Function is the key in renovating the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. Visitors are not going to notice much of a change after this four year renovation project is complete with most of the changes focusing on updating the public market’s core infrastructure to take it through its next century. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems have been updated and important historic buildings are benefiting from improved seismic stability. Continuing work will improve accessibility to the market with three new elevators and an extensive bathroom remodeling procedure.

Known as “The Soul of Seattle,” Pike Place Market was originally brought to life on August 17, 1907 when farmers brought their produce directly to the people of Seattle who showed up in overwhelming numbers. The farmers’ goods were sold out by 11:00 am thus beginning a supply and demand market that opened its own building with every space filled by the end of that first year. Today, the market is internationally known as America’s premier farmers’ market housing over 200 year round businesses.

“The Market,” as it is known by the locals, pulls in nearly 10 million visitors a year to enjoy shopping, dining, and entertainment provided by street performers and musicians. The Market remains open during the renovation and with Phase II of IV wrapping up this month many businesses will be relocated back to their original locations and seasonal vendors returning. Heritage Tours also continue during construction and are offered daily each weekday but must be scheduled in advance. See The Market Foundation for more information on tours that will illustrate The Market in a way many visitors never get to see.

To get the full experience of The Market, we recommend a multi-day visit. While touring Seattle, stay only minutes from all the shopping and entertainment at Hotel Five, one of the premier hotels in Seattle. With plush mattresses and linens, a breakfast and lunch café, business traveler amenities, and a well-equipped fitness center, Hotel Five is centrally located to be your home away from home while visiting the historic Pike Place Market and the vibrant city of Seattle, Washington.

Protecting the majesty that is Hawaii and its surrounding islands is no easy feat. Regardless, local residents and government bodies have made it their calling to safeguard the lush vegetation and unique ocean animals of Hawaii by helping to maintain Hawaii State Marine Life Conservation Districts like Honolua Bay and Mokule’ia Bay.

Currently, there are eleven Marine Life Conservation Districts established around the islands that preserve the glorious natural beauty that Hawaii has to offer. The conservation districts are essential for local residents and have also become preferred spots for diving, snorkeling and other underwater activities. Get to know a little about the Honolua-Mokule’ia Bay District here:

Both bays are located near Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii. Kapalua Resort is proud to persevere in its mission to maintain the 22,000 acres it rests on and keep it established as not only luxury lodging, but as a safe place for the flora and fauna and fishes of the area.

Mokule’ia Bay is known to the locals simply as “slaughterhouse”. Years ago a slaughterhouse and tanning (animal hide tanning that is) shop was located directly on the edge of the cliffs that overlook the beach. The slaughterhouse closed more than fifty years ago.

Both Honolua and Mokule’ia Bays were established in 1978 and are comprised of 45 acres.

If you generally think of Colorado as a ski vacation Mecca, let me introduce you to the “off-season”. Summers in Colorado are known for whitewater rafting, camping, hiking, golfing, mountain biking, fly-fishing, festivals, horseback riding and more! And Keystone’s central Colorado location excels in all of these Rocky Mountain summer activities.

Flyfishing – AugustKids029 Whether you are a beginning or experienced fly-fisherman the streams, ponds and rivers surrounding Keystone have something for every angler. Summit Fly Fishing offers casting and fishing clinics as well as guided trips on the Snake River.
River Rafting – Two world-class adventure rivers, The Arkansas River and The Colorado River, are right out Keystone’s backdoor. The area boasts extreme whitewater to casual float trips and everything in between.
Golfing – Two remarkable golf courses featuring 36 incredible championship holes will amaze even the most refined golfers as they tee off into the light Rocky Mountain air. Open Memorial Day through September, the courses put a new meaning to “golfing on the edge”. For the family, Keystone also has a miniature golf course in River Run.
Mountain Biking – Take advantage of the mountain’s lift service to experience world-class downhill mountain biking terrain, complete with views of the Continental Divide and Lake Dillon. Members of your group that don’t wish to go down on two wheels can take the lift back down to safety. Or mountain bikers can try out any of over 100 miles of cross country biking and hiking trails that wind through the Keystone area. Bikes, helmets, and safety equipment rentals are available at the Adventure Center in Lakeside Village. The center also offers paddle boating, kayak and canoe rentals, and fish feeding activities. Printable bike trail maps can be found on Keystone Resort’s website.
Festivals – Summer in Keystone is the time to catch art shows, jazz festivals, a fiddle contest, Celtic festival, culinary galas and more! The 15th Annual Bluegrass and Beer Festival will be held this year August 6th – 7th. Enjoy mountain music, sample Colorado’s microbrews, and let the kids burn off energy in a free family Kidzone. Also in August, the 7th Annual Blues Festival and Art Show will be held. An art show and competition complete with tasty dishes and an array of brews and wines will be accompanied by live guitarists. Keystone also offers free weekly family events like storytelling, stargazing, craft nights, and gold-panning. Call for more information: 800-354-4FUN (4386).
Unique Adventures – In addition to the summer mountain activities mentioned above, Keystone has a few unique activities like a bungee trampoline, barn dances, beaver patrol, mine tours, and llama lunch hikes on Keystone Mountain.
Lodging – Whatever your reason for visiting Keystone in the summer, let the experts at Summit County Mountain Retreats provide accommodations for your Keystone Resort rental. Featuring homes and condos on the mountain or in town, Karen and William Fuller are happy to help you choose a vacation rental to make this your most memorable Colorado summer vacation!

