The Outer Banks of North Carolina allow for several types of fishing; pier fishing, surf fishing and of course charter fishing.  Fishing off of Outer Banks piers can result in catching Cobia, King Mackeral, Rock Fish and Speckled Trout.  The Nags Head pier produced the largest known King Mackeral to be caught off the pier at 58 1/2 lbs.

Surf fishing is great because you don’t need a boat, a pier or pay someone to take you out on a charter boat.  As long as you can access the beach you’re in.  In the Outer Banks, surf fishing produces Blue fish, Croaker and Flounder and they can be caught most anytime especially in the Spring and Fall. 

Charter fishing can be done most anywhere but the Outer Banks is special in that the Intercoastal Waterway runs close to the shore due to the Barrier Islands and that means big fish are always traveling up the coast in search of food.  Pretty much the same kind of fish can be caught offshore as you can catch off a pier with the exception of Albacore Tuna and some other deep water species.

The really fun part of catching all of these great tasting fish is to eat them.  One can have their catch fried, grilled, baked and blackened at one of the many seaside restaurants or one can visit a plethora of seafood markets with most having their own restaurant inside.  Lots of crab, clams and shrimp are to be expected.  What is really fun is to spend all day catching fish off of the pier and then having the Nags Head Pier Restaurant cook them up for you.  After eating, enjoy taking a long stroll on the pier and check out others trying to land a “Big One”.

If a beach vacation is on the horizon and fishing is expected to happen then plan a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the Nags Head area.

If you enjoy great music and amazing seascapes, this concert is not to be missed!  The festival takes place in a beautiful venue overlooking the Pacific, and is close to many of the area’s finest attractions.

Coming from out of town? But Yountsville, a small village in Napa Valley, is one of the area’s highlights. The town is known for its world-class restaurants and has earned the unofficial title of ‘Culinary Capital of the Napa Valley’. The fare includes French, Italian, and Pacific Rim with a multitude of fine dining and an unmatched surroundings in Yountville. Located within walking distance of the town’s luxurious hotels and inns, there is plenty of activities, shopping, and wineries to choose from.

There are several noteworthy inns from which to pick with central locations that will allow you a better opportunity to tour the valley. There are three wineries in town but customizing a wine tour is the way to go. With several hundred wineries in Napa Valley many are open to the public. When I go to a new place or destination, I take all things aside and open my mind to get the best first impression.  To me, being impressed usually involves imbibing in local cuisine and drink especially when I’m on a beach.

From serving swordfish and seabass to snapper, mahi-mahi and ahi, local eateries in Playa del Rey are known for their fresh catches of the day.  If you are looking for a down-to-earth kind of place and are seeking good-old comfort food; burgers, like the 2 lb. Desperado, to Alaskan King Crab and Calamari Steak are served typically with ice-cold draft beer or whatever you are thirsty for.  These are just a couple of examples of dining and places to go after a day spent on the beach.

Newport offers a little something for everyone, from exhilarating nautical excursions to leisurely strolls through famous mansions and vineyards.  For those who enjoy early American history, Newport is not to be missed.  Beautiful New England scenery provides a dramatic backdrop for the amazing architecture of the gilded age.  Stroll through homes that were built by Vanderbilts and Astors, check out some of the historic forts and museums, or spend a day relaxing at the spa.  You’re sure to be taken with the rich history of the area.

Now that the snow has thawed, Colorado locals are hanging up their skis and dusting off their summer gear to enjoy the beauty, adventure, and fun that the state has to offer during the summer months.  A favorite activity of both locals and visitors alike, is taking a step back into Colorado’s wild past.  Visiting historic landmarks and vacationing at dude ranches are two of the most popular ways to do this.  Colorado has a rich and colorful history, take a step into any mountain town, and you’ll see the signs of an era long gone.  Bars owned by men like Doc Holliday that still have bullets lodged in the cieling, historic homes, abandoned mines are abundant throughout the mountain region.

Another fun way to get a taste of old Colorado is to take part in one of the state’s dude ranch vacations.  The state is home to over 30 guest ranches, varying in size and number of amenities.  Some of our favorites even feature spa services to enjoy after a long day on the trail!  (Okay, maybe not completely authentic, but ranching is hard work!)  Most ranches provide amazing accommodations, three meals a day, and a variety of ranching activities to enjoy.  These trips are an excellent way to get the whole family engaged in the vacation experience, with something for everyone.  You can participate in ranch activities at your leisure, so you still have time to take in the amazing scenery or go play in the river for an afternoon or two.

Attractions/Activities:

Today, Denton combines the old with the new in terms of attractions and lifestyle.  A town’s courthouse is a good place to start.  Check out Denton’s Courthouse on the Square Museum to learn about the beginnings of this Texas town.  Denton’s Main Street is full of history with old antique shops, restaurants, live music and horse-drawn carriages to casually take you through Denton’s core.

Denton is home to UNT (University of North Texas) and the awe-inspiring  Sky Theater.  Take a seat in the 100 person auditorium with a 40 ft. domed roof and watch the night sky come to life during the day.  The Sky Theater is perfect for kids of all ages both young and old.  See shows such as “Dawn of the Space Age”, “Solar System Tour” and ”Trip to the Moon”.  I know that when I was a kid my summers were filled with these kinds of activities.

The Trinity River runs through the whole state of Texas  and creates a border for Denton County.  This river provides recreation for the locals and tourists during those warm Texas summers.  Rent a kayak and float down the river to experience the North Texas countryside.

With Dallas/Ft. Worth nearby, the Texas Motor Speedway is always a destination for locals and tourists alike.  Races, car shows and car club events all take place here and pretty much every day.

Dining/Lodging:

When thinking of Texas, barbeque usually comes to mind but in Denton that’s not the case.  Enjoy some eclectic cuisine right off the square of downtown Denton.  From Thai Curry Mussels to Rosemary Smoked Duck, Hannah’s really gives the hungry soul something to chew on culturally.

Texas dining is just not the same without Tex Mex and Denton pulls through with just that…  El Matador brings Mexico right to your plate with saucy Enchiladas and delicious Chile Rellenos not to mention the frozen Margaritas and Dacquiris.

After dining out in Denton, one will need a place to lay their head.  Being that the town has history of the wild Texas frontier, lodging can be found that’s not primitive nor rustic by any means.  A Denton bed and breakfast might just be right up your alley offering high-end fare equalled with cozy accommodations. 

Whatever your expectation of North Texas might be, keep an open mind when visiting the little town of Denton and be ready to experience life inside as well as outside Texas borders.

Belfast Maine was recently voted one of Budget Travel’s coolest small towns in 2008.  We decided to take a look at how they chose this beautiful coastal town as one of their faves.

While I have not yet had the luxury of visiting Maine, it is on my list of places to see, especially during the fall foliage color change.  Maine offers a charm that is unique to New England, with its famously beautiful landscape, legendary lobster feasts, and a culture all its own.  As I’ve been daydreaming about a visit to this beautiful locale on Penobscot Bay in the near future, I thought I’d share some of my research with you.

What Should I Do? Experience some of Belfast’s old world charm. Wander around the village and explore the old buildings, shops, and galleries.  Throughout the summer season, the town hosts numerous festivals.  Check out the Museum In The Streets, a self-guided walking tour that will lead you through some of Belfast’s historic highlights.

What Should I Eat? Your number one culinary priority while visiting Belfast should be to experience some of the area’s world-famous lobster!  In addition to lobster, be sure to experience the native clams, fish, shrimp, scallops, and more.  Trip Advisor rates Young’s Lobster Pound as their number one restaurant in Belfast.

Where Should I Sleep? If you’re looking for an authentic New England experience, a charming Maine Bed and Breakfast is the way to go!  The area has a variety of lodging options, most of which are inns and B&B’s.  Belfast just is not the kind of town where a large chain hotel fits in.

In recent years past I have spent some time living in Scottsdale, Arizona so I could drive a short distance (an hour maybe) north to Sedona and hang-out there for the weekend hiking, biking, exploring the local vortexes and enjoying great Southwestern cuisine.  Even though Scottsdale, therefore Phoenix, get pretty warm (120 degrees) during the summer, the temperature up in Sedona would be quite reasonable.  The buttes, mesas and spires seem to keep a nice breeze rushing through Sedona’s network of mazes.

Taking a tour of the local vortexes is a must in my opinion.  There are four vortexes strewn in and around Sedona proper.  They are energy fields that shoot up out of the earth’s core and some believe they hold positive vibes that create balance in one’s life.  You can easily take yourself on a tour of these mysterious vortexes by getting a free local map.  This vortex map is the same one I used over 10 years ago!  Notice these locals (in the photo above) probably doing some kind of “stick fighting-martial arts” exercise at a vortex.  I saw them while on a bike ride one afternoon so I had to take a picture.  Whether you believe in these energy fields or not doesn’t matter because the hiking you do to get to them is more than half the fun.

Mountain biking in Sedona is fun and quite technical depending on the trail you’re on.  If you have ever ridden the slick-rock trails in Moab, Utah then you will need some of those riding tricks if you choose to do some of the more difficult trails in Sedona.  There are several bike shops in town that will help you with information, bike rentals and gear.  Check it out — that’s me 13 years ago riding one of the local trails and the shape I used to be in…

Make sure you go to Tlaquepaque, Sedona’s arts and craft community with shops featuring local talent and restaurants serving great Southwest cuisine (even rattlesnake! - been there, done that) and to me it did taste like chicken!  Give it a try sometime.  This picture on the right is one that I took of some pretty interesting art/nature expression while on a bike ride as well.  Please enjoy!

If you ever get a chance to go to the Southwest try to make tracks over to the canyon country of Sedona.  This Red Rock Country really does come to life right before your very own eyes.

Stretching from Cape Fear, NC to Georgetown, SC - the Grand Strand features a wide variety of attractions, activities and historic sites - there’s something for everyone.

The towns that lie within the Grand Strand zone have long and colorful histories, and are great places to visit while using your Myrtle Beach vacation rental as your home base.

Murrels Inlet

A historic low-country rice growing community, Murrells Inlet is now the Seafood Capital of South Carolina.  This is reason enough for me to want to visit.  Located just 15 miles south of Myrtle Beach its a quick trip for lunch and a walk through Huntington Beach State Park.

Surfside Beach

Six miles north of Murrels Inlet and 9 miles south of Myrtle Beach lies the quiet community of Surfside Beach, SC.  While you’re there - check out the Surfside Pier, originally built in 1953 it has been rebuilt 3 times due to hurricane damage - most recently in 1993.  You can rent a pole and try your luck for some of the native species in the area such as Amberjack, Cobia, Flounder and Black Drum.

Myrtle Beach

This mecca for beachgoers offers something for everyone.  There are over 100 golf courses in the near vicinity and the piers, restaurants and beach combing is unparalleled.  A friend told me about “Broadway At The Beach” which is over 350 acres of dining, shopping and attractions.  This place is HUGE!  From a water park to an Imax theatre - this complex will offer you something to keep the young and old happy.

If you’re into musical theatre – then I hear Playhouse Square is the place to visit. They have amazingly eclective performances available from the Laurie Berkner band (one of my kids’ faves) to Hal Holbrook playing Mark Twain! I had no idea!

