Murrells Inlet in South Carolina is bursting at the seams with a fascinating and sometimes chilling history. Tales of pirates (yeah, the kind with eye patches) have been passed down for hundreds of years enticing locals and visitors alike to search for their own hidden treasures. It’s said that the famed Blackbeard himself took refuge in the creeks of Murrells Inlet waiting to attack ships bound for England. Other notable pirates like Stede Bonnet and Calico Jack Rackham also terrorized their fair share of the South Carolina coast.

Beginning in the 1700s Murrells Inlet made its debut in the rice industry and had cultivated close to 47 million pounds of rice by 1850. This lucrative business made many South Carolina rice planters very wealthy including one Joseph Alston, who eventually became South Carolina’s governor. To many people’s surprise, during this time, rice planters in South Carolina became wealthier and more powerful than their tobacco and sugar plantation counterparts in the southeast. Unfortunately, the success and wealth of rice plantations came to an abrupt halt in 1863 when the Civil War intruded on the shores of Murrells Inlet. Confederate troops were secretly using the inlet as a port to send products such as cotton to England in exchange for medicine, food and other war supplies. When the Union learned of this their warships attacked the confederate blockade destroying part of the inlet and a large portion of the rice industry. Although no one could predict this at the time, between the Civil War and a series of hurricanes that followed, South Carolina’s rice industry would be completely gone by 1916.

Following the Civil War, South Carolina in general and Murrells Inlet specifically got into the commercial fishing industry and by 1914 were offering fishing excursions as a recreational opportunity for guests and locals of Murrells Inlet. The commercial fishing industry became an advantageous market for Murrells Inlet although it never became the behemoth that the rice plantations developed into. As a couple decades past on and the Great Depression assaulted the majority of the United States, Murrells Inlet had a bit of good fortune in New York millionaire, Archer Milton Huntington when he rolled into town. Huntington had plans to build an audacious compound for himself and his wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Mr. Huntington commissioned all local workers to develop his 9,000 acre estate including brick masons, carpenters, landscapers and painters. Not only did he spend millions of dollars on his homestead, he also funded a community center, medical clinic and church for the people of Murrells Inlet.

Murrells Inlet is a hidden gem of abundant history and enchanting stories for all ages to enjoy. Just 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet is an ideal family vacation destination.

Having such a well-thought out biking system allows Hilton Head Island to reduce traffic and congestion that are common in resort towns. Each pathway system has a distinct kiosk that maps out the bike path for travelers and gives descriptions on where to find beach access, rest stops, points of interest and educational information on the surrounding area.
Hilton Head Island boasts 6 miles of bike lanes, 117 miles of shared-se pathways and 108 miles of paved shared use pathways. These pathways are a great opportunity for novice riders to gain experience or for more skilled riders to explore. The pathways are not the only area in Hilton Head that welcomes bicyclists. The area’s 12 miles of hard packed beach encourages people to take a leisurely bike ride along the ocean and take in a glorious sunrise or sunset.

As spring comes to a close and we’re nipping on the heels of summer, friends and families everywhere are making plans for much deserved summer vacations that most likely include some kind of beach and water sports. One of the premier destinations in the U.S. for such activities is none other than Lake Tahoe in California. At 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, Lake Tahoe is the largest Alpine Lake in North America. With these stats, there is never a shortage of awesome water sports and beach activities to keep tourists and locals alike entertained all summer long. If you’re looking for supreme, family-friendly water activities that will have you returning year after year, look no further than Lake Tahoe. The North and South Shores of Lake Tahoe, California boast an incredible selection of beaches where guests can enjoy the fresh water and sandy shoreline. Emerald Bay Beach near the South Shore offers a convenient boat dock for unloading and loading. Also around Emerald Bay Beach are scenic hiking trails where you can explore the lush vegetation and charming wildlife of the area.

While you’re at Emerald Bay Beach don’t forget to take a tour of the historic Vikingsholm Castle. Built in 1929 and modeled after exquisite Scandinavian design, Vikingsholm Castle is a premier display of architectural genius and luxurious grounds. Camp Richardson Beach is another selection for shoreline shenanigans near South Lake Tahoe. Camp Richardson has a great playground for the little ones to take full advantage of during the day and also offers boat rentals for anyone who isn’t able to bring their own vessel for a day of waves and rays. Also on the water activities menu in Lake Tahoe is Kayak Tours. There are many experienced companies in the area who specialize in kayak tours that everyone in the family will love. Take a day trip with Emerald Bay Kayak Tours where you’re likely to spot eagles, deer, bear and other wildlife in the area as you paddle by. If you’re ready for some real adventure ask about the night tours given at Tahoe Adventure Company where you can kayak under the full moon.