Come see why many locals deem summer their favorite time of year!

Are you searching for an alternative to your regular family beach vacation? Then it is time to Discover Southport and Oak Island in North Carolina. With 28 miles of gorgeous Atlantic Ocean beachfront, the area excels in the standard beach goers activities like swimming, building sandcastles, combing for seashells, golf, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving and more. Lesser known attractions that your whole family can enjoy will get you off the beaten path and out of a vacation routine:
Learn about Southern History – The whole family can enjoy a FREE self-guided walking tour on the Historic Southport Trail. Make history come alive as you enjoy a relaxed one mile walk through charming Historic Southport. Continue a history lesson traveling a short distance to Wilmington, NC. On the way, stop at the Fort Fisher Civil War Museum. Remains of the earthen fort that kept the Cape Fear River and the port of Wilmington open to blockade runners, which delivered vital supplies to the Confederate armies until the fort fell on January 15, 1865. Among many historical points in Wilmington, the whole family will enjoy touring The USS North Carolina Battleship. She is preserved just as she was in World War II and has been the site for many dramatic documentations and action films.
Discover Under the Sea – Before you leave Fort Fisher, be sure to take the whole family to The North Carolina Aquarium. Here you can meet Luna, a rare albino alligator currently weighing in over 54 lobs and 6 feet in length. The kids will also enjoy hands on experience with sea stars and can sign up for a summer camp on the island. Best of all, you and your family will get to see close up what is living in the waters you are typically only swimming in.
Connect with Nature – Back on Oak Island there are many trails and parks for enjoying North Carolina’s exceptional natural environment. Be sure to visit the Oak Island Nature Center overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. The Center has live animal exhibits as well as educational activities and programs with walkways to the water. Dedicated to a former Mayor Dorothy Kelly, the Dot Kelly Memorial Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden is a natural setting that attracts these creatures so you and your family can enjoy them in their typical surrounding.
See it All – Get a bird’s eye view of the island as you fly down the coastline in an open air cockpit, waving at beachgoers and occasionally spotting dolphins, sea turtles and more. Oak Island Sport Planes also offers flight lessons for the adventurous types.
Stay all Summer – Whether you are looking for a weekend retreat or a month long getaway, Margarat Rudd & Associates Realtors can find a long or short-term vacation rental to suit your needs. Vacation rental lodging is perfect for a family or group vacation where you want the cost savings and convenience of having your own kitchen, washer/dryer, and parking.

St. John, home to the Virgin Islands National Park, is easy to explore when you have your own transportation. Two main roads cross the island; one road runs across the center of the island and another along the north shore. However, if you want to get off the main roads, many other trails and dirt roads can take you through magnificent unspoiled forests, weaving through scenic lookout points, and ending at the shoreline of a fabulous beach. Make sure you have a four-wheel drive jeep for a couple of reasons. First, some island roads are rough and four wheel drive greatly enhances your driving ability. Second, St John and Tortola have some steep hills plus concrete roads that get very slippery when it rains. You will definitely appreciate the added traction and safety of four wheel drive should you get caught driving in a cloudburst.

If you are debating renting a jeep versus public transportation, here is a thought. Taxis and bus service to remote areas of the island do not exist. If you are planning on staying near your Caribbean vacation rental then you can get away with not renting a car. But, if you want to explore the island at your own pace and discover the beauty of unspoiled beaches and tropical forest, then a four-wheel drive jeep is for you. Here are a couple of driving facts for tourists to St. John:

Driving in the Virgin Islands is on the left side of the road.