The one thing I KNEW about Cleveland was that it is home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – a must visit for any music lover. There are exhibits from the past and present of rock & roll – and at present you can visit a Motown exhibit and a “Right Here Right Now” exhibit that features up and comers –such as My Chemical Romance and Paramore.

So where do I eat if I’m going to do the whole “Cleveland Experience” thing. I plugged the details into UrbanSpoon.com and the neighborhoods alone were pretty diverse. I chose the Rock & Roll Hall of fame as my home base and the “Best Restaurant” was the Key West Café – which actually sounds like my kind of place. Top 5 restaurants near the Hall of fame that I’d try were:

1. Key West Café
2. Freddie’s Southern-Style Rib House (is Cleveland considered the “south”?)
3. One Walnut
4. Barrister’s Deli
5. Captain Tony’s Pizza (I eat pizza in every city I visit – have to try the regional specialties)

So food is diverse and looks great – check

Entertainment is great for my theatre-lovin’ heart

Where do I stay? There are a few different choices – and the downtown area is full of the chain hotels that cater to business travelers and visitors to the big attractions. You could step a few miles away from the action and try somewhere like the Glidden House. This hotel is just a few miles away from lots of things to do in Cleveland, but looks elegant and inviting – without the stress and pace of being where everyone else is at the same time.

Overall I think I might have to try a bit harder to make it to that conference – Cleveland looks like a fun place to visit – even by myself. There’s a ton to do and see and some great food to be found.

Heart of the Arts
The area has become the heart of the arts for Atlanta, with the Woodruff Arts Center, which includes the High Museum of Art, the 14th Street Playhouse and is home to the Atlanta Symphony.

The historic 1920’s era Fox Theatre has been amazingly restored to its over the top opulence. Behind the scenes tours are available. They also offer a diverse mix of entertainment throughout the year and their ballrooms are a popular venue for weddings, banquets and other fancy celebrations.

Dining and Nightlife
Midtown Atlanta is the center of the city’s vibrant gay culture and the place to go for dining, entertainment and nightlife. Fat Matt’s Rib Shack is the place to go for lip smacking barbeque and live blues bands playing nearly every night. It’s always a nice touch when you can get great food and great music at the same time.

Center Stage is a rather small venue with half moon stadium seating where big rock and pop acts play. The concerts here have an intimate feel and every seat has a great view of the action on stage.

For a taste of fine dining southern style, try the Dogwood Restaurant. Fancy grits du jour, fried oysters, downhome cornbread,  sweet corn soufflé and other familiar (or strange depending on where you’re from) delicacies grace the menu.

The Midtown Mile
Fourteen blocks of Peachtree Street between North Avenue and 15th Street have transformed into The Midtown Mile. It’s a cosmopolitan shopping district teeming with upscale shops, quirky boutiques and plenty of restaurants on the ground level of the high rise office buildings that line the street.

Going to the beach for a family vacation just seems to be much more effortless than say going to New York perhaps…  While the kids are playing in the sand and burying dad on the beach mom can go shopping, hit the salon or day spa, check out the local art galleries or go catch a movie in the laid back town of Gulf Shores, Alabama.  Of course mom could be getting buried right next to dad if we were talking about my family J.

If everybody is getting tired of the salty Gulf, there’s Waterville USA to visit.  This park has amusement rides as well as water slides, a wave pool and the new Flowrider which is a wave pool where one can surf the “endless” wave.  The park has two seasons of which either both the water park and the amusement park are open (summer) or only the amusement park is open (spring and fall time).  Waterville USA is great way to spend a day individually or with a large group.   

Another fun way to spend a day “away” from the beach is to visit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.  Located just blocks away from the Gulf and home to almost 300 animals, the zoo is a place to visit for all ages.  Check the website frequently for upcoming events and activities.  The zoo offers a “Zoo Camp” where kids from 3 to 11 get to spend a full day learning about the zoo and what it takes to keep the doors open to the public. 

If you are thinking of going to the zoo then you might as well head on over to Alligator Alley in Summerdale, Alabama which is only 30 minutes away from Gulf Shores.  This gator farm is home to “Captain Crunch” who is over 13 feet long, weighs over 800 pounds and holds the record for the world’s strongest bite.  Now that must something to see…  Other marsh and estuary wild life can be observed like owls and turtles while you are keeping your eyes peeled for the alligator(s).

Doing all of these fun activities will make the vacationing family sleep well at night.  Gulf Shores, Alabama really does accommodate and cater to the needs of families who choose to spend quality time and an adventurous time on their vacation.  Looking for a Gulf vacation destination that brings young and old together?  Give Gulf Shores, Alabama a try on your next trip down South.

Just one look at the fantastically wind and water sculpted shapes of Goblin Valley in south central Utah explains how it got it’s name, but as you approach, you only see the rocks sticking up above the landscape and not the very weird valley hidden below them. In fact, it’s so well hidden that it wasn’t discovered until 3 cowboys stumbled upon it while looking for their cattle.

You’ll find Goblin Valley State Park 6-7 miles west of the road between Green River and Hanksville, Utah, 30 miles south of I-70 Exit 149 on the way to Lake Powell. Just look for the signs. There’s a small, but nice improved campground, with drinking water and modern rest rooms with hot showers. The best sites are hidden in coves among the rocks. The road leading to the park is paved, so it’s no trouble getting there.

There’s a visitor’s center, 3 marked trails and free Ranger-led interpretive programs, but the true thrill is being able to wander through the rock formations at will, exploring the maze of thousands of grotesque sandstone creatures and climbing over, around and even through them. Because it’s literally in the middle of nowhere, you’ll see skies crowded with stars. A full moon walk among the hoodoos is an experience you’ll never forget.

While mountain biking, dirt biking and ATV riding is not permitted within the park itself, the surrounding area offers hundreds of miles of good dirt trails for these activities. The summer sun is relentless in the high desert, so Autumn is without a doubt the best time to visit.

If you’re a distance runner, check out the Goblin Valley Ultra Marathon held each year in late October. It could just be the most breathtaking race you’ve ever run.

Non-campers can stay in Green River, Utah,  about a 45 minute drive from the park. You won’t find anything fancy or charming there, but the Robbers Roost is a clean and friendly place to spend the night.

• Washington is a nightmare to navigate in a car. There’s a street grid overlaid by circles with multiple diagonal roads radiating out from them. Even those familiar with the city can have a hard time getting from point A to point B because of all the odd streets, confusing intersections and one way traffic signs. When I lived in the Watergate neighbor, I knew one way in and out of town and if anything happened to detour me from that route, I quickly became lost. Sadly, I lived there for over a year and my navigation never improved.
• Parking, when possible, is expensive.
• The 2 airports in the area, Dulles International and Regan National are not convenient to the city center. In fact, Dulles is way out in Virginia and a cab ride from the airport into the city is pretty darn expensive.
• The Capital Beltway, aka I-495, encircles the District of Columbia through Northern Virginia and Maryland. It’s usually quickest to go around the city on the Beltway to line up with where you want to be before trying to join the congestion on the main arteries leading in and out of the District.
• The Metrorail, Washington’s train/subway system is quick, efficient and not at all scary. There are stations throughout the outlying metropolitan areas that make it a very pleasant and practical alternative to driving.

Many hotels have free shuttles to and from the airports and Metro stations. So, my recommendation for Washington DC lodging is to find a reasonably-priced hotel in a convenient location near the Metro and/or the Beltway and make that your headquarters when traveling to the Nation’s Capital. You’ll enjoy your trip much more if you leave the driving to someone else.

The cities of Yorktown, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk and Newport News soon grew up around the deep, ice free natural harbor centrally located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. This crossroads of history is where General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown, ending the American Revolution.

The first naval battle of the War of 1812 between the British Empire and our new nation was fought in Hampton Roads. Several forts were built in the ensuing era to defend this strategic harbor. The region was hotly contested during the Civil War and was the site of the infamous battle between the warships the Monitor and the Merrimac. In late 1862, Hampton Roads fell to Union forces and became a staging area for several important campaigns aimed at taking the Confederate Capital at Richmond.

Today, this region encompasses nearly 30 miles of some of the nicest ocean beaches on the Atlantic seaboard.  It’s also home to renowned theme parks, wineries, museums and galleries. When you combine these with the intriguing historical attractions and the allure of the sand and surf, you have a vacation the entire family will long remember.

Located 95 miles south of Los Angeles and 25 miles north of San Diego is Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California.  This beach community was named back in 1911 by a developer and remains a community which prides in its’ “walkability” factor of everything you would need being walking distance from each other via the beach.  Nestled amongst the community is the San Elijo Lagoon which is one of San Diego’s largest coastal wetlands still to exist.

Over 90% of California’s wetlands have vanished and are gone forever due to ever increasing development.  The San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy is working hard to involve the local community in its’ ecological efforts of protecting the diminishing wildlife and their habitat.  The lagoon consists of over 1,000 acres, 7.5 miles of trails and 700 various species of animals and plants.  One can enjoy free guided nature walks, take part in a volunteer work party or participate in a bird count exercise. 

When you are done checking out the San Elijo Lagoon, the waves of the Pacific Ocean are crashing nearby and begging you to visit.  Cardiff-by-the-Sea enjoys 2.6 miles of pristine ocean beach with shops, restaurants and lodging all within walking distance.  One can find a Southern California Bed & Breakfast that is local and quaint just by walking down the beach.  Cardiff Reef has some of the best breaks around if you are into surfing.  From amateurs to professionals, Cardiff Reef attracts surfers from all over Southern California. 

Whether you are into being low-key on your vacation to Cardiff or you need to change it up sometimes with San Diego nearby, Cardiff-by-the-Sea will at least provide a moderate climate with breathtaking views.

Developed as a planned suburb of Norfolk in the1890’s, its expanded trolley car routes, new bridges and modern city utility systems all attracted upper middle class families to build stately homes with lush lawns. The  European-styled buildings set on large lots along wide, tree-lined boulevards in an appealing waterfront location made it the favored place for lawyers, doctors, businessmen and the civic leaders of the day to live.

Ghent was-and still is-primarily a residential neighborhood. Although it deteriorated into a general state of disrepair after World War II, it has been revived, renewed and rehabilitated and has regained much of its previous character. It’s now a thriving community that’s pedestrian friendly and packed full of a diverse mix of revitalized homes, shops, restaurants and cultural experiences.

Lodging
The elegantly restored Page House Inn is an historic Norfolk Bed and Breakfast at 323 Fairfax Avenue smack in the middle of Ghent, making it a stylish home base for exploring and enjoying the neighborhood.

Shopping
Mystic Mermaid, in the popular Palace Shops on West 21st Street, is one of those funky little stores that you never want to leave. There’s something new and intriguing in every nook and cranny, including lots and lots of mermaids.

Quick Eats
Baker’s Crust on West 21st Street is perfect for grabbing a fast breakfast of fresh pastries and gourmet coffee, a specialty omelet for brunch or a juicy burger or healthy sandwich on fresh baked bread for lunch.

Culture
Chrysler Museum of Art at 245 West Olney Road is home to an extensive collection of world-renowned art. Their exhibitions are often wind history and current affairs together in a very interesting way. Stroll their beautiful grounds along the water for some peaceful realxation.

Fine Dining
Try The Painted Lady Tea Room on East 17th Street for a taste of old Ghent. The setting will take you back to Victorian times and the food is some of the most raved about in Norfolk. Don’t let the outside of the building scare you away-it’s very pink!