Sailing is yet another family activity to partake in while visiting glorious Lake Tahoe. Whether you take a relaxing day trip with family and soak up all that nature has to offer or a romantic sail for two, both you and your guests will make lasting memories. Woodwind Sailing Cruises is one of the oldest excursion companies in the nation and offers beautiful yachts complete with glass-bottom viewing decks, comfortable seating and restroom facilities as well as exquisite handcrafted woodwork. There are other excellent charter companies in the area that are experienced in providing a one of a kind experience to all sailors be they experienced or beginners. For the adrenaline junkies in the group, look into local parasailing excursions for the ultimate in high flying adventure. Both the North and South Shores of Lake Tahoe offer a wide variety of rental companies who will make you feel exhilarated and secure for your parasailing journey. Parasailing can be a fun trip for a group of girlfriends or a family bonding experience unlike any other. If you’re looking for adventure a little closer to the ground, why not try your hand at waterskiing or wake boarding. Blazing over the Lake Tahoe waters at a speedy pace is another one of the many ways to explore the majesty that is Lake Tahoe.

From the most seasoned professionals to first timers the waters of the islands have long beckoned to be searched by curious minds and souls. Scuba diving has become a popular mainstream activity for travelers who venture to the beautiful beaches of Hawaii and her sister islands like Maui. Kihei, Maui especially has quickly become a well known surfing destination. Surfers from around the globe snag a fun Kihei condo rental and hit the waves. What many don’t know is that man has been employing the art of scuba diving since he was required to obtain food from the sea as a mean of nourishment. From the Trojan War to Da Vinci and beyond, Scuba Diving has an intricate and interesting history.

As early as 4500BC, coastal cultures like in China, Greece and many others utilized scuba diving as a way to gather food, and participate in commerce and warfare. These cultures are not the only ones who saw scuba as a convenient way to attack their enemies. In the Trojan Wars, divers would incapacitate enemy ships by cutting holes into their boats or cutting anchor ropes. Greek history tells of fishermen who would “dive” into deeper parts of the ocean by using a heavy boulder to sink into the waters. The physical dangers of diving without protection were not known at the time. Greece also notes the first instance of utilizing diving in warfare during the siege at Syracuse. Around 360BC, according to the writings of Aristotle, attempts to provide divers with a breathing mechanism were made in the form of a kettle that was filled with air and lowered down with the diver.

From 1300 through the late 1500s and mid 1600s, many creators like Leonardo Da Vinci, Guglielmo de Loreno and others perfected the idea of a diving bell and scuba suit. The credit of the first true diving bell goes to de Loreno. Of course, many advances and improvements to scuba have been made since the time of these thinkers. Now diving is safe and can be enjoyed as a leisure activity for people of all ages. While many diving spots have popped up on the map around the world, some of the most glorious waves will be caught at Kihei, Maui.

If you generally think of Colorado as a ski vacation Mecca, let me introduce you to the “off-season”. Summers in Colorado are known for whitewater rafting, camping, hiking, golfing, mountain biking, fly-fishing, festivals, horseback riding and more! And Keystone’s central Colorado location excels in all of these Rocky Mountain summer activities.

Flyfishing – AugustKids029 Whether you are a beginning or experienced fly-fisherman the streams, ponds and rivers surrounding Keystone have something for every angler. Summit Fly Fishing offers casting and fishing clinics as well as guided trips on the Snake River.
River Rafting – Two world-class adventure rivers, The Arkansas River and The Colorado River, are right out Keystone’s backdoor. The area boasts extreme whitewater to casual float trips and everything in between.
Golfing – Two remarkable golf courses featuring 36 incredible championship holes will amaze even the most refined golfers as they tee off into the light Rocky Mountain air. Open Memorial Day through September, the courses put a new meaning to “golfing on the edge”. For the family, Keystone also has a miniature golf course in River Run.
Mountain Biking – Take advantage of the mountain’s lift service to experience world-class downhill mountain biking terrain, complete with views of the Continental Divide and Lake Dillon. Members of your group that don’t wish to go down on two wheels can take the lift back down to safety. Or mountain bikers can try out any of over 100 miles of cross country biking and hiking trails that wind through the Keystone area. Bikes, helmets, and safety equipment rentals are available at the Adventure Center in Lakeside Village. The center also offers paddle boating, kayak and canoe rentals, and fish feeding activities. Printable bike trail maps can be found on Keystone Resort’s website.
Festivals – Summer in Keystone is the time to catch art shows, jazz festivals, a fiddle contest, Celtic festival, culinary galas and more! The 15th Annual Bluegrass and Beer Festival will be held this year August 6th – 7th. Enjoy mountain music, sample Colorado’s microbrews, and let the kids burn off energy in a free family Kidzone. Also in August, the 7th Annual Blues Festival and Art Show will be held. An art show and competition complete with tasty dishes and an array of brews and wines will be accompanied by live guitarists. Keystone also offers free weekly family events like storytelling, stargazing, craft nights, and gold-panning. Call for more information: 800-354-4FUN (4386).
Unique Adventures – In addition to the summer mountain activities mentioned above, Keystone has a few unique activities like a bungee trampoline, barn dances, beaver patrol, mine tours, and llama lunch hikes on Keystone Mountain.
Lodging – Whatever your reason for visiting Keystone in the summer, let the experts at Summit County Mountain Retreats provide accommodations for your Keystone Resort rental. Featuring homes and condos on the mountain or in town, Karen and William Fuller are happy to help you choose a vacation rental to make this your most memorable Colorado summer vacation!