Vehicles are typical American cars with left side steering.

Valid US and international driver’s licenses can be used while visiting the Virgin Islands for up to 90 days.

If you decide jeeping is the right choice for your next vacation, let Caribbean Villa & Resort Management handle your Virgin Island car rental when you stay in one of their exclusive condos or villas.

Have you ever had a vacation where you needed a vacation when you were done just to recuperate from all the fun and activity?

Do the people in your party have such diverse taste in what they do to have fun, that it’s hard to please everyone all the time?

If you answered yes to either question, then you might want to start your vacation planning with Deep Creek Lake rentals and prepare for a delightful Maryland vacation experience full of giggles and stories to share that is sure to please everyone in your family or group.

Deep Creek Lake in Maryland seems to have every kind of vacation activity you could imagine no matter what time of year!

Adventure and outdoor enthusiasts can select from activities that exhilarate the senses such as water or snow skiing, wakeboarding and river rafting or experience the mountain coaster all year round.

If your senses are looking for a calmer, more tranquil feel, then visitors can choose to enjoy the peacefulness of snow-shoeing or cross country skiing, fly fishing or simply bobbing or floating on the lake.

Festivals more your thing? Then , don’t miss out on the Art & Wine and Highland Festivals. Visitors of all ages will find events to delight by visiting the local chamber for their calendar of events.

I can’t imagine a family or group that wouldn’t be able to find something to interest everyone in and around the Deep Creek Lake area. What’s even better is the close proximity to Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. With the hassles of flying, how nice is it that so many people can visit by driving from nearby?

Moving to Colorado after living in the Midwest farmland for many years has made me realize that you can have a vacation nearly every weekend when places are within easy driving distance. It seems like the same would be true for people in and around the Deep Creek Lake area. Iowa Farmlands? Not so much. I used to have to drive at least 40, if not 90 miles, just to reach the nearest interstate that would then take me another sizeable distance to some place you actually wanted to visit!

So, whether you travelling from near or far, your group is large or small, you’re looking for exhilaration or tranquility, a vacation in and around the Deep Creek Lake area of Maryland seems like a sure bet. It’s certainly going to be on my ‘list of places to see.’

The Gulf Shores’ beaches aren’t the only activity in and around Orange Beach for families to enjoy on their vacation. Families can take a high flying adventure with Hot Air Balloon Rides over the Gulf Shores. The warm gulf air keeps this activity going year round. It’s a great way to get away from the noise and hectic pace of daily life as you float over the countryside with just the occasional hiss of the burner interrupting your peacefulness.

History buffs and speed demons can step back in time with a ride in the Bird of Paradise. This open cockpit biplane built in 1928 is sure to please the thrill seeker. I will offer this one bit of advice, however. It may sound good to have the wind in your hair until you land and have to pull a comb through it! One of my first flights was in an open cockpit airplane when I was about six years old and the most lasting memory I still have (many years later) is the drama of getting my long hair combed out upon landing. Don’t let this be the only memory you take away from this high-flying experience. Instead take away a certificate and photo that is awarded to all who fly in this historical machine.

If staying on land is more your family’s style then be sure and plan a trip to the Track Family Recreation Center. Plenty of action for kids of all ages whether you’re a speed demon on the go-cart tracks or prefer the slower pace of miniature golf. You’re family will have so much fun here they may even forget that there are beautiful beaches to play on too!

Does your family enjoy music and want to take advantage of fewer crowds? Then bring them down for the annual, 10 day Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival held every November. Venues all along the coast offer up a unique opportunity to see and hear songwriters perform the songs that became some of America’s biggest hits. Songwriters perform in restaurants, bars and hang-outs along the coast, so porta-potty festival this is not! Add to that little to no cover charge and you have the makings for a wonderful beach vacation full of Orange Beach, Alabama Concerts. What a great way to get the wiggles out before hunkering down for the winter.

No matter what your family enjoys, you’re sure to find something to please everyone. Don’t forget that there are also beautiful beaches, lots of shopping and restaurants to complete your vacation planning.

If you find yourself dreaming about snow and waiting for opening day at the mountain, then here’s a great place to check out. Sunriver, Oregon is at the heart of Central Oregon’s resort community and nature’s playground can be yours.

Playing in the snow makes me happy, and if you like it just a little bit, then this may be the ideal place for your next winter vacation. Yes, some people really do plan vacations to be where there is snow and sun at the same time. Not only is Oregon beautiful country, but there you’ll find snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding including cross country trials and all the shopping, restaurants and activities to fill the time in between.