Nightlife
The Tap House Grill is a neighborhood brew pub known throughout the Hampton Roads area as one of the absolutely best places in Norfolk to see live bands and down chilled house microbrews. It’s friendly, inviting and fun.’

I remember reading Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire in high school and imagining the Great Southwest to be a vast land of rock and caves where the ancient Anasazi Indians made their lives as cliff dwellers going in and out of our world through their time machines known as kivas. 

Ten years ago I, personally, made the move from out east to Colorado and have since thoroughly enjoyed exploring Colorado’s southwest corner and Utah’s canyonland areas where Mr. Abby spent some time learning and writing about that rugged and ancient terrain.

Just outside of Dolores, Colorado you will find The Anasazi Heritage Center where guests can see, touch and learn about the Four Corners “prehistory” era.  There are roughly 3 million records and artifacts that make up the Center’s attractions.

The Anasazi Heritage Center also represents the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.  Here you will find a pre-Puebloan culture that dates back to at least 10,000 years.  Evidence of their villages still remains for visitors to see.  The Canyons of the Ancients is a vast land protected by the BLM and is open for exploration but one must be very careful and respect these ancestral ruins.  Leave no trace as they say and “they” (Bureau of Land Management) mean it.

Mesa Verde country consists of just about every type of terrain so that all kinds of recreation can exist.  Everything that can be done outdoors, even skiing, can be done in Mesa Verde country.  To me, the best way to experience and explore this country is on foot and since we are talking about the desert that means lots of sun and heat in the summer.  Use common sense and hike during the morning or dusk hours and not during the middle of the day when the sun is at its’ highest.  One can find camping in designated areas to really get the feel of day turning into night.

So, if you ever find yourself traveling from Denver going west and if you have a couple of days to spare consider the Mesa Verde Country in southwest Colorado.  Experience a beautiful and ancient land which is home of the modern day Pueblo People, descendants of the Ancient Anasazi Indians.

What better way to see the beautiful island of Kauai than by air, sea and land.  I imagine that they are all spectacular in their own way.  Helicopter and airplane tours, sea kayaking and boat tours and biking Kauai are just some of the ways to see this amazing island. 

Taking a helicopter or airplane ride can let you experience the beauty of Kauai without lifting a finger or making a step in the rugged terrain.  Air Kauai Helicopter Tours flies over 10 hot spots on their daily tours.  They offer a deluxe 1-Hour Tour that takes you all over the island highlighting the Waimea Canyon which is known as the “Grand Canyon” of the Pacific and Mt. Wai’ ale’ ale Crater which is actually the wettest place on Earth averaging 420 inches a year!  The famed NaPali Coast and the Jurassic Park Falls are also part of the tour.

Seeing Kauai from a boat or kayak is also a wonderful way to see the hugeness of Kauai’s coastline.  Kauai Sea Tours offers catamaran as well as zodiac boat tours.  The guides are educated on the local wildlife, marine life, conservation and history so that you get a full view of Kauai’s environment and existence.  One can go snorkeling, whale watching and enjoy sunset cruises along the NaPali coast with Kauai Sea Tours.

Discovering Kauai on a bike allows one to be up close and personal with the island and its’ environment.  You can pretty much ride on flat roads around the island or choose to mountain bike easy, moderate or steep terrain.  Coconut Coasters is a bike rental company that specializes in biking from Baby Beach to Kealia Beach on what is known as the Coconut Coast.  You can rent a classic cruiser with tandem bike attachments or kid carriers so that the whole family can enjoy the ride.

All of these activities can be done while staying at a number of places on the island.  Whether it’s a luxury vacation rental on the Poipu coast that you are seeking or a rustic inland villa off the beaten path Kauai enjoys less people and more of Mother Nature.

So, the next time you are planning to go to the Hawaiian Islands, try to make time to get to Kauai where the Grand Canyon meets the Pacific.

These days everybody knows the term “green” means having a conscious mind to recycle, reuse and clean up our environment.  We as residents of this earth need to do our part to ensure a lasting relationship between us and Mother Nature.  I tend to look at businesses around me to see if they are doing their part since a lot of waste comes from today’s commercialism.

When I think of Boulder, Colorado, I think of technology, quality of life and an amazing effort to becoming and maintaining a “green” and eco-friendly lifestyle.  As a Coloradoan, I definitely have found myself adopting a regimented recycle program to do my part for my family and everyone around me.  I would like to expose some of the green efforts currently going on in Boulder.

City of Boulder Green Points Program

This program outlines and enforces issues on home energy, construction waste recycling, deconstruction plans and new construction for additions and remodels.  Boulder building codes are now strictly following green standards and sustainable development practices.        

For recycling construction waste, new construction sites must donate, reuse or recycle 50% of all the waste material generated.  Being energy efficient in reducing the amount of energy used and carbon emissions is the city’s green goal.  By simply using energy efficient light bulbs, one can reduce about 75% of the energy normally used up in incandescent bulbs and the efficient light bulbs last generally 10 times longer with a $30 plus savings in electricity costs over time.

Boulder Recycling Program

Waste management companies are providing more simple ways to commingle your recyclables from your trash.  Just knowing some tiny details about what is accepted and what is not adds up when you are talking about just under 100,000 people living inside the city limits.  2008 was called “The Year of Zero Waste” and I’m sure that mantra will continue for years to come until zero waste is achieved.

Boulder Local Businesses

I see a little bit of green consciousness going on around me with the local businesses and that’s uplifting.  Hotels are one type of business that being green can be very beneficial.  A hotel can become a green hotel in a multitude of ways.  Recycling, donating, reusing and eliminating waste can all be done with little effort.  Old linens are used for rags and items that cannot be reused are donated to homeless shelters and local charities.  Leftover banquet food is donated to the Boulder Community Food Share Program.  Habitat for Humanity and regional Indian Reservations also benefit from donations.  Using environmentally friendly products such as biodegradable solvents and non toxic cleaners make a positive impact as a whole.  Saving energy and water can be done by simply setting thermostats at a median temperature and using low water toilets use less water as a result.

Let’s encourage each other as well as local businesses to embrace green standards and practices this new year.  If you make an honest effort, a positive impact can result for all to see and experience all around the world.

In addition, Fisherman Wharf has become a magnet for tourists, many of whom ride the cable car from Union Square to its turnaround spot on Hyde St. There are 27 interesting and informative historical markers along the waterfront, telling about such things as the fisherwomen of San Francisco and how skippers choose a name for their boat.

The Wharf neighborhood is full of the tacky souvenir and tee shirt shops that out-of-towners crave. You can see sea lions basking in the fog on Pier 39 and take boat tours of the Bay, but for me main attraction is the very fresh seafood.

Like the fishing boats, many of the restaurants and outdoor stands have been in the same family for generations. The selections range from the traditional Dungeness c

rab boiled in large pots outdoors to zesty Crab Cioppino served in open dockside taverns to delectable filet of sole served in elegant surroundings overlooking the Bay.

Whichever you choose to indulge in, you can’t go too wrong, but I tend to prefer grazing on tasty tidbits in the outdoor stalls. The enormous shrimp salad sandwiches on sourdough rolls are my absolute favorite.

I recently just got back from the Big Easy ~ New Orleans and I of course imbibed in my usual gluttony of seafood.  Oysters on the half shell, charbroiled, fried and stuffed inside a Po-Boy, etc…  I tend to indulge in oysters way down south just because I cannot get them at home.

Well, not too far (about 3 hours east) from New Orleans is Gulf Shores, Alabama.  Also known for celebrating the upcoming Mardi Gras festival, Gulf Shores shares in the fun and food that is locally harvested from the Gulf of Mexico.  Dixieland as many call the deep south offers fun in the sun for all ages.

Gulf Shores is home to the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival or also known as The Annual National Shrimp Festival.  Held every fall in October over 200,000 shrimp obsessed people come to Gulf Shores to take part in the festivities which all revolve around the yummy crustacean; the shrimp.  With shrimp being prepared in a multitude of ways, festival goers get 4 days of free admission to get their fill.

Music is also an important part of the festival and there are two back to back stages offering country and rock every day starting at 10 am.  With names of musical acts like “Liquid Chicken”, “Catfish Flats” and “Bid Muddy”, you cannot go wrong listening to music outside, eating shrimp and of course, washing it all down with some cold beers.

I know that most people think of seafood as being fried most of the time but in Gulf Shores there are options.  Gulf Shores Steamer & Grill stands behind their motto of “NO FRIED” and serves up delicious steamed shrimp, snow crab legs, oysters and mussels.

Another cool eatery is known as “The Hangout” where locals would come in the late 50’s and early 60’s to enjoy the beach scene and be with friends surfing and just hanging out.  These days one can still come to “The Hangout” and enjoy great Gulf Shores’ seafood and cuisine.  From raw oysters and catfish to crab and corn “chowda” one can easily quench their seafood appetite in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

So, remember Gulf Shores in planning your next Southern beach excursion where the locals like to eat, listen to live music and eat some more.

Bazillions of people zoom by this spot as they pass through Glenwood Canyon on Interstate 70 across the Colorado Mountains and most never think about stopping here. Those who find a couple of hours to spare in their journey and have the energy to take a steep, but short hike up Dead Horse Creek, are rewarded with one of those surprisingly scenic gems that hide in the forest-Hanging Lake.

It’s only a little over a mile to this small, crystal clear emerald lake fed by a restful waterfall. It’s a tough mile, though, starting off with rock stairs, climbing relentlessly, crossing across the creek and requiring a rock scramble close to the top. However, every time you feel yourself about to turn back, just ask someone coming down the trail if it was worth it. The answer is always a resounding yes.

Tips:

• Because of the narrowness of the canyon in this spot, you must enter coming from the west. For those coming from the east, the turnaround is at Grizzly Creek.
• If you have any leg power left after reaching the lake, take the very short add-on hike to spouting rock.
• Take your camera, plenty of water and a snack with you.
• The snow is slow to melt in this deep canyon.

• Dogs are not allowed.

Tourists come to board the trolley that takes them to Fisherman’s Wharf. Shoppers are in heaven, with hundreds of name brand stores jammed together within a few square blocks. Locals come for the open space that swings between lively and peaceful, depending upon the time of day, eating lunch, meeting friends and enjoying the free entertainment taking place on the stage. Great restaurants are everywhere, including some that are hidden away down narrow alleys.

Union Square is just a few blocks from San Francisco’s famous Chinatown. A 20-30 minute walk through Chinatown will take you to the North Beach neighborhood for an authentic Italian meal in a lively sidewalk café. Another 20-30 minutes and you’ll be at Fisherman’s Wharf. Take a cab or stroll back through North Beach, stopping wherever suits you on the way for a drink or snack or shopping.

There are several historic boutique hotels, notably The Handley and the Sir Francis Drake, to choose from with a block or two of the Square, as well as a few upscale chains like Marriot and Westin. Shop around-you can usually find a good deal at one of them. If you want to be near the center of the action in San Francisco, then book a room near Union Square, put on your walking shoes and start enjoying the City by the Bay.