Come see why many locals deem summer their favorite time of year!

Are you searching for an alternative to your regular family beach vacation? Then it is time to Discover Southport and Oak Island in North Carolina. With 28 miles of gorgeous Atlantic Ocean beachfront, the area excels in the standard beach goers activities like swimming, building sandcastles, combing for seashells, golf, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving and more. Lesser known attractions that your whole family can enjoy will get you off the beaten path and out of a vacation routine:
Learn about Southern History – The whole family can enjoy a FREE self-guided walking tour on the Historic Southport Trail. Make history come alive as you enjoy a relaxed one mile walk through charming Historic Southport. Continue a history lesson traveling a short distance to Wilmington, NC. On the way, stop at the Fort Fisher Civil War Museum. Remains of the earthen fort that kept the Cape Fear River and the port of Wilmington open to blockade runners, which delivered vital supplies to the Confederate armies until the fort fell on January 15, 1865. Among many historical points in Wilmington, the whole family will enjoy touring The USS North Carolina Battleship. She is preserved just as she was in World War II and has been the site for many dramatic documentations and action films.
Discover Under the Sea – Before you leave Fort Fisher, be sure to take the whole family to The North Carolina Aquarium. Here you can meet Luna, a rare albino alligator currently weighing in over 54 lobs and 6 feet in length. The kids will also enjoy hands on experience with sea stars and can sign up for a summer camp on the island. Best of all, you and your family will get to see close up what is living in the waters you are typically only swimming in.
Connect with Nature – Back on Oak Island there are many trails and parks for enjoying North Carolina’s exceptional natural environment. Be sure to visit the Oak Island Nature Center overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. The Center has live animal exhibits as well as educational activities and programs with walkways to the water. Dedicated to a former Mayor Dorothy Kelly, the Dot Kelly Memorial Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden is a natural setting that attracts these creatures so you and your family can enjoy them in their typical surrounding.
See it All – Get a bird’s eye view of the island as you fly down the coastline in an open air cockpit, waving at beachgoers and occasionally spotting dolphins, sea turtles and more. Oak Island Sport Planes also offers flight lessons for the adventurous types.
Stay all Summer – Whether you are looking for a weekend retreat or a month long getaway, Margarat Rudd & Associates Realtors can find a long or short-term vacation rental to suit your needs. Don’t cancel your summer plans yet! There are many free and inexpensive attractions in and around Orlando, Florida that will satisfy everyone in your family and have them begging to return year after year. Take a trip down memory lane at Old Town. This fun carnival-like attraction will take you back in time with old time cruise nights featuring cars from 1974 and older. Rock out to live bands and sing along with the oldies.
There’s also a variety of fun shops, carnival rides and dining areas for the whole family to enjoy.

Another family-friendly activity is the many Florida Museums. Florida has a fantastic selection of museums to explore from the Museum of Seminole County History to the Charles Hosmer Museum of American Art. Just because you’re not at the park, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the magical world of Disney. Downtown Disney admission is free. Browse the many unique shops or catch a live show or music event.
If you’re looking for something fun and educational there are a multitude of options. Black Hammock Adventures, located on Lake Jessup, provides free live alligator and bird exhibits. Cape Canaveral is just 45 minutes away and features the famed Kennedy Space Center where tours and activities can be enjoyed for a minimal cost. Kids will love the LEGO Imagination Center located in the Disney Downtown Marketplace. You will be in awe of this colossal building that is home to a 23-foot LEGO giraffe.

