10 Must do/Must Haves for Pet Friendly Travel

Create a customized ID tag that includes your pet’s name, home address, & phone number. Create a second tag with the address of where you are staying while on vacation.
Make sure your pet us up to date on all vaccinations prior to travel.
Get your pet used to the travel carrier you plan to use. Take several trips to get Buster good and ready for your trip.
Do you have the perfect create or animal carrier? If not, consider an innovative collapsible travel crate.
Bring a cozy bed or travel blanket for good rest.
Pet Friendly Car Travel – make sure your animal’s space in the car is well ventilated and calming.
Bring your leash – 2 to be safe! Gulf County law requires that pets must leashed at all times while on the beach.

Consider bringing your own water from home so as not to upset your pet’s stomach while you’re gone.

More Than Just A Vacation

A top of the line Disney vacations may not be in the cards for most families in these tough economic times. Don’t cancel your summer plans yet! There are many free and inexpensive attractions in and around Orlando, Florida that will satisfy everyone in your family and have them begging to return year after year. Take a trip down memory lane at Old Town. This fun carnival-like attraction will take you back in time with old time cruise nights featuring cars from 1974 and older. Rock out to live bands and sing along with the oldies.
There’s also a variety of fun shops, carnival rides and dining areas for the whole family to enjoy.

Bringing on the Green

St. Lucie County, Florida is embarking on a green initiative to facilitate the nation’s first sustainable community’s demonstration project. Although the details are a bit over my head, I was struck by the idea that a partnership was being made to move towards a greener economy. Included in the plan is a 65,000 square foot alternative energy center that will be incorporated as a real-world classroom with hands-on experiences for students at a local state college. Discussions are also under way to bring in from around the world leading scientists to the classrooms and energy center thus broadening the idea of sharing and partnering for a greener community.

The highly competitive grant was the only one awarded in the state of Florida. Community leaders and program partners have toured St. Lucie County and the Fort Pierce area looking for public, educational, manufacturing and industrial facilities in addition to commercial structures to be included in what they have termed the “Green Mile District.”

The idea of having a ‘green mile’ struck me as ironic knowing how popular a different ‘green’ is in the area. Port St. Lucie, Florida has some great greens in the form of PGA golf clubs!

For instance, you can basically have a PGA golf course in your back yard at your ‘home away from home’ at one of Florida’s golf resorts. Green abounds at these beautiful links that include courses designed by the famed Tom Fazio and Pete Dye.

Visitors wanting to save some ‘green’ can do so by checking out the golf specials and packages in Port St. Lucie.

Make the plan to save some green, hit that perfect shot to the green and visit a green community with a HUGE alternative energy center all in the same area. Your friends will be green with envy at the stories you come back telling of all your green experiences. Heck, I’m turning a little green myself.

Florida’s Gulf Coast Still Beautiful

It has been over 100 days since the oil drilling platform explosion in the Gulf of Mexico and despite what you may have heard, Florida beaches are still open! Additionally, as of 8/10/10, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reopened 5, 144 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico for finfish fishing. Flights over the area in the last 30 days and NOAA data show no oil in the area reopened for fishing. Although crab and shrimp fishing remains closed, visitors and commercial fisherman can catch renowned grouper, snapper, tuna and mahi mahi.

The eastern edge this recent closure affected Cape San Blas on Florida Panhandle’s Forgotten Coast. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection(DEP) confirmed reports of tar balls near Pensacola, FL, however local Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency are monitoring the air and water quality closely in Cape San Blas, and so far the beaches remain beautiful and open. According to a statement by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman, Rodney Barreto, “Both the water and fish have been thoroughly tested and Florida’s seafood is certified good to eat and great tasting.”

Still hesitant about booking a Florida vacation?

One of the most exciting fishing stories you can bring home from your Florida vacation, is about the one that didn’t get away. Point Your Beach Vacation South to Perdido Key Florida

Growing up in the Southeast part of the U.S. my parents would take us to the Northwest part of Florida mainly the Destin and Pensacola area where the beaches are pure white and the water an emerald green. I believe things have progressed since the 70’s and 80’s when we visited there in terms of population growth and hotel construction but the beaches have remained the same; pristine and white. Perdido Key Florida is located just a stone’s throw from the Alabama state line and sits just west of Pensacola.