For a few weeks after the Spring rains, when the nights are still cool and the days are welcomingly warm, but not yet hot, you can see the high desert come alive with color. Although my timing isn’t always right, when it is, the display is spectacular. Not in the enormous fields of sunflowers way you see in the midwest, but in a cactus blooming out of a rock or bright blooms growing on what looks like sticks in the sand way.

If you’re a nature lover, but have never been to the desert in the Spring, start planning a trip now. You’ll be amazed at what is hidden there.

Since LA is so close one can enjoy the entertainment value of Hollywood’s Universal Studios, Hollywood Walk of Fame and Mann’s Chinese Theatre.  Of the 18 boutique Mann Theatres located in the greater LA area, the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is the most famous opening its’ doors in 1927 to show movies on the big screen for the people.  The opening of Grauman’s Theatre sparked the beginning of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame where famous movie stars are denoted as to have “made it” in show biz.

Dining options in Redondo Beach are varied and very good!  One must check out the Redondo Beach Pier and Fisherman’s Wharf when visiting this beach town.  Old Tony’s is a must when dining on the pier.  Ranging from shrimp, oysters and calamari for appetizers and sea bass, scallops, halibut, lobster, mahi mahi and shark for dinner, one can get their fill of fresh seafood from Old Tony’s.  Another landmark for the pier is Polly’s on the Pier which serves a hearty breakfast and lunch and with seating outside one can see the fresh catch coming into harbor.  Bluewater Grill is just another great example of California seafood dining.  Located right on the water, Bluewater Grill serves up charbroiled seafood, chowders and pastas and has an oyster bar.  In operation for over 7 years now, they have an impressive 100 + item menu of which they print out twice a day to reflect new and fresh seafood coming that day.

Hangin’ on the beach is probably the most favorite activity in Redondo Beach.  When visitors come to Redondo Beach they can stay in lodging very close to the beach.  Other beaches close to Redondo are Hermosa, Manhattan, and Venice Beach.  Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches are only 10 to 15 minutes away while Venice Beach is more like a 30 minute drive.  From surfing and boogie boarding to biking on the paved trails and fishing, the beach is alive and well with the people that call Southern California home.

One of the most popular short day hikes for Aspen area locals is a trip to the Grottos. Head up Independence Pass east of town on Highway 82 and look for a Forest Service sign on the right side of the road. Leave your car or bike in the small parking area and start exploring.

I’m not going to give away any of our secrets about this place, but if you spend a little time there, you’ll easily discover for yourself the quiet rocks to sun yourself on, the ice caves deep in the crevices and the shallow parts of the Roaring Fork River where you can cool off from the summer heat.

The one thing no one misses are the cascading falls of the river, which invite you to scramble around on the rounded rocks. Be careful, though. The rocks are definitely slippery when wet, the ice cold pools have treacherous currents and it seems like some unsuspecting person dies here every year or so.

The Bells, as the locals call them, of course, are most spectacular in autumn when the aspens turn gold and a skiff of snow highlights their cliffs and ridges. During the Fall color weekend in Colorado, photographers come from all across the globe to get THE definitive picture. Lucky for the rest of us that nearly any photo we take of these famous mountains is spectacular.

Take a short drive from town to Aspen Highlands on Maroon Creek Road. Then, catch a public bus for $10 which will take you up to Maroon Lake, where you can hike, fish, take pictures or simply stand in awe of the natural elements that surround you. Even the most out of shape city people can enjoy this jaunt, so put this one on your bucket list!

Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to visit all of the State Beaches in California-there are 63 of them at last count. However, I’ve been very impressed with those along the central California coast between San Francisco and Monterrey.

If you take this incredibly scenic drive on Route 1, you’ll enjoy an have the chance to stop at numerous state beaches along the way. My favorites were both rugged and lonesome, even during the dog days of August, and the only company were flocks of shore birds and frolicking sea lions.

Others attracted surfers or surf fisherfolk and at one was chocked full of families camping in their RVs not 100 feet across the sand from the Pacific ocean. So, as you can see, there’s a beach to suit anyone’s taste along this stretch.

Now, I’m anxiously awaiting my next trip to the coast so that I can explore some of the more than 50 others I missed.

No visit to Santa Cruz, California is complete without a stroll down the boardwalk with soft serve ice cream or cotton candy or some other nutritionally outlawed yummy that you’d never eat anywhere else. But, hey, how often do you get here? Live it up!

They have some great free shows on the beach stage. This summer (2008), it was the Amazing Chinese Acrobats performing at least a couple of times a day, occasional visits by skydivers landing on the beach and thrilling high divers plunging from an 80 foot tower.

On Friday evenings during the summer, they have free concerts on the beach with lovable old timers, like Herman’s Hermits and Blue Oyster Cult, and more modern groups, like the Gin Blossoms. Other special events include fireworks, local’s nights, kite festivals and beach soccer tournaments.

Many of the rides are kid-sized versions, which is awesome, especially when they allow adults to accompany the really little ones.

The Santa Cruz Boardwalk is one of the last great seaside amusement parks and is designated as a California Historic Landmark. Two of the nostalgic rides, a wooden roller coaster built in 1924 and a classic 1911 carousel, are National Historic Landmarks. So, consider a visit here as an educational field trip and let the fun begin!

I had so much fun on the boardwalk, that I never even made it down onto the beach, but maybe that’s a good thing, since it looks like there’s no fun allowed.

One must check out the Blue Man Group and attend a show to experience the vivid colors and wild imagination of the three blue guys that put together an awesome performance.  These guys have a GRAMMY nomination they are so talented.  They go all over the world to perform their wild and lavish acts.  The show is recommended for kids age 3 and up so the whole family can enjoy a night out seeing the Blue Man Group.

The Magic Kingdom at Disney World was my favorite amusement park to visit some 20 years ago.  The Mad Tea Party and Space Mountain are some of the older rides at Magic Kingdom whereas now, kids have Pirates of the Caribbean and Monsters Inc. rides and attractions.  One can find lodging inside and outside the park so there are plenty of options.  If one prefers renting a vacation home over staying in a hotel room that can easily be arranged.  Lodging packages are available all throughout the year since Orlando is year-round destination.  

Seaworld is a must see also while in Orlando.  I have personally been to the one out in San Diego and had a great time so I can imagine the venue in Orlando is pretty awesome just because of all of the surrounding attractions.  Nearby Orlando is Daytona Beach which is home to the famous Daytona 500 NASCAR race and is a very popular vacation destination.  Where else can one drive their car on the beach and enjoy 23 miles of sandy beach to play on.

One attraction that seems to be worth checking out is called “Medieval Times” which is a dinner attraction and tournament.  There are nine castles that have been made to show 11th Century performances with knights jousting on horseback while the audience sits down to a 4 course dinner.  The castles are spread throughout the entire U.S. and Canada.  The castle near Orlando is the Kissimmee Castle that even has a medieval village with 8 cottages.  So, if you want to see some knights jousting on horses and not have to go back in time then this is the place!

Orlando is much more than Disney World as one can see and all of the attractions are specifically designed to attract all ages so nobody is left out.  So, after your kids are done with Disney there is much more to do and experience in Orlando.  Plan a trip anytime!

Latitude 31 sits on the Jekyll Wharf on Jekyll Island and has some mouth watering edible delights.  Oysters Rockefeller, seafood crepes, and Grouper fingers (deep-fried Atlantic Grouper) are just some of the choices you get at Latitude 31.  For those of you more grounded on terra firma there is Chicken Piccata and a delectable Bourbon Peach and Pecan Glazed Pork Tenderloin.  I am looking for available flights to the south as I type…

The Jekyll Island Club Hotel is a must see and do as it is one the oldest historical attractions on the island.  With names, like Vanderbilts and Rockefellers, the Jekyll Island Club holds quite the ambiance.  Built after the Civil War around 1888 the club exudes the “old south”.  One of the dining options at the club is Courtyard at Crane.  Dining either inside or out, one can enjoy the Italian Renaissance architecture from which the cottage was modeled after and built around 1917.  Enjoy the Shrimp Bisque, Cottage Calamari, and the Grilled Salmon Alfredo in a relaxing casual atmosphere.

Located in the Jekyll Harbor Marina is Seajay’s Waterfront Cafe & Pub.  For those of you looking for down home flavor in a real casual setting, Seajay’s just might do it for you.  Famous for their Low Country Boil, which is a tasty combination of shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob and bitesize potatoes all cooked in a tasty aus jus.  The restaurant has a great view of the sunset from its’ deck and therefore offers “Sunset Deck Specials” ranging from crab cakes to barbequed bacon-wrapped scallops. 

So after a big day of exploring Jekyll Island from a canoe or on foot, one can be satisfied with the coastal cuisine that can be found on the island.  So if you are looking for that unique island getaway without going way down south, discover Jekyll Island, Georgia and all of its’ history and wildlife preservation.

Bird watching is among the top most favorable activities on Jekyll.  The Atlantic Flyway just so happens to run parallel to the island so seeing a lot of different birds is quite common.  The Audubon Society has recognized Jekyll as an IBA or important birding area.  The island is part of the Colonial Coast Birding Trail of which there are three birding sites located on the island for public viewing and observation.  Every year in October Jekyll Island hosts the Birding and Nature Festival where bird lovers come from all over to take field trips to over 25 different locations. 

Kayaking and canoeing the inland waterways of Jekyll is also among the top activities on the island.  With the wildlife being protected, one can see a lot from a kayak or canoe.  From native birds and fish to alligators, it’s like being in a zoo/acquarium with no walls.  Take a guided kayak tour through the marshes and tidal creeks of the island and see as well as learn about Jekyll’s ecological system. 

Nature walks are a great way to experience the primitive wildlife of Jekyll Island.  There are 10 miles of tidal beaches that one can walk and explore marine life.  Probably the most popular activity to do on Jekyll’s beaches is the Turtle Walk, where one can see turtles from May through August.  A nightly walk on the beaches in search of Loggerhead sea turtle nests are conducted by a trained guide so that you can see and learn everything about this amazing migration from ocean to land and back to ocean.  These guided and non-guided walks are perfect for the whole family to have an ecological experience during their vacation to Jekyll Island.

With a name like the Devils Garden, you probably think it doesn’t sound like a very good place to camp, but boy are you wrong. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever pitched my tent. Unless you’re backpacking or 4 wheeling waaaaay off road, it’s the only camping area you can legally use within Arches National Park in Moab, Utah. It’s also the only developed camping area in one of our most visited National Parks.

Even as such, the campsites are very large and it’s easy to pitch your tent well away from the road and other campers. They offer sites to accommodate RV’s of all sizes and have several campsites available for large groups. There aren’t any showers, but there are flush toilets, running water and drinking water and sinks for washing dishes.

The campground is well staffed with friendly, caring hosts who keep the place nearly spotless. Firewood is available for sale and rangers run evening programs in an incredible natural amphitheatre tucked in the folds of rock.

There are several trails emanating from the campground. Most of them take you to an arch or two and tend to be some of the least crowded trails in the park. Devils Garden campground is 18 miles into the park along winding two lane roads, so stock up on what you need in town before you head up there. It’s very close to some of the best natural attractions in Arches, like the Fiery Furnace, Delicate Arch and the almost embarassingly arch rich Devils Garden that gives the camping area its name.

