Known as “The Soul of Seattle,” Pike Place Market was originally brought to life on August 17, 1907 when farmers brought their produce directly to the people of Seattle who showed up in overwhelming numbers. Currently, there are eleven Marine Life Conservation Districts established around the islands that preserve the glorious natural beauty that Hawaii has to offer. The conservation districts are essential for local residents and have also become preferred spots for diving, snorkeling and other underwater activities. Get to know a little about the Honolua-Mokule’ia Bay District here:

Moving to Colorado after living in the Midwest farmland for many years has made me realize that you can have a vacation nearly every weekend when places are within easy driving distance.  It seems like the same would be true for people in and around the Deep Creek Lake area.  Iowa Farmlands?  Not so much.  I used to have to drive at least 40, if not 90 miles, just to reach the nearest interstate that would then take me another sizeable distance to some place you actually wanted to visit! 

 So, whether you travelling from near or far, your group is large or small, you’re looking for exhilaration or tranquility, a vacation in and around the Deep Creek Lake area of Maryland seems like a sure bet.  It’s certainly going to be on my ‘list of places to see.’

                History buffs and speed demons can step back in time with a ride in the Bird of Paradise.  This open cockpit biplane built in 1928 is sure to please the thrill seeker.  I will offer this one bit of advice, however. It may sound good to have the wind in your hair until you land and have to pull a comb through it!  One of my first flights was in an open cockpit airplane when I was about six years old and the most lasting memory I still have (many years later) is the drama of getting my long hair combed out upon landing.  Don’t let this be the only memory you take away from this high-flying experience.  Instead take away a certificate and photo that is awarded to all who fly in this historical machine.

                If staying on land is more your family’s style then be sure and plan a trip to the Track Family Recreation Center.  Plenty of action for kids of all ages whether you’re a speed demon on the go-cart tracks or prefer the slower pace of miniature golf.  You’re family will have so much fun here they may even forget that there are beautiful beaches to play on too!

                Does your family enjoy music and want to take advantage of fewer crowds?  Then bring them down for the annual, 10 day Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival held every November.  Venues all along the coast offer up a unique opportunity to see and hear songwriters perform the songs that became some of America’s biggest hits.  Songwriters perform in restaurants, bars and hang-outs along the coast, so porta-potty festival this is not!  Add to that little to no cover charge and you have the makings for a wonderful beach vacation full of Orange Beach, Alabama Concerts.  What a great way to get the wiggles out before hunkering down for the winter.

              No matter what your family enjoys, you’re sure to find something to please everyone.  Don’t forget that there are also beautiful beaches, lots of shopping and restaurants to complete your vacation planning.

Playing in the snow makes me happy, and if you like it just a little bit, then this may be the ideal place for your next winter vacation.  Yes, some people really do plan vacations to be where there is snow and sun at the same time.  Not only is Oregon beautiful country, but there you’ll find snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding including cross country trials and all the shopping, restaurants and activities to fill the time in between.

Just so happens that just a short drive from Sunriver is one of North America’s largest ski resorts.  Mt. Bachelor Resort is home to some 3700 acres of boarding and skiing fun.  For a reasonable value snow nuts will enjoy some varied terrain that is sure to please all levels of competence.  There are 71 groomed trails and 13 lift facilities with current plans to expand both lift operations and trails in the near future.  Fifteen percent of the terrain is graded as Novice, 25% Intermediate and the other 60% is Advanced or Expert terrain.  What a great place to bring the whole family for sun and ski!  And did I happen to mention that on average the snow base is some 150-200 inches and that there’s 3,365 feet of vertical drop?

Feel like a totally new experience?  How about a dog sled ride?  Just imagine, riding in an Iditarod Dog Sled taking in the breathtaking views of the local mountain scenery. You could even plan for an overnight expedition.  Sledding and snowtubing sound like fun too?  Take some slides down the 800 foot ride in the Snowblast Tubing Park on the Mountain.

After all the fun, there are plenty of options for shopping or just hanging out.  But dining in the area leaves nothing to be desired.  There are many restaurants to choose from and something to satisfy the most discerning of palates.  Or if you want to stay in the privacy of your vacation rental in Sunriver Oregon, you can find groceries and goodies in town.

Not only is the area good for winter fun, sounds like it may be just as amazing in the summer.  Everything from biking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, golfing and so much more in the high desert of Oregon.   Sounds like a great place for the next family vacation whether it’s summer or winter.

Whenever I book a trip, I always opt for the travel insurance. I can never predict what may happen and, without adequate protection, all of the money I have paid for airline tickets, rentals, excursions, lodging and the like can just be washed down the drain and there’s nothing I can do about it.

For a long vacation or a trip overseas, this can amount to a significant amount of money that you cannot afford to lose. Perhaps you’ve been saving for a year or more to pay for the trip. Even worse is when you put it on credit cards and have to pay it off (plus interest) anyway, without ever enjoying it.

Depending on the policy you choose, trip insurance generally runs about 5-10% of the trip cost. All kinds of policies are available that will cover you in all types of situations. Be certain to read and understand what you are being insured against and weigh whether that is appropriate in your circumstances. For example, if you are going to France, you may not need hurricane coverage, but it you are going to the Caribbean in September, that option is definitely worth paying.

In addition, you want to make certain you are insured against accidents and illnesses you may experience while abroad. Your regular medical insurance may not cover you, especially if you’re active and participate in sports where injuries are not uncommon.