Water Recreation

As with most beach destinations, Perdido Key sits on the Gulf of Mexico therefore boogie boarding, surfing, surf-fishing and snorkeling are all apart of the daily beach activities. What stood out to me was the idea of going on a dolphin cruise which are available in the area. A pontoon boat with large viewing windows and a low deck surround the boat for close viewing of dolphins and other marine life that reside in and out of the Orange Beach/Perdido Bay area. Charter fishing is abundant in this part of the Gulf and you can catch snapper, grouper, cobia, mackeral, tuna, wahoo and marlin season to season all about 15-20 miles out in the deep sea.

Dining

When at the beach (any beach that is in my opinion) one must temp the tastebuds with local seafood and coastal delights. Blue crab claws, calamari, oysters on the half shell, boiled shrimp and smoked tuna dip just to name a few can be found at the local Perdido Key seafood restaurant. I don’t know about you but hanging out on the beach and in the ocean all day makes me very hungry! With Pensacola just down the street more options in dining, night-life and attractions are available just in case you exhaust all of Perdido Key’s resources.

Lodging

The Northwest Florida coast is full of oceanfront hotels all ranging from 3 to 5 stars in a quality rating. Other options exist of course. Why not check out renting a Perdido Key vacation condo or townhouse where you have the place all to yourself and pretty much for the same rates if not cheaper than renting a hotel room.

Disney World Orlando ~ It’s all about the kids (both young and old)

My son is still too young (under a year) to go to Disney World in Orlando but I’m sure it will be on the list of places to go once he is old enough. I have only been once and that was in high school on a spring break trip to the Orlando – Daytona area. Walt Disney has always seemed to shine very bright through generations past and onward into the future.

One must check out the Blue Man Group and attend a show to experience the vivid colors and wild imagination of the three blue guys that put together an awesome performance. These guys have a GRAMMY nomination they are so talented. They go all over the world to perform their wild and lavish acts. The show is recommended for kids age 3 and up so the whole family can enjoy a night out seeing the Blue Man Group.

The Magic Kingdom at Disney World was my favorite amusement park to visit some 20 years ago. The Mad Tea Party and Space Mountain are some of the older rides at Magic Kingdom whereas now, kids have Pirates of the Caribbean and Monsters Inc. rides and attractions. One can find lodging inside and outside the park so there are plenty of options. If one prefers renting a vacation home over staying in a hotel room that can easily be arranged. Orlando vacation home specials are available all throughout the year since Orlando is year-round destination.

Seaworld is a must see also while in Orlando. I have personally been to the one out in San Diego and had a great time so I can imagine the venue in Orlando is pretty awesome just because of all of the surrounding attractions. Nearby Orlando is Daytona Beach which is home to the famous Daytona 500 NASCAR race and is a very popular vacation destination. Where else can one drive their car on the beach and enjoy 23 miles of sandy beach to play on.

One attraction that seems to be worth checking out is called “Medieval Times” which is a dinner attraction and tournament. There are nine castles that have been made to show 11th Century performances with knights jousting on horseback while the audience sits down to a 4 course dinner. The castles are spread throughout the entire U.S. and Canada. The castle near Orlando is the Kissimmee Castle that even has a medieval village with 8 cottages. So, if you want to see some knights jousting on horses and not have to go back in time then this is the place!

Orlando is much more than Disney World as one can see and all of the attractions are specifically designed to attract all ages so nobody is left out. So, after your kids are done with Disney there is much more to do and experience in Orlando. Plan a trip anytime!

Destin, Florida ~ World-Class Fishing and Vacation Spot

Growing up in Georgia the closest beach for our family was Destin, Florida by choice. We could have gone to Panama City or even St. Simon on the Georgia coast but my mom and dad took us to Destin first and we went back again and again. Now that I’m older and love to fish I would jump at the chance to get back down to the Gulf and enjoy a fishing vacation.

Destin has a annual fishing rodeo that is held every October and lasts all month and anyone can participate. The Gulf waters off of Destin produce some of the best fishing around. From Marlin and Sailfish to Snapper and Grouper to Hammerhead Shark, the Gulf is alive with sport fish. There are many charter boats that you can find to go fish for the 1/2 day, full day, and even night.