The campground is very quiet during the day, since most people are out hiking around through the geological wonders that drew them to Moab. For many of them, especially the numerous foreign visitors, it’s a once in a lifetime trip. Since people from all over the world want to stay here, be certain to make your camp site reservations well in advance.

People come from all over the place to see the resident ducks on parade at the Peabody Memphis hotel. For their 75th birthday, the ducks got a spanking new $200,000 rooftop palace to live in.

Seriously, they are one of the top three attractions in Memphis and bring a lot of tourist dollars into the city. So, if you’re in Memphis, don’t miss them, especially if you have kids with you. Shows are at 11 am and 5 pm.

While you’re at the Peabody, stop in Lansky’s in the lobby area, known as Clothier to the King. This is were Elvis Presley got some of his very cool outfits.

Speaking of Elvis, as is to be expected, Graceland is another of the most popular stops for visitors to Memphis. See the auto museum, complete with a pink Cadillac, the Meditation Garden, the Gates of Graceland, Elvis’s customized planes and more King of Rock ‘n’ Roll memorabilia than even the mos

t ardent fan can imagine.

You can even get married in the Chapel in the Woods and stay in a special Elvis Suite at The Heartbreak Hotel and indulge in happy hour in the Jungle Room Lounge!

Harbor Town

Harbor Town is a planned community in the New Urbanism style on Mud Island, just northwest of downtown. Conceived and created by Henry Turley, Harbor Town was started in the late 1980’s and has become a showcase for urban planning. A greenbelt with ponds and trails runs along the mighty Mississippi, which includes a celebrated bike route.

Commercial development is now rounding out the neighborhoods with Miss Cordelia’s Grocery and Deli, a day care center, a Great Cuts salon and a boutique hotel with excellent restaurants and much needed space for classy special events in Memphis’s downtown area.

This famous thorough fare is known as The Home of the Blues AND The Birthplace of Rock’n'Roll. That’s a pretty powerful reason to stroll through it’s historic district! It has a notorious past as party central in the 1920’s and 30’s and there are still plenty of live juke joints with dance floors and down home cooking on the menu. To add a twist, tour Beale Street via a horsedrawn carriage. While that seems out of place in some towns, it’s a perfect fit for this Memphis neighborhood.

The great thing about Vail, Colorado is the accessibility.  Located right off of I-70 in the center of the Rocky Mountains is Vail, just a couple of hours west of Denver.  With I-70 being the “bloodline” connecting Denver to Grand Junction and beyond into Utah, motorists from the front range have to go by Vail.  Lucky for them since Vail is a ski destination.

The skiable terrain of Vail Mountain is HUGE and one should spend at least a week on the slopes to explore its’ expanse.  I, personally, have skied Vail several times and find that I could keep going and going and going without skiing the same run twice.  With the addition of Blue Sky Basin a few years back, Vail Mountain definitely becomes a playground for the die-hard skier and snowboarder.

Before I moved out to Colorado, I visited Vail one time and that’s all it took to make an incredible impression on me.  Just two years later I found myself driving to Colorado with dreams of powder skiing in the winter and hiking, biking and fishing in the summer.Tourists coming to Vail to play have many options for lodging.  Over the years, the town of Vail has been built up with hotels, lodges and private home and luxury condo rentals. One can find lodging right at the base of the ski area all the way to the ridge across the valley.  Vail sits in a steep valley so renting a vacation home high up on the ridge will afford a nice view of the Gore Mountain range or one can be down in the town close to all of the action and night life.

It’s all desert and dirt and rock until you drop down to river level. Here, world becomes refreshingly wet and cool. The water sparkles with white rapids, the banks are lined with greenery and a strand of sandy beach beckons around every bend.

You can raft the entire stretch of river from Dewey Bridge into Moab, Utah, which is close to 30 miles. There are nice developed campsites in numerous places along the road side of the river. On busy weekends, you’ll need to make a reservation to snag one of those spots. Absolutely sweet beaches for primitive camping are available on islands and along the cliff side of the river. No reservations necessary.

The Daily run, which all the local outfitters float, is by far the best one day trip. Put in at Hittle Bottom, where there are restrooms, ramps and plenty of parking. The take out, 13 miles downstream, is creatively named Take Out Beach, which also has a ramp, parking and pit toilets. Expect it to take 6-10 hours depending on water levels and how much you want to paddle and how much you want to float.

As I said, all the local Moab outfitters run this stretch. Lunch is included on day long trips and the guides will keep you entertained with river lore and water antics. The prices are very reasonable for a day’s adventure. If you’d rather do it on your own, most of the outfitters also rent an assortment of paddle and oar rafts, as well as inflatable kayaks. Expect mostly flat stretches broken up with Class I and II rapids most of the year, although a few tight bends in the river create Class IIIs during higher water.

Don’t forget your camera, but if you do, you’ll have an ironclad excuse to do it all over again!

In my opinion, live web cams are one of the best inventions ever! With a remote video feed, I can see for myself (mostly) what’s going on in particular location without having to rely on anyone else’s interpretation of the scene.

For instance, I can pull up the webcam on Vail Pass to see how bad the road conditions really are and if cars are sliding around on the ice or plowing through fluff. I can also see what’s going on the Delaware resort of Rehoboth Beach with a host of live cameras

Here’s a look at the boardwalk cam in Rehoboth, looking out into the Atlantic just north of Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel weathercam that looks south from Olive Avenue. The boardwalk here is awesome, with top notch eateries, as well as the more usual beach fare, like kettle fudge, Thrashers fries with vinegar and salt water taffy. There are also plenty of benches for comfy people or wave watching breaks during a stroll.

Here’s a composite view from several Rehoboth Beach web cams around town that changes every few minutes. You can get a good idea of how busy town is and what the weather and surf are like with this one.

The Delaware Department of Transportation traffic cam gives us a peek at what the drive will be like along Route 1 and Rehoboth Avenue. Very handy to know before you hit the road to head back home.

Here’s a look through the Roosevelt Inlet camera north of town for a good view of the boating conditions at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. This one will clue you in as to whether you should take your Dramamine before heading off to board the Cape May Lewes Ferry or if you’re in for a calm crossing to New Jersey.

So, when you’re headed to the Delaware shore a beach vacation, check out these web cameras. I’m hoping they put one up soon at my favorite Rehoboth Beach Motel, so I can see what’s happening at the pool in the land of fun and sun.

In 1880, a visionary entrepreneur built a luxurious resort, with an elegant hotel and a gambling casino, on the shores of this deep blue lake hidden in the Sierra Mountains. By the turn of the century, Lake Tahoe had become a summer playground for the rich and famous families of Sacramento, San Francisco and Virginia City. A railroad spur was built in the late 1890’s making travel to the Lake easier, so more people came and more plush hotels sprang up to accommodate them.

Wealthy families began building their own stately mansions along the shore. They cruised the Lake in yachts as ostentatious as their homes and lavish parties became commonplace. When you travel to Tahoe you can visit some of these impressively restored estates.

The 12,000 square foot Erhman Mansion, built in 1903, is the centerpiece of Sugar Pine Point State Park on the western side of the Lake. It’s open daily for tours during the summer and is a fantastic setting for weddings and other special events.

The 74 acre Tallac Historic Site is home to the Valhalla, Pope and Baldwin Estates. You may view the interior and art exhibits of the Pope Estate, built in 1894, on a guided tour. Valhalla is home to a summer arts and music festival and other seasonal events that are open to the public.

One of the oddest mansions is really a Scandinavian themed medieval castle dubbed Vikingsholm, complete with a sod roof and beams carved into dragons. It can be toured daily during the summer months, but is most striking when viewed from the water. Steamboats chug visitors across the Lake to Emerald Bay and around Tahoe’s only island several times a day to see it.

For a glimpse into the yachting life, visit the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood, on the California side. You’ll be amazed at the painstakingly cared for gleaming wooden boats, many of which are still lakeworthy and see use during the summers.

While the opulent era phased out in the early 1950’s, there are still many luxurious Lake Tahoe vacation homes, estates and lodges tucked in amongst the towering pines along the lakeshore. Keep your eyes open for a glimpse of them as you pass by.

Canada boasts of a place that is similar in dynamic terrain; Collingwood, Ontario.  This area just happens to be Ontario’s #1 destination for year-round fun and adventure.  Collingwood is home to the Blue Mountain Ski Resort which has over 30 trails ranging from green (easy) to double black (expert).  Blue Mountain Resort is a Intrawest Resort which is the same developers as Whistler and Blackhomb.  I have heard only good things about Whistler/Blackhomb so I can imagine what Blue Mountain must be like.

The town of Collingwood, Ontario embraces a full year of activity by being a 4 season destination.  You can find Italian and Moroccan cuisine and also local seafood prepared in a multiple amount of ways.  A good variance in dining experiences is having the traditional style along side the modern bistro where you can taste the local history and enjoy the modern conveniences of today.

If you are planning a trip to Ontario’s recreation destination know as Collingwood and Blue Mountain you will find accommodations in the form of condos, lodges and chalets that are either slope-side or just a short walk to the local retail amenities.

Destin has a annual fishing rodeo that is held every October and lasts all month and anyone can participate.  The Gulf waters off of Destin produce some of the best fishing around.  From Marlin and Sailfish to Snapper and Grouper to Hammerhead Shark, the Gulf is alive with sport fish.  There are many charter boats that you can find to go fish for the 1/2 day, full day, and even night.

Where there is great fishing there is great eating!  They go hand in hand in most cases and Destin sure has it covered.  When there is a plethora of seafood to be harvested and eaten you can find great local restaurants that incorporate seafood in just about every thing that you can sink your mouth into.  Tuna, crab, calamari, shrimp, oysters, mahi-mahi, grouper and amberjack all can be served to you fresh daily.  Fine dining can also be experienced during your stay in Destin.  Other restauranteurs have blended other styles like Louisiana Cajun into their seafood delectable dishes.

Destin has definitely grown since the late 70’s and 80’s since I have been there.  The lodging options are immense and range all over the board for what you expect for your Desitn vacation.  You can choose to rent a luxury vacation home for privacy and space or opt for one of the many hotels that spread up and down the beach.  From condos and townhomes to homes you can find a vacation rental on the beach or just steps away. 

Vacationing to Florida includes a lot of happening cities and attractions like Miami and Disney World so do not forget about the other side of the panhandle where Destin resides and beautiful beaches and great fishing abound.

Hopefully, you answered with a resounding “YES” to that question being that I intended for it to be rhetorical…  I have only been to the Mexican side of the Caribbean and not to the many other destinations like St. John, USVI and Tortola, BVI.  Like Mexico, the United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands have much beauty and ancient history to be explored.

The island of St. John lies just east of St. Thomas and the large island of Puerto Rico.  The Virgin Islands National Park makes up more than half of the island and is a wonderful place to hike to see the raw beauty of the island.  All of the trails range from 15 minutes to 2 hours so extra precautions are definitely needed to make sure your adventure doesn’t become a nightmare.  St. John highly enforces preserving their island to keep it the way it was discovered.  National parks always suggest “take only pictures and leave only footsteps” and that mantra should be followed in St. John.  There are about 15 trails on the North Shore of the island and about 8 trails winding through the South Shore of the island.  One can view marine life and local birds in their natural habitat while also discovering ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks long ago by the native Arawak Indians.  Many of the hiking trails end in a cove where snorkeling can be done but swim at your own risk for obvious reasons - no lifeguards.  St. John is mountainous to an extent and views of the other neighboring islands are possible from hiking these trails.  One can “rough it” and camp inside the park to enjoy the island in its’ primitive habitat or opt to rent a vacation home or condo and make day trips to explore the island.