Just so happens that just a short drive from Sunriver is one of North America’s largest ski resorts. Mt. Bachelor Resort is home to some 3700 acres of boarding and skiing fun. For a reasonable value snow nuts will enjoy some varied terrain that is sure to please all levels of competence. There are 71 groomed trails and 13 lift facilities with current plans to expand both lift operations and trails in the near future. Fifteen percent of the terrain is graded as Novice, 25% Intermediate and the other 60% is Advanced or Expert terrain. What a great place to bring the whole family for sun and ski! And did I happen to mention that on average the snow base is some 150-200 inches and that there’s 3,365 feet of vertical drop?

Feel like a totally new experience? How about a dog sled ride? Just imagine, riding in an Iditarod Dog Sled taking in the breathtaking views of the local mountain scenery. You could even plan for an overnight expedition. Sledding and snowtubing sound like fun too? Take some slides down the 800 foot ride in the Snowblast Tubing Park on the Mountain.

After all the fun, there are plenty of options for shopping or just hanging out. But dining in the area leaves nothing to be desired. There are many restaurants to choose from and something to satisfy the most discerning of palates. Or if you want to stay in the privacy of your vacation rental in Sunriver Oregon, you can find groceries and goodies in town.

Not only is the area good for winter fun, sounds like it may be just as amazing in the summer. Everything from biking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, golfing and so much more in the high desert of Oregon. Sounds like a great place for the next family vacation whether it’s summer or winter.

Don't pay for vacations that you can't take or that are ruined by the unexpected. Buy travel insurance, instead.

Whenever I book a trip, I always opt for the travel insurance. I can never predict what may happen and, without adequate protection, all of the money I have paid for airline tickets, rentals, excursions, lodging and the like can just be washed down the drain and there’s nothing I can do about it.

For a long vacation or a trip overseas, this can amount to a significant amount of money that you cannot afford to lose. Perhaps you’ve been saving for a year or more to pay for the trip. Even worse is when you put it on credit cards and have to pay it off (plus interest) anyway, without ever enjoying it.

Depending on the policy you choose, trip insurance generally runs about 5-10% of the trip cost. All kinds of policies are available that will cover you in all types of situations. Be certain to read and understand what you are being insured against and weigh whether that is appropriate in your circumstances. For example, if you are going to France, you may not need hurricane coverage, but it you are going to the Caribbean in September, that option is definitely worth paying.

In addition, you want to make certain you are insured against accidents and illnesses you may experience while abroad. Your regular medical insurance may not cover you, especially if you’re active and participate in sports where injuries are not uncommon.

I like to think about travel insurance as the way of insuring my vacation. If I get sick, if the mountain passes close due to snow and I can’t get to the airport, if there’s a family emergency I can’t ignore, or if any one of dozens of other unexpected things happens, I’m covered. I don’t lose the money I have invested and can take my trip at a later time. This gives me great piece of mind and makes the cost of the insurance very worthwhile.

It’s easy and convenient to purchase travel insurance online, so don’t go without it.

So I’ve never been to Florida but I think the ONE thing I want to see when I go is a Manatee. It just amazes me how huge and graceful they are. The video below is taken by one of the keepers at the Parker Manatee Aquarium in Bradenton, FL. Bradenton is located just across the bay from Anna Maria Island which I’ve heard offers great beaches and a nice retreat when compared to the more lively large cities of Bradenton and Sarasota.

Anna Maria Island is home to the Anna Maria Turtle Watch. Every spring and summer volunteers walk the beaches at sunrise to report nesting and hatching activity. Imagine seeing these little babies crawling to the sea every morning!

Your schedule miraculously clears for the upcoming 4 day weekend – what kind of fun can you plan? How about a last minute Caribbean vacation to the beautiful island of St. John? Yes – certain times of the year planning a last minute trip can prove to be difficult and expensive – but knowing where to go and who to ask can make planning an impromptu trip easy and exciting.

Take stock of what is available. Do you have some frequent flier miles you can cash in? Don’t forget about the voucher from that last trip you took and got bumped to a later flight because of the weather or an overbooking. Sometimes last minute trips become expensive because the airfare is outrageous. If you’re traveling in off season, last minute fares could save you money, the airlines will be looking to fill empty seats.