Where there is great fishing there is great eating! They go hand in hand in most cases and Destin sure has it covered. When there is a plethora of seafood to be harvested and eaten you can find great local restaurants that incorporate seafood in just about every thing that you can sink your mouth into. Tuna, crab, calamari, shrimp, oysters, mahi-mahi, grouper and amberjack all can be served to you fresh daily. Fine dining can also be experienced during your stay in Destin. Other restauranteurs have blended other styles like Louisiana Cajun into their seafood delectable dishes.

Destin has definitely grown since the late 70’s and 80’s since I have been there. The lodging options are immense and range all over the board for what you expect for your Desitn vacation. You can choose to rent a luxury vacation home for privacy and space or opt for one of the many hotels that spread up and down the beach. From condos and townhomes to homes you can find a vacation rental on the beach or just steps away.

Vacationing to Florida includes a lot of happening cities and attractions like Miami and Disney World so do not forget about the other side of the panhandle where Destin resides and beautiful beaches and great fishing abound.

The Forgotten Coast is For Seafood Lovers

Are you tired of the crowds and high rise developments along the beach? Do you long for a quiet stretch of white sand where you can relax in solitude? Then, travel to The Forgotten Coast of Florida for the beach vacation of your dreams.

The Forgotten Coast is the area in the crook of the Florida panhandle (also know as the Big Bend) that spans the pristine coastline from St Marks Lighthouse on the east to Mexico Beach on the west. Along the way are Port St Joe, Cape San Blas, Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Eastpoint, St George Island, Lanark Village and other obscure small towns and barrier islands.

This region is famous (but not too famous!) for its fresh seafood. The Annual Florida Seafood Festival is held in Apalachicola at the beginning of each November. Other yearly feasts include the Apalachicola Downtown Oyster Roast, the Oyster Spat Festival on St George Island, a Low Country Shrimp Boil near Simmons Bayou, the Stone Crab Festival in St Marks and the Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival in Panacea. In addition, nearly every local festival offers plenty of fresh seafood options to attendees.

These downhome celebrations are absolutely the best way to enjoy the local harvest from the sea. Along with regional favorites, you’ll get to try recipes rarely found in restaurants and talk to the people who catch and prepare fish and shellfish as part of their daily routine.

Flounder, grouper, mackerel and snapper and many other delicious species are abundant in the brackish estuaries, the protected waters of Apalachicola Bay and the expansive Gulf of Mexico. Booking a day on a local charter fishing boat makes it easy to catch your own “mess of fish” for dinner.

So, if just plain relaxing and dining on prime seafood top your list of things to do on a Florida beach vacation, take off your shoes, put on your bib and go directly to the Forgotten Coast.

Naples & Marco Island Golf Vacations

I’m not a huge golfer, I haven’t ever understood the lure of chasing that little white ball around the lawn – but there are those in my family that are addicts. Every time we talk vacation we have to talk golf courses. I don’t really whine much about it because I know that’s prime beach and shopping time for me.

We were researching a vacation to Florida last year – and I wrote some on shelling in the Marco Island areaand ran across the information on golf on the Paradise Coast. For those of you who dont know, the Paradise coast encompasses Naples, Marco Island and part of the Everglades along the southwestern coast.

The golf information wasnt hard to find. I found a good site called “Marco Island Golf” that outlined all of the courses on Marco Island and in nearby Naples, FL. This little stretch of coast is home to no less than SEVENTEEN public and private courses:

Fishing in Key West: “Catch and Let’s Feast”

Fishing in the Keys incorporates just about every type and style of fishing ever imagined. From deep-sea fishing with heavy tackle to fly and light tackle fishing and even spear-fishing on the reef, the Keys offer excitement to every angler. The fish that are usually caught are tarpon, bonefish, barracuda, shark, dolphin, sailfish, marlin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna just to name a few.

One can book a charter trip for a half day, full day, 10 hours worth and even a night fishing adventure.

From early March until late July one can catch tarpon day and/or night. Locally known as “Silver Kings”, tarpon arrive in the Key West area in the early summer to spawn. One of the most exciting ways to catch tarpon is on a flat boat with a fly rod in the clear, blue salt flats. This kind of fishing is called “sight fishing” and the angler must be able to cast accurately in order to attract the fish. The salt flats are very shallow (one to two feet deep) so you can imagine the exhilaration when there is a “fish on”.

