure the pool will be open while you are there.

#2 Amenity – Onsite Dining

While it is nice to experience dining outside your hotel, sometimes vacationing can make you tired and you may not want to leave your hotel. When choosing a hotel, check to see what kind of dining options the hotel offers. Some hotels offer only 1 or 2 choices for dining, while others offer an assortment of options. Many of the hotels offer fine dining in the evening so it might be good to check on what type of attire is suitable for this type of restaurant.

#3 Amenity – Spa and/or Health Club

Many Hotels today offer an onsite spa or fitness center. If you are looking to pamper yourself while you are on vacation, check into these choices. While some hotels offer onsite spas and fitness centers, others offer affiliate programs. These programs offer discounts to nearby spas or fitness centers. A lot of times when a spa is offsite the hotel will provide transportation. It is still a good idea to check with the hotel to see what they do and do not offer in regards to a spa and health club. Many hotels also offer spa packages or specials that are included in the packages, so check into this and save some money by booking it all together.

#4 Amenity – Children’s Activities

Miami Beach is a great family destination. When choosing a hotel, make sure it offers something for everyone. Many hotels offer things for children, such as a kiddy pool and playground equipment. Others offer activities for older children such as table games and arcades right in the hotel. Check these out before you go to make sure the whole family is happy.

#5 Amenity – Onsite Entertainment

Many hotels offer entertainment right at the hotel. This can be a major consideration when booking a room. While many people enjoy the onsite entertainment some people don’t. Check to see what kind of entertainment the hotel offers, and what time it ends. If events end later than you would like, and you still like the hotel, request a room away from the area where the entertainment or event is being held. If onsite entertainment is your thing, it is a good idea to talk with the hotel’s concierge to get a list of events going on at the hotel.

Mexico
Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations. It is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Los Cabos features luxury hotels, championship golf courses and some of the best sport fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking and much more.

The Caribbean
The Cayman Islands offer many things for many people. 99% of the travelers visit Grand Cayman Island. It is easy to see why people go here. Of the islands this island offers the most when it comes to resorts and hotels. The fabulous snorkeling and scuba diving is not to be missed. When diving, you will think you are in a pet shop aquarium. The fish are abundant and the stingrays are gentle and fun to watch. If time permits, rent a Jeep and cruise around the Island.

Hawaii
Hawaii offers many choices for the traveling family. Each island is unique and offers something for everyone. Kauai is less touristy but still offers much to do. The surfing and snorkeling are not to be missed. Be sure to take a day and drive up to Waimea Canyon. This canyon offers many photo opportunities, and spots to get out and hike near beautiful waterfalls. Maui offers white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Maui also offers great sightseeing and wonderful shopping. Of the islands, Hawaii, also known as “The Big Island” is the largest. Here you can visit the only active volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. You will also find wonderful resorts, pristine beaches, great nightlife, fine dining and shopping.

South Carolina

Hilton Head Island offers a great beach vacation location – with plenty to do for romantic couples or families. There are a ton of activities and attractions in and around Hilton Head Island that will give both the young and the young at heart plenty to fill their days. Summer mid-day temperatures hover around 85-90 degrees – warm but perfect for beachcombing and swimming or kayaking in the surf or on the sound. Water temperatures average in the 80s from June through September so summer is a perfect time to visit.

Many resorts offer a plethora of activities for you and your family. While you are skiing fresh powder, your children can be supervised by a certified ski instructor while enrolled in ski school. After that lesson, you can meet up with them and they will be happy to show you what they learned. When the day ends, be sure to explore the town. Ski towns are notorious for some of the best shopping and fine dining. If you want to take a day off from skiing to catch your breath, try ice skating, toboggan runs or just sit by a fire with a good book. When it comes time to plan a ski vacation, try to plan at least 5 to 6 months ahead of time. This is when you can find the best deals and you shouldn’t have to worry about the hotel you want to stay in, completely booked. I have found that a little research goes a long way. After you choose your hotel, see if they have any packages or specials available. Most of the time hotels and resorts will offer a bit of a discount on lift tickets and other activities. If a special or package is not available, make sure to buy your lift tickets in bulk to save some money. Try to buy a 3 or 4 day pass versus buying individual tickets each day. Often times, these lift tickets will be good for more than 1 resort in the area.

Plan ahead. Accommodations can be sold out or unavailable by early summer. The Travel Industry Association of America, who conducted an online survey of 1,519 U.S. adults aged 18 and over in January 2006, reports that 21 percent of Americans who are planning to travel this summer had already arranged lodging at their destination. The rest were either exploring their options for where to stay (28 percent) or had not yet selected the specific destination for their trip (32 percent). The age of the internet makes research and booking easy and fairly painless. Chamber of Commerce websites make finding destination activities and outings simple. Getting the whole family excited about your trip can be as easy as spending 20 minutes around the computer looking at websites that bring the destination right into your home.

Select appropriate lodging. A family of 5 can spend less on one Breckenridge condo than on two adjoining rooms at some nearby hotels, with more family-friendly space and a kitchen that alleviates the need to dine out for every meal. The amount you save on lodging will make a difference in what area attractions and activities you can visit! If you’re slow to get moving in the morning, you can have a leisurely breakfast in your condo. You’re on vacation and it’s not necessary to be on the go all day long.

Look beyond the “usual suspects”. Destinations where summer may be the off-season can offer lots of family fun and unique summer vacation experiences. Ski resorts offer fabulous lodging deals and a lot of family activities to draw summer travelers. Top destination resorts such as Vail Colorado or Park City Utah offer great packages and bargain rates in the summer.

Be as specific as possible. Searching on the Internet for specific requirements that you have will provide much more fruitful and productive results. The more specific the search, the more targeted the results. For instance, a search for “Lake Tahoe Family Vacation” will provide much more relevant results than a search for California vacation. If you’re not finding what you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to look to the big sites. One way to help ensure a great vacation is to read destination and rental reviews at one of the review sites such as Tripadvisor or Openlist.

Don’t succumb to teen angst. Nothing can ruin an outing of family togetherness quicker than a teen determined to whine and mope throughout the trip. Engaging in a new activity or destination can morph a perpetually bored teen to an active and willing participant. Charter a yacht in the San Juan Islands to give them an up-close view of whales and sea lions or plan a Central Oregon adventure trip alive with rafting, mountain biking, canoeing and horseback riding.