While you’re traveling, why stay in a crowded expensive hotel when you can find an affordable Orlando vacation rental that feels like a home away from home. At the end of the day, when the family has explored to their heart’s content, bring them back to your vacation rental where they can relax by the pool and make a snack in a full kitchen.

Make lasting memories with your family this year in Orlando, Florida!

More often than not, when people think of Orlando, Florida visions of Mickey Mouse ears and Disney princesses dance in their head. When someone says, “Florida Vacation” they’re usually not thinking of horseback rides, cattle drives and endangered panthers. Are you ready for a new kind of Florida Vacation?

Take a walk on the wild side at Forever Florida. Forever Florida is a Sunshine State hotspot for travelers who want to venture off the beaten path, and make their Floridian vacation an authentic one.
A unique piece of Florida’s rich history, Forever Florida offers many activities that the whole family will enjoy.

If you’re into high-flying adventure, take a trip on Florida’s first and only Zip Line Safari.

Choose from a day or night tour and soar 55 feet over Florida vegetation and wetlands.

The Zip Line Safari can amass speeds of up to 25 MPH. While you’re up there, keep an eye out for exciting wildlife especially at night! Don’t worry, if you miss any animals on your way down, stop by the wildlife interaction area at the end of the zip line to see alligators, a hybrid panther and more!
If you prefer a more “grounded” excursion, try a Horseback Safari or Rawhide Roundup.

The Horseback Safaris can last between two and three hours and will take you through acres of gorgeous Florida wildlife conservation, including nine ecosystems.

If there is a history buff in your group, you’ll be traveling over historic trails that date back to the 1500’s.

For those that have been dying to wear the cowboy boots in their closet, take advantage of the Rawhide Roundup. Spend the day with a genuine Cow Hunter on a cattle herd through Crescent J Ranch.

Hands on experience will teach you the ins and outs of daily life on a Florida ranch.

Again for those history lovers, the cattle you herd are Spanish Colonial Cattle and could be descendents of the cattle brought to Florida by Ponce De Leon in 1521.

More relaxing, but just as exploratory, a Coach Safari is another option during your time at Forever Florida. You’ll sit in an open-air safari coach while you make your way through acres of conservation.

The coach is elevated five feet above ground so sightseeing can be enjoyed by all.

Keep your eye out for panthers, black bears and white-tail deer as many animals make their homes on the lush property.

After you’ve spent the day enjoying the wilds of Florida, retire to the comfort of your Orlando vacation rental. Lounge by the pool or relax in your Jacuzzi, and gear up for whatever adventure is next.

St. Lucie County, Florida is embarking on a green initiative to facilitate the nation’s first sustainable community’s demonstration project. Although the details are a bit over my head, I was struck by the idea that a partnership was being made to move towards a greener economy. Included in the plan is a 65,000 square foot alternative energy center that will be incorporated as a real-world classroom with hands-on experiences for students at a local state college. Discussions are also under way to bring in from around the world leading scientists to the classrooms and energy center thus broadening the idea of sharing and partnering for a greener community.

The highly competitive grant was the only one awarded in the state of Florida. Community leaders and program partners have toured St. Lucie County and the Fort Pierce area looking for public, educational, manufacturing and industrial facilities in addition to commercial structures to be included in what they have termed the “Green Mile District.”

The idea of having a ‘green mile’ struck me as ironic knowing how popular a different ‘green’ is in the area. Port St. Lucie, Florida has some great greens in the form of PGA golf clubs!

For instance, you can basically have a PGA golf course in your back yard at your ‘home away from home’ at one of Florida’s golf resorts. Green abounds at these beautiful links that include courses designed by the famed Tom Fazio and Pete Dye.

Visitors wanting to save some ‘green’ can do so by checking out the golf specials and packages in Port St. Lucie.

Make the plan to save some green, hit that perfect shot to the green and visit a green community with a HUGE alternative energy center all in the same area. Your friends will be green with envy at the stories you come back telling of all your green experiences. Heck, I’m turning a little green myself.

Have you ever had a vacation where you needed a vacation when you were done just to recuperate from all the fun and activity?

Do the people in your party have such diverse taste in what they do to have fun, that it’s hard to please everyone all the time?

If you answered yes to either question, then you might want to start your vacation planning with Deep Creek Lake rentals and prepare for a delightful Maryland vacation experience full of giggles and stories to share that is sure to please everyone in your family or group.

Deep Creek Lake in Maryland seems to have every kind of vacation activity you could imagine no matter what time of year!