Where do you want to go? The U.S. Virgin Islands offer a great getaway without a lot of hassle. and best of all – you DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT! That’s right, if you visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, you don’t need to hassle with a passport. As of January 2007 about 73% of Americans did NOT have a passport.
You have four days, what do you want to do? A day on the beach is a must. What about some shopping or snorkeling? Do you like to golf or fish? Plan some time for laying in a hammock by the villa and getting some much deserved rest. Visit the island travel pages to plan some of the activities you’d like to try. Because you’re traveling last minute, it might be a good idea to call and be sure you can book a tee time or a trip with one of the deep sea fishing charter companies.

All in all – a last minute trip is within reach if you have realistic expectations and you prepare accordingly. Don’t expect the trip of a lifetime, you didn’t have time to plan all of the activities you’d have to try to make it unforgettable – but you can get a taste of life on St. John and enjoy yourself away from the rat-race for a few days.

Lincoln City

I was born on the Oregon Coast, and as a family we try to visit at least every two years. I don’t have any family left there, but I still get a thrill when we drive the last few miles into Lincoln City and catch our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. Although my family moved away when I was just 6 months old, every return feels like a homecoming of sorts. Of course, there are a few things we must do every visit – I would be heartbroken if we skipped them, and oh yeah, the kids would too!

Mo’s Restaurant is a MUST. I hate fish, never have liked it – but when we’re on vacation in Oregon, I eat it like crazy. Mo’s has the BEST clam chowder – and I don’t like clam chowder – at all! Yes there are a lot of tourists, and you usually have to wait in line, but I’ve never said “Ugh, I’m sick of this” and we eat there almost daily the 2 weeks we’re on the coast. Mo’s has locations in Florence, Otter Rock, Newport (2 locations), Lincoln City and Cannon Beach. You can also order their chowder base online, which we do every New Years. They ship it in dry ice via FedEx Overnight and it’s TOTALLY worth it!

Tillamook Cheese Factory is located in Tillamook, OR – about an hour’s drive north of Lincoln City. Beyond the beautiful scenery in every direction, Tillamook is kind of fun. There isnt much there, but the cheese factory is a really neat experience and they have a retail store when you’re done with the tour – the Ice Cream is TO DIE FOR!

Newport Aquarium is located South of Lincoln City – about a 1/2 hr drive – and was formerly the home of Keiko – the whale featured in the Free Willy movies. Keiko’s aquarium was renovated into a series of walk-through aquariums that feature awesome sharks and other amazing types of ocean life. There are also sea otter and marine bird exhibits – and you can spend a good 1/2 to 3/4 of a day here just wandering and taking photos.

Southern Oregon Coast Vacations

The Sea Lion Caves north of Florence is a cant-miss. This natural sea cavern is home to around 200 noisy Stellar Sea Lions. While visiting you can expect to see the sea lions in their natural habitat – gigantic bulls and even the young can be seen on the rocks below. The kids love this place!

Deep Sea Fishing is a must – for those that can handle the rocking of the ocean. If you get car sick or the thought of most amusement rides turns you green, deep sea fishing is NOT for you. My husband went once, and spent 6 miserable hours at sea…I had a blast. We always book through Tradewinds Charters out of Depoe Bay (about halfway between Lincoln City and Newport) which touts itself as the smallest harbor in the world. Tradewinds runs a fleet of over 10 boats and you can usually get a reservation at some point in time during your stay. The picture at the right is of the Sunrise and I’ve been out with Captain Craig twice. He’s great and we always catch fish. I always book ahead before we even leave home, to make sure I get a spot. The nice thing about having a spouse that is a poor sailor is there is always someone to watch the kids!

Some things to remember:

The coast is NOT tropical – the highs in July and August are around 70 degrees and you’ll need to pack accordingly. We always spend a few days in Bend before we head to the coast and the climate change from the desert of central/eastern Oregon to the coast is severe. Pack jeans and sweaters – leave your bathing suit at home if you plan on swimming in the ocean – it makes your feet hurt to just walk in it.

The coast IS a tourist destination – so you’ll have to deal with traffic & people – it’s not the quiet quaint getaway that someone visiting Mendocino, CA might expect – it’s teeming with people most days and this can pose frustrations – remember – you’re on vacation and you’re NOT punching a time clock – take your time and have fun!

New US passport regulations go into effect on January 23, 2007. In order to re-enter the United States by plane from Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean, US citizens will need a passport.

Those coming back into the country by sea and land may still use a driver’s license and birth certificate to prove their citizenship. However, that is expected to change in the near future.

Currently about 73% of all US citizens do not have passports, so this may cause a shift in travel patterns over the next few years. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands expect an influx of American vacationers, since they are the only Caribbean destinations not affected by the new rules.