I like to think about travel insurance as the way of insuring my vacation. If I get sick, if the mountain passes close due to snow and I can’t get to the airport, if there’s a family emergency I can’t ignore, or if any one of dozens of other unexpected things happens, I’m covered. I don’t lose the money I have invested and can take my trip at a later time. This gives me great piece of mind and makes the cost of the insurance very worthwhile.

This video is from a loggerhead turtle hatch that was on the gulf coast of florida somewhere. Anna Maria Island is home to the Anna Maria Turtle Watch. Every spring and summer volunteers walk the beaches at sunrise to report nesting and hatching activity. Imagine seeing these little babies crawling to the sea every morning!

Take stock of what is available. Do you have some frequent flier miles you can cash in? Don’t forget about the voucher from that last trip you took and got bumped to a later flight because of the weather or an overbooking. Sometimes last minute trips become expensive because the airfare is outrageous. If you’re traveling in off season, last minute fares could save you money, the airlines will be looking to fill empty seats.

Where do you want to go? The U.S. Virgin Islands offer a great getaway without a lot of hassle. and best of all – you DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT! That’s right, if you visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, you don’t need to hassle with a passport. As of January 2007 about 73% of Americans did NOT have a passport.
You have four days, what do you want to do? A day on the beach is a must. What about some shopping or snorkeling? Do you like to golf or fish? Plan some time for laying in a hammock by the villa and getting some much deserved rest. Visit the island travel pages to plan some of the activities you’d like to try. Because you’re traveling last minute, it might be a good idea to call and be sure you can book a tee time or a trip with one of the deep sea fishing charter companies.

All in all – a last minute trip is within reach if you have realistic expectations and you prepare accordingly. Don’t expect the trip of a lifetime, you didn’t have time to plan all of the activities you’d have to try to make it unforgettable – but you can get a taste of life on St. John and enjoy yourself away from the rat-race for a few days.

I was born on the Oregon Coast, and as a family we try to visit at least every two years. I don’t have any family left there, but I still get a thrill when we drive the last few miles into Lincoln City and catch our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. Although my family moved away when I was just 6 months old, every return feels like a homecoming of sorts. Of course, there are a few things we must do every visit – I would be heartbroken if we skipped them, and oh yeah, the kids would too!

Mo’s Restaurant is a MUST. I hate fish, never have liked it – but when we’re on vacation in Oregon, I eat it like crazy. Mo’s has the BEST clam chowder – and I don’t like clam chowder – at all! Yes there are a lot of tourists, and you usually have to wait in line, but I’ve never said “Ugh, I’m sick of this” and we eat there almost daily the 2 weeks we’re on the coast. Mo’s has locations in Florence, Otter Rock, Newport (2 locations), Lincoln City and Cannon Beach. You can also order their chowder base online, which we do every New Years. They ship it in dry ice via FedEx Overnight and it’s TOTALLY worth it!

Tillamook Cheese Factory is located in Tillamook, OR – about an hour’s drive north of Lincoln City. Beyond the beautiful scenery in every direction, Tillamook is kind of fun. There isnt much there, but the cheese factory is a really neat experience and they have a retail store when you’re done with the tour – the Ice Cream is TO DIE FOR!

Newport Aquarium is located South of Lincoln City – about a 1/2 hr drive – and was formerly the home of Keiko – the whale featured in the Free Willy movies. Keiko’s aquarium was renovated into a series of walk-through aquariums that feature awesome sharks and other amazing types of ocean life. There are also sea otter and marine bird exhibits – and you can spend a good 1/2 to 3/4 of a day here just wandering and taking photos.

Southern Oregon Coast Vacations

The Sea Lion Caves north of Florence is a cant-miss. This natural sea cavern is home to around 200 noisy Stellar Sea Lions. While visiting you can expect to see the sea lions in their natural habitat – gigantic bulls and even the young can be seen on the rocks below. The kids love this place!

Deep Sea Fishing is a must – for those that can handle the rocking of the ocean. If you get car sick or the thought of most amusement rides turns you green, deep sea fishing is NOT for you. My husband went once, and spent 6 miserable hours at sea…I had a blast. We always book through Tradewinds Charters out of Depoe Bay (about halfway between Lincoln City and Newport) which touts itself as the smallest harbor in the world. Tradewinds runs a fleet of over 10 boats and you can usually get a reservation at some point in time during your stay. The picture at the right is of the Sunrise and I’ve been out with Captain Craig twice. He’s great and we always catch fish. I always book ahead before we even leave home, to make sure I get a spot. The nice thing about having a spouse that is a poor sailor is there is always someone to watch the kids!

Some things to remember:

The coast is NOT tropical – the highs in July and August are around 70 degrees and you’ll need to pack accordingly. We always spend a few days in Bend before we head to the coast and the climate change from the desert of central/eastern Oregon to the coast is severe. Pack jeans and sweaters – leave your bathing suit at home if you plan on swimming in the ocean – it makes your feet hurt to just walk in it.

The coast IS a tourist destination – so you’ll have to deal with traffic & people – it’s not the quiet quaint getaway that someone visiting Mendocino, CA might expect – it’s teeming with people most days and this can pose frustrations – remember – you’re on vacation and you’re NOT punching a time clock – take your time and have fun!

Those coming back into the country by sea and land may still use a driver’s license and birth certificate to prove their citizenship. However, that is expected to change in the near future.

Currently about 73% of all US citizens do not have passports, so this may cause a shift in travel patterns over the next few years. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands expect an influx of American vacationers, since they are the only Caribbean destinations not affected by the new rules.