Adventure and outdoor enthusiasts can select from activities that exhilarate the senses such as water or snow skiing, wakeboarding and river rafting or experience the mountain coaster all year round.

If your senses are looking for a calmer, more tranquil feel, then visitors can choose to enjoy the peacefulness of snow-shoeing or cross country skiing, fly fishing or simply bobbing or floating on the lake.

Festivals more your thing? Then , don’t miss out on the Art & Wine and Highland Festivals. Visitors of all ages will find events to delight by visiting the local chamber for their calendar of events.

I can’t imagine a family or group that wouldn’t be able to find something to interest everyone in and around the Deep Creek Lake area. What’s even better is the close proximity to Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. With the hassles of flying, how nice is it that so many people can visit by driving from nearby?

Moving to Colorado after living in the Midwest farmland for many years has made me realize that you can have a vacation nearly every weekend when places are within easy driving distance. It seems like the same would be true for people in and around the Deep Creek Lake area. Iowa Farmlands? Not so much. I used to have to drive at least 40, if not 90 miles, just to reach the nearest interstate that would then take me another sizeable distance to some place you actually wanted to visit!

So, whether you travelling from near or far, your group is large or small, you’re looking for exhilaration or tranquility, a vacation in and around the Deep Creek Lake area of Maryland seems like a sure bet. It’s certainly going to be on my ‘list of places to see.’

The Gulf Shores’ beaches aren’t the only activity in and around Orange Beach for families to enjoy on their vacation. Families can take a high flying adventure with Hot Air Balloon Rides over the Gulf Shores. The warm gulf air keeps this activity going year round. It’s a great way to get away from the noise and hectic pace of daily life as you float over the countryside with just the occasional hiss of the burner interrupting your peacefulness.

History buffs and speed demons can step back in time with a ride in the Bird of Paradise. This open cockpit biplane built in 1928 is sure to please the thrill seeker. I will offer this one bit of advice, however. It may sound good to have the wind in your hair until you land and have to pull a comb through it! One of my first flights was in an open cockpit airplane when I was about six years old and the most lasting memory I still have (many years later) is the drama of getting my long hair combed out upon landing. Don’t let this be the only memory you take away from this high-flying experience. Instead take away a certificate and photo that is awarded to all who fly in this historical machine.

If staying on land is more your family’s style then be sure and plan a trip to the Track Family Recreation Center. Plenty of action for kids of all ages whether you’re a speed demon on the go-cart tracks or prefer the slower pace of miniature golf. You’re family will have so much fun here they may even forget that there are beautiful beaches to play on too!

Does your family enjoy music and want to take advantage of fewer crowds? Then bring them down for the annual, 10 day Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival held every November. Venues all along the coast offer up a unique opportunity to see and hear songwriters perform the songs that became some of America’s biggest hits. Songwriters perform in restaurants, bars and hang-outs along the coast, so porta-potty festival this is not! Add to that little to no cover charge and you have the makings for a wonderful beach vacation full of Orange Beach, Alabama Concerts. What a great way to get the wiggles out before hunkering down for the winter.

No matter what your family enjoys, you’re sure to find something to please everyone. Don’t forget that there are also beautiful beaches, lots of shopping and restaurants to complete your vacation planning.

Orlando offers a wide variety of fun things to do in the spring and summer months, at a variety of price points. Here are a few of our favorite activities:

Disney World – We can’t bring up Orlando without thoughts of the magic of Disney coming to mind. One of the most popular Orlando family vacation experiences, but it can be expensive. Be sure to save up for this one!

Universal Studios – For those who have already experienced Disney World, or have some teens in your group, Universal Studios should be on your list of things to experience while visiting Orlando. Visitors of all ages will enjoy the thrill rides, attractions, and dining options offered by Universal Studios!

Sea World Orlando – A must-visit attraction for groups bringing a marine lover along on vacation. Guests can visit scheduled shows in addition to a variety of attractions and fun experiences.

Water Parks – Looking for a cool alternative to the summer heat? Check out some of the popular area water parks, and choose your favorite!

Beaches – There are several great Florida beaches within reasonable driving distance from the Orlando area, so why not take advantage of Orlando’s centralized location and check out a few of them? Some of the most popular include Cocoa, Daytona, and St. Petersburg beaches. Be sure to pack your sunscreen!

Free Attractions – Many people worry about what a trip to Orlando will do to their budgets. Have no fear, we’ve got a great list of free things to do in Orlando! Choose from outdoor activities, museums, beaches, and Downtown Disney for some fun in the sun that won’t break the bank!