Just to the east of St. John lies the island of Tortola which is a British Virgin Island or BVI.  Touring the island can be done in the air, ground or on the water.  Hiking can also be done on Tortola inside one of the parks.  Sage Mountain National Park has the highest point in both the US and British Islands.  Sage Mountain is at 1716 feet above sea level and therefore attracts weather which supports the rain forests that exist on the island.  Hiking on Tortola and St. John have their challenges with the short and steep terrain that exist on both islands.

Going to the Caribbean can have different meanings to a lot of people.  Some like to hang out on the beach with a fruity drink and some like to experience an “eco-challenge” for their Caribbean vacation.  The choice is yours and it’s nice to have a choice.  So, the next time you are thinking of going to the beach for vacation, consider St. John USVI and Tortola BVI and get away from it all.  I mean literally.

  When coming to the Fish Creek area in Door County, one can find lodging fairly easily and call it home base while each day consists of branching out and exploring the local sites and sounds.  Fish Creek is a small town that is over 150 years old and began as a fishing village teaming with lumberjacks and farmers.  With hard work ethic embraced by those of the past, calling it a day and enjoying a beer or flask of wine was probably pretty normal. 

Today in Door County there is only one brewery that calls this place home and they enjoy making craft brews both seasonal and flagship beers.  Their variations include IPA, wheat, copper ale, blonde, porter and a fall time favorite; pumpkin ale with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon.  Since the microbrew revolution in the 90’s breweries have been pairing food with beer and providing that in their restaurants.  Ribs, locally caught fish and pasta all pair very well with the beer variations previously mentioned. 

This region is also home to vineyards and therefore wineries especially with the prominent existence of fruit orchards.  As with beer and food pairings, wine and food definitely go together.  The local wine produced in Door County boasts of light tanins made to allow the palate to taste the fare.  With that being said, wine bars allow the customer to taste local wine with local food.

Fish Creek, Wisconsin in Door County provides fun, activity and good fare and drink to those who arrive weary and tired.

Now, my first taste of lobster came when we arrived in Bar Harbor and went straight down to the warf.  You chose which lobster you wanted and in a matter of minutes, it was served to you with butter and lemon.   The meal was “wicked good” as they say up there.  What a way to experience my first impression of lobster and the beautiful state of Maine.

Bar Harbor is quite a ways up the coast once entering the state and you don’t have to go that far to experience fresh lobster and the Maine coastal lifestyle.  Just about an hour northeast of Boston is the town of Ogunquit, Maine.  Ogunquit is a quaint artist community with lots of festivals and seasonal celebrations therefore the artistry gets into the food.

Lobster can dressed up or down when it comes to presentation and taste.  Combining old world traditional cuisine with the fresh seafood available creates dinner entrees that are full of flavors and aromas.  Entrees and side dishes involving prosciutto, foie gras, garlic and herbs just to name a few definitely are a result of inspiration and just plain fresh ingredients.  Guests and visitors to Ogunquit have quaint logding options with exceptional in-house dining so plan your trip today!  Ogunquit hosts many styles of restaurants to suit everyone’s taste buds and affordability. 

When mentioning lobster being dressed down, Ogunquit offers the less sophisticated palate plenty of choices.  You can get lobster stew, lobster roll, broiled lobster, lobster saute, baked lobster, and even lobster salad.  Finding the quaint eating establishments has always been my favorite challenge when looking for good quality food and service.   

If you are thinking of going to Maine for a lobster filled vacation and take in the Atlantic breezes then don’t hesitate to check out the coastal town of Ogunquit, Maine.

Williamsburg, Virginia is a great place to take the whole family due to several things.  Those reasons being Busch Gardens Amusement Park, Colonial Williamsburg, and the neighboring historic towns of Jamestown and Yorktown.  This is where America was born over 200 years ago after the Revolutionary War.

Now, every child loves amusement parks especially for the rides.  Busch Gardens of Williamsburg has been nominated the world’s “most beautiful theme park” for 17 straight years.  There are over 50 exhilarating rides to go on with one being called “Griffon”.  It is the world’s tallest floorless dive coaster that drops over 200 feet straight down and gets up to 70 mph!  Roller coasters were not made to do that when I was a kid.  Besides the rides, there are shows, animal attractions, historical and educational resources and dining options just to name a few.  Adults (ages 10 and up) can have fun in the park for about $60/day per person and any child ages 3 to 9 get in for about $50 for the day.  Be sure to check out Busch Gardens during your stay in Williamsburg!

Your trip to Williamsburg is probably based on the amount of history there is to learn.  The Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area is a must see for all of you history buffs.  Williamsburg, VA is also known as “Revolutionary City” and rightly so due to the birth of America after the Revolutionary War ended in 1783 when we gained independence from the British.  The Historic Area has museums, shops, educational learning resources, and real-life recreations and dramatizations of historical events.  A definite must visit for any family wanting to learn about our historic past as the United States of America.The neighboring towns of Jamestown and Yorktown help Williamsburg make up the triangle of Virginia and are equally as important in the makeup of our nation.  In Jamestown, archaeologists are currently digging for the town’s remains ranging from coins to building materials which will shed light on what actually existed in the area.  In historic Yorktown, visitors will find re-enactments of the way life was in early America post Revolutionary War.  Take a guided tour of the Yorktown Battlefield and relive the massive battle that took place. 

With all of the history to be experienced and learned, one needs to have a home base from which to take daily adventures.  Williamsburg is the perfect place to be due to its’ location being in the center of all the attractions and historical landmarks.  There are vacation packages available for anytime of the year.  Don’t hesitate to make a family trip to Williamsburg, Virginia and experience the past coming alive.

Tuscany is “all the rave” to most people I would think and I don’t doubt that being that I haven’t been yet.  I did get to explore parts of Italy a few years ago on my Honeymoon like Venice, Verona and Milan but I haven’t made it to the Piedmont region.  I’m sure the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” brought some extra attention to the region as well.  The idea of that beautiful region being surrounded by the Mediterranean sounds like a “mini- Italy” and it is – it is called the island of Elba.

Many come to Elba as a tourist and guest of the island.  Obviously, a travel guide would be very helpful to take advantage of the island’s attractions and activities.  The town of Capoliveri attracts lots of attention and therefore offers quite the nightlife.  One place in particular is called “Sugar Reef “which is a live jazz venue and bar.  There is a slight dress code and the drinks are a bit inflated in price but the view and ambiance is quite enticing.  One other place to check out would be Il Tinello at Marina di Campo which also offers live music and coastal Tuscan cuisine.    

The Island of Elba lies just over 6 miles off of the Italian mainland and is the largest island in Tuscany while also being the 3^rd largest island of Italy.  Most of the island’s occupants dwell in the villages by the water where fishing and coastal activities abound.   As you can probably imagine, fresh Italian seafood combined with Tuscan cuisine sounds out of this world.

The town of Cape St. Andrea on Elba Island is also one to not miss visiting.  One can find lodging rather easily and with style.  From boutique hotels to moderate rooms for rent, Cape St. Andrea offers the guest a full experience of Tuscany by the Sea.  Diving is a popular activity on this part of the island offering sights of sunfish and lobster accompanied by colorful “gorgonian” or sea coral. 

Whatever port of Elba Island that you come to will not disappoint you in the slightest.  Fresh seafood and wine along with quaint lodging options and local music make for a great way to pass time in my book.  If you want to combine a Tuscany feel with a Mediterranean island then plan a trip to Isola d’Elba, the island of Tuscany.

With winter vastly approaching, the state of Wisconsin definitely feels the cold and chill in the air especially being near the lake.  Winter activities like skiing, snow-shoeing, ice-skating and sledding are all very prominent in these neck of the woods.  Of course, the Green Bay Packers make for a good time if you can weather “the weather”.  I have always enjoyed watching the Packers play in the snow on TV just to wonder how they keep hold of the football.  You can definitely find respite indoors and curl up in front of a nice cozy fire and enjoy a hot chocolate or latte at the local cafe or at one of the many quaint bed and breakfasts that can be found in the area. 

Once the snow and ice start to disappear in spring, the locals remain outside to enjoy the blooming of the local flora and the visitors take in walking tours to learn about Sturgeon Bay’s history.  Throughout the town one can see shipyards dotting the coastline and lighthouses to explore.  

Summertime is a great time to visit Sturgeon Bay especially if you enjoy being out on the water either fishing, swimming, sailing or kayaking.  From horse-back riding to going on bike tours and riding the ferry, there is much to do in Wisconsin’s Sturgeon Bay.

Fall time is beautiful with the leaves changing color and the slight nip in the air.  Enjoying farmer’s markets and outdoor fruit stands are a local passtime here in Door County’s Sturgeon Bay.  Taking walks through leaf covered trails make for a nice outing before the wintry snow starts.  Fall is also time to harvest the grapes (the kind you drink, of course).  Check out and visit Wisconsin’s local wineries and sample their fruits of labor.

So, if you happen to be traveling on business or pleasure to Green Bay, be sure to make some time to travel a little further north to Sturgeon Bay for the day or two and explore this little coastal town.

When I was a kid spending summers at the Shore, luxury was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind. It was all about sand and surf and the freedom of bare feet, late sundowns and no school. However, now that we’re all older, we sometimes want to pamper ourselves in a little luxury, even when we’re at the beach and in Rehoboth Beach Delaware we have plenty of opportunity to do just that. Mendocino, California is one of the most beautiful and scenic destinations of North America in my book. This very place inspired me to ask my then girlfriend to marry me and we have fortunately been back to visit once since then. I cannot say enough great things about the area which encompasses the Redwood forest and the neighboring towns of Boonville and Yorkville.

When going through Boonville, beer is highly toted as well as wine. Any hop lover will enjoy the local brew as a refreshing break to all of the wine that is available. Next you will experience dense redwood forests as you make your way to the coast and Mendocino.

When driving from San Francisco, one gets the chance to see and or stop at many local wineries to sample their fruits of labor. I, personally, like to head toward Healdsburg to start my wine country experience and then continue north. With good wine comes good food and Healdsburg offers some great dining experiences. You need to budget in some time and not be in a rush when your destination is Mendocino. Highway 128 takes you through tight, twisty turns with overhanging oak trees and lush flora as you head towards Yorkville and the coast. There are several wineries that have tasting rooms open to the public awaiting your arrival. After all of the stops for wining and dining, you finally get to Mendocino where you can relax, unwind and have your choice of some of the most charming bed and breakfasts for your lodging needs. The views of the Pacific and the waves crashing on the rocks make for a very special experience. So, if you are a wine connoisseur as well as a beer lover, you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit this craggy coastal town known as Mendocino.

As I personally grew up in the south (Georgia) my family went to Destin, Florida just about every summer for a week on the beach. With white beaches and clear blue water, Destin is a major destination (no pun intended…) for southerners as well as tourists from all over the world. The Emerald Coast as it’s known as offers the vacationing visitor all of the activities that one can expect when going to the beach.