From Key West or “The Conch Republic” deep-sea or off-shore fishing takes the angler out far where one is most likely to catch larger fish but not necessarily. Backcountry fishing takes place along the edges of the flats where the water is slightly warmer and therefore home to big tarpon as well as shark and barracuda. Guides will typically also offer reef and wreck fishingwhich produces amberjack, cobia, snapper, grouper and large shark. Guides will advise you to “catch and release” but you can keep your catch if you want to have it prepared by a local restaurant and serve it up to your friends and family.

The greatest reward for an angler is to have his or her catch be served up on a platter at the local restaurant. Other than being the southernmost point of the United States, Key West, Florida has many other labels attached to its’ name. Many know that Earnest Hemingway called Key West home for a number of years during the 1930’s and also wrote several novels. Prior inhabitants of Key West were several Indian tribes and of course the founder, Ponce De Leon of Spain way back in 1513.

Key West is home to the Regatta Key West, Conch Republic Days, Lobster mini-season and the Poker Run just to name a few. Everything mentioned after Regatta Key West probably raises some eyebrows as well as mine. The Conch Republic Days are in April and the locals have a conch shell blowing contest, a bed race down Duval Street and a reenactment of the battle for independence of the Conch Republic. The lobster mini-season is only two days and it takes place in July. It’s where local divers get to take the lobster bounty for themselves. Lodging is at full capacity during this time. The Poker Run is charitable event where thousands upon thousands of motorcyclists ride from the mainland to Key West and pick up poker cards along the way at five designated points. Whoever has the best hand at the end of the ride wins a new bike or $5,000. This event brings a lot of support to the town and to the charities.

Along with the history and southern coastal charm of Key West come great and quaint places to stay. There are historic inns from the 19^th century that have been made available for the visiting guest(s). Most of the lodging is in “Old Town” and is walking distance to everything. The island architecture of Key West’s homes makes for a warm and relaxing stay – perfect for the romantic couple and also great for the single visitor that just wants to get away.

With being right on the water, activities include boating, fishing, diving, snorkeling and sunning. Reefs are close by and just a short boat ride away to start your dive or snorkel trip. Orlando, FL: The Culture behind the “Goofiness”

Is there some seriousness lurking behind the facade of Disney World? One should ask such a question with all of the animated amusement that is running around Orlando. There are other things to do and experience in “Mickey land” other than eat cotton candy and ride the “magic carpet”.

Museums of art, science and history centers, film festivals, operas and ballets all do exist in Orlando for people to mentally digest on their visit. A popular event is the Florida Film Festival which is held in March every year and attracts more than 25,000 guests along with producers and directors of independent films. Another festival to note is the Global Peace Film Festival held every September in Orlando and its’ purpose is to educate the world of peace through art and film. Orlando is full of art galleries with many showcasing local artists and traveling exhibits.

There are other forms of outdoor recreation in Orlando besides walking around. Hang gliding, balloon rides, airplane rides, scuba diving and snorkeling with manatees and airboat tours are just some of the fun things you can do outside the park. Forever Florida is a safari eco-tour that allows the visitor to see Florida’s wildlife up close and that includes black bear, alligator, hog, bobcat, coyote and possibly even the elusive Florida black panther.

Swimming with the manatees, scuba diving lessons and snorkeling are offered in small groups to keep the student/teacher ratio down for quality instruction. Biking and hiking trails are always close by when you are in Orlando but if you like the kind of bike with no pedals then there’s Orlando Harley-Davidson where one can rent a Harley for however long one wants. Horse back riding is also available through several stables offering rides through Florida’s natural landscape.

So there is something for everyone in Orlando and it doesn’t always spell MICKEY MOUSE. Check out Orlando in sunny central Florida any time of the year.

Orlando, Florida is centrally located in Florida and is home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens and SeaWorld just to start. Cape Canaveral which is the home of the Space Shuttle is not too far away on Florida’s space coast. Surrounding areas such as Winter Haven and Kissimmee are home to winter training camps for many major league baseball teams. So in essence there is something for everyone to do young and old alike.