If you or someone you know is an avid golfer, you’re aware of the passion that goes into the game. A game that makes little sense to those who don’t play. Golf has a huge following throughout the world, and the US is no exception to the rule. For centuries, the game of golf has been one that facilitated friendships, business deals, and family bonding.

Heading to the East Coast this summer? Love great food? Be sure to visit Martha’s Vineyard during your travels. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, a family vacation or a girl’s night out, one visit to Martha’s Vineyard, and you’ll never want to leave!

The island covers about 100 square miles, and is divided up into several small towns. Each town has a distinct personality, our favorite being Vineyard Haven, also known as Tisbury. The Vineyard Haven area is known for great shopping, dining, and is home to our favorite Martha’s Vineyard Restaurant.

With about 15,000 residents year round, and over 100,000 residents in the summer, activity in the area swells in the summer, but the island is worth a visit any time of year. We recommend avoiding the area around the 4th of July if crowds aren’t your thing, as this is the island’s busiest weekend of the year.

Stay in one of the locally owned Inns, spend a day at the town beach, and explore the shops around town -there is never a shortage of things to do while visiting Martha’s Vineyard.

If you’re heading to Massachusetts, spend a day or two at Martha’s Vineyard, you’re sure to be pleased!

There arent many things on earth more beautiful than the Tetons. I visited Jackson Hole once in the summer many years ago and I still think about that trip almost weekly. We did a lot of sightseeing, ate great food, shopped like crazy and had a great time in general. One thing we did NOT do was whitewater raft. I wish we had, especially after seeing this video on YouTube!

Video Courtesy Karen Eason Photography

This is the ultimate commercial for why Jackson is so much fun in the summer. I cant imagine having a better time with friends and family. Some best bets from our visit and from reviews I’ve read lately are:

Get a vacation rental – even though the food is great here, it can be expensive. If you choose a condo or home rental you will have a kitchen to cook a few meals in, even if you just do breakfast in you can save a good deal of money.

If you’re headed to Grand Teton or Yellowstone, leave early. Summer time traffic in both parks can be a bit of a problem sometimes, so be prepared to wait and be prepared to have FUN!

Book your “extra-curricular” activities before you get there. Rafting, climbing and other types of activities book up quick, if you make reservations for these things before you even get to Jackson you’re guaranteed the chance to participate.

The animals are WILD, people – dont try to feed them skittles or some other sort of “people food.” Buffalo are not nice animals, they’re beautiful, but mean – stay away! Same with elk and moose.

Most of all, come with a few extra memory sticks for the camera, let loose and have a good time – you wont regret it.

Dining Recommendations:
Breakfast – You cant miss The Bunnery – best bread in the country, let along Jackson Hole
Lunch – We enjoyed the Cadillac Grille when we were there, but the Tripadvisor.com reviews are mixed a bit. Their burgers over at Billy’s Giant Hamburgers were great (one side is the grille, one side is the hamburger joint)!
Dinner – We liked the Mangy Moose – and they have decent Tripadvisor reviews. The gift shop that is attached is great fun also.

Lodging Recommendations:
Mountain Property Management of Jackson Hole offers great vacation rentals and is definately a Jackson Hole Lodging alternative to hotels.
Wagon Wheel Village – Motel rooms for budget travelers to Jackson – I havent stayed here but they have pretty good reviews in Tripadvisor.

Mountain biking is big in Tahoe and with plenty of up and down, the emphasis is on definitely on “mountain”.

Terrain
Trail surfaces tend to be dirt cushioned with soft, but squirrely pine needles and are usually studded with angular rocks that add to the challenge. Depending upon where you ride, it’s not unusual to traverse long rock garden sections which can consist of sharp, broken shale. Don’t forget your patch kit and pump. Savvy locals carry a spare tube and tire, as well. With cold streams everywhere, be prepared for wet feet and brakes. It’s not usual to find downed trees across the paths, which sounds like a minor inconvenience until you relalise the giant tree trunks are often 3 feet thick.

Tahoe Rim Trail
It’s possible to circumnavigate the lake on this system of trails, but it is a hugh undertaking requiring a lot of planning. Try some of the day trip sized sections instead.

Nevada

The eastern side of the lake, which is in Nevada, offers spectacular rocky trails that wind along the lake rim high above the water. Check in with a local bike shops when planning your ride. They can help you run a shuttle and are up-to-date or which days you can bike and which days are reserved for horseback riders. Some offer guided tours, as well.

California
The southwestern section boasts some great California State Parks, such as Sugar Pine Point, where you can hit the trails right from your campsite and wind up and into the hills. There are easy family-friendly paths leading around the parks and down to the lake, as well.