During the whole month of October is the Destin Fishing Rodeo where anyone can sign-up, go out on a registered boat (private or charter), fish and get their catch weighed for free at a local seafood establishment. There are over 30,000 anglers who compete for over $100,000 in cash and prizes. Just about every kind of gamefish can be caught in the waters off of Destin, Florida. From Mackerel to the mighty Marlin, all fish are recognized for the tournament. There are many choices when it comes to lodging in Destin. One can stay in a luxury vacation rental, hotel, all-inclusive resort, motel and even “rough it” by going camping. Whether you are right on the beach or close by, everything is convenient to the strip of Destin.If you are looking for some fun on the water, like parasailing, check out the many options Destin has to offer. A mile long and 2 blocks wide, so you’re never more than a block from salt water-that’s Dewey Beach Delaware, perhaps the skinniest town ever! You can walk to the rambunctious Atlantic Ocean or the more tranquil Rehoboth Bay in just a couple of minutes from anywhere in town. You can’t get much closer to the sea without actually being on a boat.

If you prefer to travel north or south along the coast, the good time Jolley Trolley will get you there in beach style. This inexpensive shuttle service operates on a regular schedule throughout the summer months and is a popular way to get safely home along Highway 1 where the boisterous nightlife often spills out into the streets.

Speaking of boisterous, The Starboard, a Dewey Beach landmark club, has an incredible Bloody Mary bar that everyone over 21 should try at least once. The smorgasbord includes at least a dozen types of vodka followed by 700 different fixin’s along 30 feet of wall.

Another Starboard claim to fame is their beefy breakfasts. Try the Eggs Del Marva (eggs benedict topped with lump crabmeat), the Full Monty, which includes just about every breakfast food you can name, or a five egg omelet. There’s never a cover charge and the hearty party atmosphere throbs both night and day indoors and out on the deck.

Another rowdy tradition in Dewey Beach is the Greyhounds Reach the Beach festival held every October. It’s like a convention for greyhound lovers and those who have adopted dogs rescued from dog racing tracks. Businesses throughout town sponsor educational sessions and fun events, like a costume ball (yes the dogs are dressed up), but the best thing about the weekend is that there are truly greyhounds everywhere and boy do those hounds love to run on the beach!

I was looking at some information on sea kayaking..thinking this would be a better introduction to kayaking - calm coastal waters and bays…marine wildlife - no rocks or class-5 rapids.  It looks like there are a few places that are great choices.  Monterey Bay, Ogunquit Maine, or the San Juan Islands in Washington.  I dug deeper into the San Juan Islands idea, as the pacific northwest is my favorite place to vacation.  I found a ton of information and opportunities for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.

The one drawback to this plan seems to be the presence of Orcas…you know…KILLER whales?  Could it be safe to float around in a tiny tiny boat when one could just swallow the whole shebang?  After much web-surfing..I found no accounts of tourists being killed by whales while kayaking.  It must be pretty safe.

There are quite a few online resources for the San Juan Island kayaker - and outfitters who cater to the tourist-types.  GoNorthwest has a pretty information-rich section and there are some outfitters with really great websites that list trips, times, dates & rates.  Check out San Juan Kayak Expeditions, Outdoor Odysseys, or Discovery Sea Kayaks.  Some operators offer day trips and some offer island exploration tours that range from 2  to 4-day adventures.  Prices seem to vary greatly - along with inclusions in each package.

I was advised to look for the Whal Watch Operators Association Northwest logo on any operator’s website.  This means the operator has agreed to adhere to proper wildlife viewing standards, provide trained naturalists, and promote responsible stewardship of the whale populations in the San Juan Islands.

While you’re in the area - lodging options are varied.  If you’re looking for deals try Friday Harbor and the Bird Rock Hotel.  They offer San Juan Island getaways packages that include kayaking, room & even a dining credit.  Check their website for details.  If you’d like something a bit more private - try a vacation rental from Windemere San Juan Island.

It’s a given you’re going to have an amazing time in the San Juans - and it looks like kayaking is the perfect way to experience the rich history, calm waters, dark forests and abundant wildlife.

When you think of incredible beaches, New York may not be the first place that comes to mind. However, Long Island, particularly the area know as The Hamptons, has long been the preferred beach destination for those who can afford to vacation anywhere on Earth.

The east end of Long Island, which is home to East Hampton and Montauk, sticks nearly one hundred miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. The nearby Gulf Stream blesses the peninsula with relatively moderate temperatures and it’s bounded by water on 3 sides so the fishing in incredible. A former whaling port, Montauk is now home to both the largest commercial and sport fishing fleets in the State of New York. Anglers from new York CIty take the train here to catch striped bass, blues, sharks and other ocean species.

The zoning of the town of East Hampton prohibits “chains” of all kinds. There are no McDonalds or Walmarts or Red Lobsters or Baskin Robbins or Great Clips. Chain hotels are also verboten. All of the thriving, independent mom and pop businesses give the town a unique and refreshing flavor found in few other places.

There are 8 interesting New York State Parks and 2 Suffolk County Parks within the 70 square miles encompassed by the town of East Hampton. Two parks were former military bases, two have lighthouses, two boast golf courses, and eight of them have public beaches.

If you’re lucky enough to visit East Hampton in early August, when the sun and surf are both at their best, don’t miss the Sandcastle Contest held each year on the Atlantic Avenue Beach off of Bluff Road. Watching the fun is free or you join in with your own team of castles builders for a chance at fame in The Hamptons.

Each year around harvest time, locals and visitors gather on the runway at the old airport to see who can hit targets with flying pumpkins launched from all kinds of weird contraptions - giant sling shots, home made catapults, air cannons and things I can’t even name. These folks put some serious time and effort into it, too. Just wait until you see the size of these things!

Since it’s also near Halloween, paricipants and spectators parade around in their best costumes for the event. There’s live music, pie eating contests (pumpkin pie, of course), crafts vendors, game booths and yummy eats.

People from all over the world visit Moab for all kinds of activities - touring the geological wonders, viewing the incredible scenery, rockhounding, hiking, biking, jeeping, rafting and rock climbing to name a few. Maybe someday they’ll realize how much fun celebrating harvest and Halloween in the red rock desert can be, too.

I had no idea how big Idaho was until I tried to drive across it long ways. Wheee-oh! It’s nearly 350 miles top to bottom. It contains a little over 83,500 square miles of land, but they say if it were stretched out flat, it would be almost as big as Texas.

Here are some other fun facts I didn’t know about Idaho - firsts, biggest and mosts:

• Sun Valley Idaho was America’s first destination ski resort. It was created in 1936.
• The world’s first nuclear plant was built in Arco Idaho in 1951. It was also the first nuclear plant to suffer a melt down in 1955.
• The deepest river gorge in America is Hells Canyon. Yes, it’s even deeper than the Grand Canyon at 7,900 feet deep.
• Idaho has the world’s densest population of nesting birds of prey- hawks, eagles and falcons.
• The largest man-made geyser in the world is at Soda Springs, ID. It was created in 1937 when drilling for water. Its on a timer to erupt every hour on the hour and shoots up 100 feet.
• The Gem State contains more miles of river than any other state - 3,100 of them.
• The biggest tree in the state is 177 feet tall, over 18 feet in diameter and over 3,000 years old. It’s a Western Red Cedar.
• The tallest single sand dune-470 ft- in North America is in Bruneau Dunes State Park.

Durango is rimmed by glorious mountains and boasts its own world-class ski hill, Durango Mountain Resort, also know as Purgatory. It offers everything from never-ever lessons to off piste snowcat skiing and snowboarding in a family friendly atmosphere.

Durango is also blessed with a large high country lake. Nearby Vallecito Lake is popular year ’round for fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding and hunting. At 8,000 feet, it’s a cool retreat during the dog days of summer. Camping and cabins are available for those who’d like to spend some time there.

The Animas River runs right through town and offers waters mild enough for inner tubing and canoeing or wild enough to challenge the best kayakers. Numerous local rafting outfitters offer half day and full day trips and the Whitewater Park hosts events throughout the season who those who prefer watching.

Mountain biking rules in Durango. Just close your eyes and imagine rolling through meadows lush with wildflowers and surrounded by the snowcapped peaks of the San Juan range. There are nearly 2,000 miles of single track in the area and it truly doesn’t get any better than this.

Whenever I book a trip, I always opt for the travel insurance. I can never predict what may happen and, without adequate protection, all of the money I have paid for airline tickets, rentals, excursions, lodging and the like can just be washed down the drain and there’s nothing I can do about it.

For a long vacation or a trip overseas, this can amount to a significant amount of money that you cannot afford to lose. Perhaps you’ve been saving for a year or more to pay for the trip. Even worse is when you put it on credit cards and have to pay it off (plus interest) anyway, without ever enjoying it.

Depending on the policy you choose, trip insurance generally runs about 5-10% of the trip cost. All kinds of policies are available that will cover you in all types of situations. Be certain to read and understand what you are being insured against and weigh whether that is appropriate in your circumstances. For example, if you are going to France, you may not need hurricane coverage, but it you are going to the Caribbean in September, that option is definitely worth paying.

In addition, you want to make certain you are insured against accidents and illnesses you may experience while abroad. Your regular medical insurance may not cover you, especially if you’re active and participate in sports where injuries are not uncommon.

I like to think about travel insurance as the way of insuring my vacation. If I get sick, if the mountain passes close due to snow and I can’t get to the airport, if there’s a family emergency I can’t ignore, or if any one of dozens of other unexpected things happens, I’m covered. I don’t lose the money I have invested and can take my trip at a later time. This gives me great piece of mind and makes the cost of the insurance very worthwhile.

Do you long for a quiet stretch of white sand where you can relax in solitude? Then, travel to The Forgotten Coast of Florida for the beach vacation of your dreams.

The Forgotten Coast is the area in the crook of the Florida panhandle (also know as the Big Bend) that spans the pristine coastline from St Marks Lighthouse on the east to Mexico Beach on the west. Along the way are Port St Joe, Cape San Blas, Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Eastpoint, St George Island, Lanark Village and other obscure small towns and barrier islands.

This region is famous (but not too famous!) for its fresh seafood. The Annual Florida Seafood Festival is held in Apalachicola at the beginning of each November. Other yearly feasts include the Apalachicola Downtown Oyster Roast, the Oyster Spat Festival on St George Island, a Low Country Shrimp Boil near Simmons Bayou, the Stone Crab Festival in St Marks and the Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival in Panacea. In addition, nearly every local festival offers plenty of fresh seafood options to attendees.

These downhome celebrations are absolutely the best way to enjoy the local harvest from the sea. Along with regional favorites, you’ll get to try recipes rarely found in restaurants and talk to the people who catch and prepare fish and shellfish as part of their daily routine.

Flounder, grouper, mackerel and snapper and many other delicious species are abundant in the brackish estuaries, the protected waters of Apalachicola Bay and the expansive Gulf of Mexico. Booking a day on a local charter fishing boat makes it easy to catch your own “mess of fish” for dinner.

So, if just plain relaxing and dining on prime seafood top your list of things to do on a Florida beach vacation, take off your shoes, put on your bib and go directly to the Forgotten Coast.

I’m not a huge golfer, I haven’t ever understood the lure of chasing that little white ball around the lawn - but there are those in my family that are addicts.  Every time we talk vacation we have to talk golf courses.  I don’t really whine much about it because I know that’s prime beach and shopping time for me. 