When visiting the Orlando area one can find all kinds of lodging including condos, town homes, vacation homes and hotels. Annual Events in Orlando

Orlando, Florida isn’t just about The Mouse or The Movies. It’s not all about kid’s, either. The Orlando area boasts a host of eclectic annual events that are not to be missed. Here are a few favorites to consider:

Near the end of January (January 20-25 in 2009) party in the streets of Eaton (20 miles north of downtown Orlando) at the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities for a week long celebration of African American artistry and culture.

Shelling near Marco Island Florida

One of my family’s favorite beach-type pass times is shelling. We hit the beach and drag great gobs of different shells back to the vacation rental – only to be forced to leave 90% behind because we cant pack them all – or they smell funny.

I did find out you can clean seashells so they don’t smell – but picking up “dead shells” is your best bet for this, although that doesn’t guarantee they’ll be ’stink free’.

Depending upon what part of the states you visit, some of the shells you find are pretty dull. The Oregon coast for example delivers a vast number of mussles – which are pretty neat with their iridescent colors – but after you’ve seen a hundred of those, big deal!

So where else can you go to spend hours picking through shells on the beach. I actually did a search for best shelling beaches in Florida and found out the “Lee Island Coast” in Southwest Florida was actually one of the best places in the WORLD for shelling. Featuring nearly 100 barrier islands, some of the more familiar names would be Sanibel Island, Marco Island and Captiva Island.

Plan your shelling for low tide, so check out the tide tables before you leave on vacation – that way you’ll know the best time of day to hit the beach with your pail. You can also have better luck by checking out the “lay of the land” so to speak. One good spot is where the waves break over as they come up on the beach, it will look like a slight “ditch” just past the water line.
Be forewarned, live shelling is banned – this means if there’s a critter, or a portion of a critter inside, leave it alone!

You can actually “charter” a guide to take you shelling after kayaking to a barrier island. Or visit a “shell museum” – that’s some hard core shelling action!

There are over 400 species of shells that can be found int he area – from the common scallop to something called the brown speckled junonia – but when I search for that type of shell – all I get are images of butterflies – so that one must be pretty rare. You can also expect to find conch and sand dollars in abundance.

When you consider hitting the Lee Island Coast – I always recommend vacation rentals for your stay. I found a few that are right on the gulf beach and offer great convenience to shelling. Consider a Marco Island Condo Rental at South Seas on the Beach. Captiva Island Vacation Rentals also has some nice places on the sand.

Destin Cruises for Everyone

I rarely make a trip that’s anywhere near the water without taking a boat ride of some sort. There’s no substitute for cruising on a paddle wheeler across Lake Tahoe, paddling a sea kayak in Baja or casting over the rail on fishing party boat at the Jersey Shore.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll love Destin, Florida, where you can enjoy boating of all kinds. In fact, in Destin you could go from one unique boat trip to another from dawn until dusk.

Get up with the sun for awesome deep sea Gulf Coast fishing aboard one of the many charters available. Then, try a Dolphin Cruise out into the Choctawhatchee Bay on the Southern Star, an 80 foot long glass bottomed boat. This one’s a don’t miss if you have kids – they’ll even get to steer!

From there, move along to an afternoon of playing pirates while sailing aboard the Nathaniel Bowditch, a 54 foot schooner, with stops for snorkeling and sea-shelling along the way.

Then, dress up for a romantic dinner of lobster manicotti or scrumptious tenderloin and dancing to live music aboard the Solaris, which is berthed at the Baytowne Marina. Sunset cruises depart daily and reservations are suggested.

Orlando Florida Vacation

When Walt Disney decided to build a theme park on swamp land in central Florida, he was probably the only one who had a clear vision of what the future would bring. What started out as a theme park plunked down in the middle of nowhere just a generation ago has now grown into one of the most visited and most celebrated family resorts in the world. And it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon!

Yes, it can be crowded. So if that’s a problem for you, be careful to choose a time to visit when most kids are in school. However, there’s not really an off-season in Orlando anymore. It has become a 4 season destination.