Author’s Pick
One of my favorite places to just ride for fun and exercise is the Nordic Ski Center on the west side of the lake. Some of the paths have natural and man-assisted obstacles and whoop-de-doos that let you practice your skills. This is a maze of wide trails and nearly all of them will return you to your starting point at the Nordic Center parking lot. However, check the map and keep your bearings or you may find yourself descending through the wrong drainage and end up miles away.

Ski Areas with Mountain Biking
Some of the numerous ski resorts around Tahoe offer lift-assisted riding in the off-season. Northstar, at the north end of the lake is probably the most popular with the adrenaline crowd and has more than 100 miles of trails and a mountain bike park where competitions and training are held throughout the summer.

Road Biking
Although there are plenty of riders who do it, they are much, much braver than I am. The traffic can be thick and irritable on the curvy, two lane, mostly-shoulderless roads that wind around Lake Tahoe. I’ll stick to the trails!

Nightlife for Teens and Tweens
We’ve all been to a beach resort that offered plenty of things to do while the sun was out, but shut up tighter than a clam after dark, leaving your teenagers lazing around moaning “there’s nothing to do”. Myrtle Beach is not one of them. The multitude of amusement parks will give them the crowds and excitement they crave and the boardwalk offers endless opportunities for mingling with those of the opposite sex.

Golf
Myrtle Beach is like an amusement park for golfers. The venue provides a showcase for nearly every big name links designer and you get a phenomenal choice of styles and terrain. The weather can occasionally shut you out, but the mild climate generally allows for year round play. That’s a plus, since, with over 120 courses, you can play a different one every day for 4 months without replaying a single hole. There’s a lot of competition in the area and you’ll find the best deals by booking one of the many Myrtle Beach golf specials available online.

Baseball
Ever heard of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans? They’re a farm team for the Atlanta Braves and play in the Carolina League against other minor league teams at the 4,300 seat Coastal Federal Field. Fans large and small enjoy the hometown feel of the scene where they can watch and meet soon-to-be stars. Another cool to-do for hardball freaks is The Ripken Experience Cal Ripken’s new youth tourney center in Myrtle Beach.

Okay, listen up. I’m only going to whisper this secret to you once, “Ruby Canyon and Horsethief Canyon”. This incredible float, just west of Grand Junction, Colorado is a rafting experience extrordinaire.

For 26 miles, the Colorado river slices through a dreamlike southwestern landscape of towering canyons and ageless black rock formations. Except during extreme spring run-off, the pace is lazy, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and play in the water.

No whitewater experience is necessary, but once you cast off, you’re committed to making the entire run. So, travel is self-contained and you must be prepared to deal with any problems that might arise along the way. By the time you drag yourself off the river 1-3 days later at Westwater Utah, you’ll already be planning your next trip.

If whitewater makes you wary, this is a great way to enjoy river running without suffering from adrenaline poisoning. See the BLM website for details and check with outfitters in Grand Junction or Fruita for help planning your adventure and getting set up with equipment and shuttles.

Personally, I never thought of Alabama as a great beach vacation, but boy was I worng. I suspect the natives would like to keep this secret to themselves. The sands are fine white “sugar”. The waters glow in cool emerald and the combination is irresistable.

In addition to ocean beaches, this intricate tidal area is laced with rivers, deltas, back bays, lagoons, lakes and bayous. To get you started, here a few of the most popular places for sun, surf and sand:

Fort Morgan

The main attraction in this area is the Bon Secour (safe harbor, in French) National Wildlife Refuge, which has 6800 acres devoted to habitat for native plants, migratory birds, nesting sea turtles and, yes, the endangered Alabama beach mouse. You can park at the end of Mobile Street or approach the all-natural beach through the sea palmettos and dunes of the Pine Beach Trail.

Gulf Shores

The most popular beach is at the end of Highway 59, where most of the action is. You’ll find a large parking lot, boardwalk, pavilions, beach volleyball, restrooms and places to eat and drink. This is also where the National Shrimp Festival is held – an enormous seafood celebration that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every October.
Public parking and beach access is available at 2nd, 5th, 6th and 13th Streets. if you’re lucky enough to be staying at one of the many condos in the Gulf Shores section, there’s also convenient pedestrian access at 4th Street.

Gulf State Park

Elbow room and every imaginable facility are the highlights of this coastal playground. Besides about 2 miles of ocean beach, there are two large lakes and a long lagoon to fish and frolic in. The park is outfitted to accommodate large groups, with an enormous pavilion on the beach and a picnic area on Lake Shelby. There’s a nature center with interpretive trails, camping, RV spots and nice cabins you can rent by the night or by the week.