Don’t be too ambitious with your agenda. Plan ahead to make certain you get all your own personal must-dos on your schedule, but remember that not everyone will have the same list. I estimate that you’ll need a full week just to ride all the rides in the theme parks.

Add a day for Sea World, another for a side trip to the beach and a day for shopping, theme dining and a round of full-sized or miniature golf. Then, you still won’t have seen the Everglades (just a short drive to the south) or the Kennedy Space Center or the home of the Miami Dolphins. And you won’t have taken a glass-bottomed boat ride, frolicked in the numerous Orlando water parks or fed the gators.

With so much to do in Orlando, it’s no surprise that it has become a popular place for second homes. Multiple generations can enjoy the area together and apart in every season of the year. The best news about this is the abundance of Kissimee and Orlando vacation homes that are available as rentals.

You truly get all the comforts of home – and then some. Many rentals have their own pools. Nearly all provide access to one, along with activity centers, tennis courts and other recreational facilities. In addition, you get much more space for everyone to spread out and enjoy themselves, often with a deck or a yard. You can prepare your own meals when you wish and you have the facilities to entertain, as well.

It’s no wonder second homes in Orlando have become so popular. You can’t see and enjoy it all in one vacation trip to Florida.

Florida Mountain biking – it sounds like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? How can you mountain bike in a state who’s highest point is only 345 feet above sea level? While it’s true you won’t find any grueling steeps on which to punish your quads, a mountain bike is your best choice for negotiating the sand and swamps of our southernmost state.

If you find yourself in the Tampa St Petersburg area, check out SWAMP (the SouthWest Association of Mountainbike Peddlars) . Hook up with these native riding enthusiasts to see how it’s done in the Sunshine State. They’re an active group with plenty of friendly social events and welcome newcomers to join them. Florida Travel – Manatees, Turtles & More!

So I’ve never been to Florida but I think the ONE thing I want to see when I go is a Manatee. It just amazes me how huge and graceful they are. The video below is taken by one of the keepers at the Parker Manatee Aquarium in Bradenton, FL. Bradenton is located just across the bay from Anna Maria Island which I’ve heard offers great beaches and a nice retreat when compared to the more lively large cities of Bradenton and Sarasota.

This video is from a loggerhead turtle hatch that was on the gulf coast of florida somewhere. Anna Maria Island is home to the Anna Maria Turtle Watch. Every spring and summer volunteers walk the beaches at sunrise to report nesting and hatching activity. Imagine seeing these little babies crawling to the sea every morning!

Sunny Isles Beach Florida

Sunny Isles Beach ranks as one of the best vacation destinations in the entire South Florida area. It’s far enough from the hustle and bustle of Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale to be a relaxing family resort. At the same time, it’s close enough (about 30 minutes) to those hot spots that you can enjoy the shopping, partying, people watching and nightlife for which they are famous.

With water, water everywhere, the resort community occupies a strip of land bounded on one side by 2 1/2 miles of white sand beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. The IntraCoastal Waterway runs along the other side and, if you venture a bit east onto the mainland, you’ll find Oleta River State Recreation area for sea kayaking and mantee watching.

For some reason unknown to me, fishing is not allowed on the beaches on either side of the island, so there’s only one place to fish in Sunny Isles – the historic Newport Pier. Luckily, it sticks waaaay out into the Atlantic where the snapper, jack and blues abound.

Destin began as a fishing camp, grew up as a commercial fishing center and and now provides some some of the best sport fishing opportunities in the world. The reason is mostly it’s location.

A boat can leave Destin Harbor and be in 60 foot deep water within just a few miles. Within 10 miles, it can be dropping lines in 100 feet of water. And because fishing has always been the lifeblood of the area, the locals have jealously guarded their marine environment and expanded reefs that attract fish to their shelter.

Today, Destin Harbor is home to the largest and best-equipped deep sea fishing fleet in Florida. If you visit Destin, be certain to set aside at least one day to take a charter fishing trip. The captains and crews really know their stuff and will take you where the big fish swim to try your own luck.

The Emerald Coast

Aaaaaaaah…the Emerald Coast. Sounds exotic, doesn’t it? And expensive? And far away? Well, it’s none of those things.

The Emerald Coast is the section of northwestern Florida and southern Alabama that extends along the Gulf of Mexico – an area of silky white sand beaches that runs roughly from Mobile to Apalachicola.