Orange Beach

Perdido Point, with over a mile of shoreline, and Cotton Bayou Beach are the best public beaches in this area. Both offer parking and Perdido Point has long boardwalk for strolling, as well. Surfers congregate at Alabama Point just inland from Perdido Point.

Perdido Point, with over a mile of shoreline, and Cotton Bayou Beach are the best public beaches in this area. Both offer parking and Perdido Point has long boardwalk for strolling, as well. Surfers congregate at Alabama Point just inland from Perdido Point.

Colorado is a premier whitewater rafting destination. The tumbling waters of the Arkansas, Poudre, San Juan, Eagle, Blue, Crystal, Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers are all stuff campfire stories are made of. But it’s not all whitewater.

There are many stretches of riffling river throughout the state to enjoy, as well. Day trips, overnights and multi-day runs ideal for ordinary river rats who want to pilot their own craft and immerse themselves in the great outdoors for relaxation instead of an adreline rush.

Nothing beats drifting through sky-high canyons with a cold drink, an old dog and a good friend. My favorite trip is one close to home. A 2-3 hour float I can take on a moment’s notice and shoehorn in between work and sundown on hot summer afternoons.

Grizzly to Two Rivers, aka Grizz, is the town run for Glenwood Springs – a 6 mile section of the Colorado River that winds through lower Glenwood Canyon. The put in is at the Grizzly Creek Recreation Area and the take out at Two Rivers Park. Both ends offer water, restrooms, parking and launches.

The river can be pretty scary for water wimps during the run-off, but if you don’t mind getting splashed, the icy wave trains are a thrill. By mid-June, it’s mostly riffles that can be negotiated in a PFD and an inner tube. Beaches and swimming holes abound and natural hot springs seep into the river as you approach Glenwood Springs.

Grizzly draws everyone with something that floats on scorching summer weekends, it’s heavily used by the many commercial rafting companies from Aspen to Vail, and it’s sandwiched between a busy Interstate highway and a railroad track. But don’t let any of that deter you. As soon as you hit the water, your attitude will ease, your stress will soften and you’ll feel like one of the lucky ones. Raft on!

See Colorado River Rafting in Grand Junction, too.

Beach Vacations
Beach resorts can be perfect for your next family vacation getaway. Some of the best resorts are in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

Mexico
Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations. It is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Los Cabos features luxury hotels, championship golf courses and some of the best sport fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking and much more.

The Caribbean
The Cayman Islands offer many things for many people. 99% of the travelers visit Grand Cayman Island. It is easy to see why people go here. Of the islands this island offers the most when it comes to resorts and hotels. The fabulous snorkeling and scuba diving is not to be missed. When diving, you will think you are in a pet shop aquarium. The fish are abundant and the stingrays are gentle and fun to watch. If time permits, rent a Jeep and cruise around the Island.

Hawaii
Hawaii offers many choices for the traveling family. Each island is unique and offers something for everyone. Kauai is less touristy but still offers much to do. The surfing and snorkeling are not to be missed. Be sure to take a day and drive up to Waimea Canyon. This canyon offers many photo opportunities, and spots to get out and hike near beautiful waterfalls. Maui offers white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Maui also offers great sightseeing and wonderful shopping. Of the islands, Hawaii, also known as “The Big Island” is the largest. Here you can visit the only active volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. You will also find wonderful resorts, pristine beaches, great nightlife, fine dining and shopping.

South Carolina

Hilton Head Island offers a great beach vacation location – with plenty to do for romantic couples or families. There are a ton of activities and attractions in and around Hilton Head Island that will give both the young and the young at heart plenty to fill their days. Summer mid-day temperatures hover around 85-90 degrees – warm but perfect for beachcombing and swimming or kayaking in the surf or on the sound. Water temperatures average in the 80s from June through September so summer is a perfect time to visit.

When planning a family vacation getaway, the choices can be overwhelming. What should you do? Where should you go? To make life easier, these questions should be answered before you start planning. Let’s take a few minutes and help you answer these questions before you get started with the planning.

What Should You Do?
How does skiing fresh powder of Vail’s Blue Sky Basin, or relaxing in the white sand of Hawaii’s beaches and hitting a hole in one at one of Hilton Head’s many golf courses sound to you? Ski, beach and golf vacations are great choices for families. Keep in mind, no matter what type of vacation you choose – there are many Vail Resort Lodging and Hilton Head Island Golf packages to choose from.