How did it get it’s name? If you ask a local, they’ll likely tell you it’s due to the clear, emerald-green waters they enjoy. My bet is a crafty marketer needed something to call it other than the Redneck Riviera, as it’s also known.

The area is a driving destination for vacationers from all over the southeast and offers something for everyone. However, it’s important that you do a little research before you pack, as different areas of the coast have very different personalities.

Panama City Beach
Panama City Beach is one of the most affordable and best known vacation resorts along the Emerald Coast and offers a wide variety of accommodations, from cozy cottages to high rise luxury condos. Be certain to get knowledgeable, professional help in choosing the vacation rental type and location that’s right for you to insure either a quiet family vacation or a more exciting spring break experience. The Conch Republic

When I visited Key West, Florida, I was puzzled by their reference to themselves as The Conch Republic. So, I did a little research and thought I’d pass the amusing story behind this designation along.

In order to try to stem the flow of illegal aliens through the Keys to the mainland, the US Border Patrol set up a blockade of the Keys in 1982. This angered the free thinking populace into seceding from the Union.

Now that you have decided to vacation in Miami Beach, it is time to choose the hotel that you will reside in for your vacation. With a plethora of hotel options how does one pick the perfect Miami Beach hotel? A good way to choose a hotel is by the amenities that the hotel has to offer. One of the biggest disappointments that I have encountered is getting to a hotel and expecting a service that the hotel does not offer. With all the travel tools that are available on the web, you can do a little research before you go to make sure you get what you want. Listed below are what I feel are the top 5 amenities that a hotel can offer to you and your family to make your accommodation choice perfect for you.

#1 Amenity – Beach Access and Pool

When you are in Miami you are there for a reason. Chances are you are there to have fun on the beach. Many hotels in Miami have beach access right at the hotel. While some don’t, chances are there is a beach not far, usually within walking distance from the hotel. When it comes to beach access, determine how much time you will be spending on the beach, and how long you want to travel to get to one. Another consideration is cost. Hotels that have private beach access tend to be more expensive than hotels that don’t.

When choosing a Miami Beach hotel, consider whether or not you would like the hotel to have a pool, and make sure that the pool is open. Hotels do go through renovations and sometimes they don’t list whether the pool is open while you are there. It can ruin a vacation if the kids want to go to the pool and you find out it is closed due to renovation while you are there. A hotel may list that they have a poll on their website, but it is still a good ides to give the hotel a call to make sure the pool will be open while you are there.

#2 Amenity – Onsite Dining

While it is nice to experience dining outside your hotel, sometimes vacationing can make you tired and you may not want to leave your hotel. When choosing a hotel, check to see what kind of dining options the hotel offers. Some hotels offer only 1 or 2 choices for dining, while others offer an assortment of options. Many of the hotels offer fine dining in the evening so it might be good to check on what type of attire is suitable for this type of restaurant.

#3 Amenity – Spa and/or Health Club

Many Hotels today offer an onsite spa or fitness center. If you are looking to pamper yourself while you are on vacation, check into these choices. While some hotels offer onsite spas and fitness centers, others offer affiliate programs. These programs offer discounts to nearby spas or fitness centers. A lot of times when a spa is offsite the hotel will provide transportation. It is still a good idea to check with the hotel to see what they do and do not offer in regards to a spa and health club. Many hotels also offer spa packages or specials that are included in the packages, so check into this and save some money by booking it all together.

#4 Amenity – Children’s Activities

Miami Beach is a great family destination. When choosing a hotel, make sure it offers something for everyone. Many hotels offer things for children, such as a kiddy pool and playground equipment. Others offer activities for older children such as table games and arcades right in the hotel. Check these out before you go to make sure the whole family is happy.

#5 Amenity – Onsite Entertainment

Many hotels offer entertainment right at the hotel. This can be a major consideration when booking a room. While many people enjoy the onsite entertainment some people don’t. Check to see what kind of entertainment the hotel offers, and what time it ends. If events end later than you would like, and you still like the hotel, request a room away from the area where the entertainment or event is being held. If onsite entertainment is your thing, it is a good idea to talk with the hotel’s concierge to get a list of events going on at the hotel.