We were researching a vacation to Florida last year - and I wrote some on shelling in the Marco Island areaand ran across the information on golf on the Paradise Coast.  For those of you who dont know, the Paradise coast encompasses Naples, Marco Island and part of the Everglades along the southwestern coast.

The golf information wasnt hard to find.  I found a good site called “Marco Island Golf” that outlined all of the courses on Marco Island and in nearby Naples, FL.  This little stretch of coast is home to no less than SEVENTEEN public and private courses:

COPIA is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the palate. Through food and wine they teach cultural lessons and expand the knowledge of any foodie looking for a challenge. The Napa Valley in general is a hotbed of culinary delights. There are restaurants from one end of the valley to the other and they all take advantage of the local produce, wines, cheeses and more to create wonderful flavors and memories.

Other restaurants in the area with stellar reputations include Auberge, La Toque, Meadowwood, and The French Laundry - thought by some to be the very best restaurant in North America - in Yountville, CA just a few miles from the town of Napa. The thing that intrigues me about the prospect of eating in Napa is the possibility of pairing the absolutely PERFECT wine with each course. I live in the middle of nowhere Colorado - and our wine selection is OK - but the opportunity to try wines with food is pretty limited. Our restaurant choices are pretty limited also, so beyond what’s “in the box” at Chili’s we’re wine-deprived.

I want to go to Napa and eat and drink my way from one end of the valley to the other. The dilemma is the sheer number of fabulous places to eat and drink. If I started at noon - I’d be drunk and full by dinner time. Then, by absolute luck and some strategic Google browsing - I found my mecca….a restaurant shuttle. Guests of the Wine Country Inn in St. Helena are treated to a complimentary Napa Valley restaurant shuttle that delivers you door to door - and to some of the best restaurants in the valley every night from 6pm to 11pm.  I cant imagine a more perfect way to enjoy good wine and food.

If you like to walk - stay right in town near the Napa Town Center and you’re going to be near some of the best - all within walking distance.  Sometimes that’s the best way to enjoy a meal - with a leisurely walk afterward.

Maryland’s Eastern Shore is far removed from the urban corridor of the Mid Atlantic coast. Its Southern roots run very deep. This was one of the areas first colonized by the British and its people embraced the bucolic plantation culture that thrived prior to the Civil War.

Those who remain there live close to nature and move at a slower pace. Much of the work, culture and recreation revolves around the dominating body of water we call the Chesapeake Bay. Here a just a few of the interesting places to consider for a Chesapeake Bay vacation:

St Michaels calls itself the Heart and Soul of the Chesapeake Bay and few would argue it. It’s surrounded by water and sits about half way down the long arm of water. Easton Maryland is the arts and cultural center of the Eastern Shore with more history than anyone can absorb in one weekend. There are fairs, festivals, concerts, exhibits, openings, receptions, plays and other special events going on year round. There’s also antique shopping galore and fresh seafood wherever you turn.

You can easily see all three of these interesting and attractive towns in just one long weekend on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. What are you waiting for?

Hunters is a trendy club with spirited DJs, go go dancers  and a pounding dance floor that gets busier and wilder as the night goes on. While the party’s getting started, play billards, surf the ‘net or lounge on the finely misted outdoor terrace with a happy hour special. It’s all good. 

The Oasis has charismatic DJs running an amazing sound system, two bars, an indoor courtyard, a game room, theme nights, a piano bar with sing a longs, and perhaps the biggest dance floor you’ve ever seen.  And The Oasis stays open until 4 am!

For the ultimate bash, rent an incredible house for the weekend and throw your own party. It’s not uncommon for luxury Palm Springs vacation rentals to have sleek custom pools, completely private courtyards with incredible gardens, stunning architecture and one-of-a-kind furnishings. When visiting the Central Rockies in Colorado, one usually has to go near or through the town of Vail.  Summer and winter activities abound here and therefore attract many a visitor from Denver and beyond.  I know that when I think of Colorado cuisine, elk, venison, trout and buffalo come to my mind but that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Vail amongst other neighboring mountain towns has global influence when it comes to dining and cuisine as well as its’ residents and visitors.  Vail and Beaver Creek come together to provide the valley guest luxury home rentals and amenities second to none. 

Culinary imagination is unleashed in a variety of ways when ingredients are the focus of attention.    European influence is fairly easy to find in the mountains of Colorado.  From gazpacho and veal sweetbreads to escargots and grilled lamb, the French have made a nice home in the central Rockies.

Many of us think of Palm Springs as a destination for the rich and famous, but toss that mind set out or you’ll miss the exhilarating outdoor adventures you can have around this desert oasis. You don’t have to be a die hard to enjoy them, either. Here are just a few ideas to get the family outside during a Palm Springs vacation.

Big Wheel Bike Tour’s Earthquake Canyon Express is an unforgettable ride and it’s almost all downhill. Just about anyone who can ride a bicycle can enjoy this trip. The rewards at the end are stunning views of Mt. San Jacinto and the Salton Sea and a unique and tasty date shake at the Oasis Date Gardens. It’s a great way to spend a day in the desert, see the sights and get some exercise, too.

Guided horseback rides are another Palm Springs adventure almost anyone can enjoy. The one to two hour trips into the Indian Canyons don’t require reservations and the scenery is unforgettable. Be a cowboy or cowgirl for a few hours and be sure to bring your camera.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway takes you up, up, up. Up two and and half miles from Chino Canyon on the north edge of Palm Springs to the top of San Jacinto Mountain. At over 10,000 feet, the climate is considerably cooler and often frosted with snow. Once on top, there are hiking trails, camping, guided nature walks, sledding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, depending on the season. When leaving Denver in the rear-view mirror and heading up I-70 going West, one starts to see the Rocky Mountains in front and the plains behind. After going through Eisenhower Tunnel and Loveland Pass one starts going down the other side only to meet Summit County head on. There are three towns adjacent to each other, Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne. There are five ski areas that can be accessed rather easily and those are Breckenridge, Copper, Keystone, A-Basin and Loveland ski area. A-Basin and Loveland tend to be used by the locals but should not be overlooked by any skier or snowboarder. Most of the skier traffic to Summit County comes from the Front Range and Denver just because it is so convenient and the ski area options are so great.

Transportation is very easy to obtain from Denver and one can stop driving once getting to Summit County because everything is at your fingertips – retail shopping, dining, rental shops, clothing outlets, grocery stores, lodging and transportation.

Breckenridge has their own brewery – Breckenridge Brewery which serves food and beer and actually is so big that they distribute their beer all throughout Colorado.

In the winter, Summit County is known for their skiing and snowboarding and is a winter wonderland. With five ski areas available to play on, Summit County really gives the visitor a plethora of choices for “sliding around”. Arapahoe Basin just added a new lift that opened up an additional 400 acres and 36 runs which account for 80% more terrain. The new terrain is called the “Montezuma Bowl” and it opened up last season.

Copper Mountain is a host of several ski race events during the winter for both young and old competitors. Copper Mountain is located just west of Dillon and is conveniently situated right off of I-70.

Breckenridge is tucked away a little ways off of the interstate and is known for being one of coldest ski areas in central Colorado. The town of Breckenridge is a quaint old town with tons of charm and spirit and should be visited during the winter or summer.

Keystone ski area has the only night skiing available in the state and is therefore the largest night ski operation.

The nightlife is just that – lively both day and night. In the tri-town area which is Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne there are three micro-breweries – Backcountry Brewery, Pug Ryan’s and The Dillon Dam Brewery (which I have personally been to all three and they are all very good).

Keystone has plenty of nightlife as well with saloons, taverns, bars, lounges and a nightclub in River Run.

All in all, Summit County has enough to do for just about anybody at anytime. Head west from Denver and in a short amount of time you are in Summit County, a Rocky Mountain playground.

Fishing in the Keys incorporates just about every type and style of fishing ever imagined.  From deep-sea fishing with heavy tackle to fly and light tackle fishing and even spear-fishing on the reef, the Keys offer excitement to every angler.  The fish that are usually caught are tarpon, bonefish, barracuda, shark, dolphin, sailfish, marlin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna just to name a few. 

One can book a charter trip for a half day, full day, 10 hours worth and even a night fishing adventure.

From early March until late July one can catch tarpon day and/or night.  Locally known as “Silver Kings”, tarpon arrive in the Key West area in the early summer to spawn.  One of the most exciting ways to catch tarpon is on a flat boat with a fly rod in the clear, blue salt flats.  This kind of fishing is called “sight fishing” and the angler must be able to cast accurately in order to attract the fish.  The salt flats are very shallow (one to two feet deep) so you can imagine the exhilaration when there is a “fish on”. 

From Key West or “The Conch Republic” deep-sea or off-shore fishing takes the angler out far where one is most likely to catch larger fish but not necessarily.  Backcountry fishing takes place along the edges of the flats where the water is slightly warmer and therefore home to big tarpon as well as shark and barracuda.  Guides will typically also offer reef and wreck fishingwhich produces amberjack, cobia, snapper, grouper and large shark.   Guides will advise you to “catch and release” but you can keep your catch if you want to have it prepared by a local restaurant and serve it up to your friends and family.

The greatest reward for an angler is to have his or her catch be served up on a platter at the local restaurant.  What better way to enjoy your hard day’s work (fishing) than to savor the fresh taste of the fish that has been prepared by a professional.  It has been said that there are over 365 places to eat in Key West – that’s one for every day of the year!

Other than being the southernmost point of the United States, Key West, Florida has many other labels attached to its’ name.  Many know that Earnest Hemingway called Key West home for a number of years during the 1930’s and also wrote several novels.  Prior inhabitants of Key West were several Indian tribes and of course the founder, Ponce De Leon of Spain way back in 1513. 

Key West is home to the Regatta Key West, Conch Republic Days, Lobster mini-season and the Poker Run just to name a few.  Everything mentioned after Regatta Key West probably raises some eyebrows as well as mine.  The Conch Republic Days are in April and the locals have a conch shell blowing contest, a bed race down Duval Street and a reenactment of the battle for independence of the Conch Republic.  The lobster mini-season is only two days and it takes place in July.  It’s where local divers get to take the lobster bounty for themselves.  Lodging is at full capacity during this time.  The Poker Run is charitable event where thousands upon thousands of motorcyclists ride from the mainland to Key West and pick up poker cards along the way at five designated points.  Whoever has the best hand at the end of the ride wins a new bike or $5,000.  This event brings a lot of support to the town and to the charities.

Along with the history and southern coastal charm of Key West come great and quaint places to stay.  There are historic inns from the 19^th century that have been made available for the visiting guest(s).  Most of the lodging is in “Old Town” and is walking distance to everything.  The island architecture of Key West’s homes makes for a warm and relaxing stay - perfect for the romantic couple and also great for the single visitor that just wants to get away.         

With being right on the water, activities include boating, fishing, diving, snorkeling and sunning.  Reefs are close by and just a short boat ride away to start your dive or snorkel trip.  Sailing is great past-time in Key West and one can easily charter a sailboat or catamaran to take a trip around the island. 

For dining, Key West has over 200 restaurants to serve even the most distinguished of visitors.  One can find cuisine catering to Cuban, Jamaican and even European fare.  Fresh seafood is obviously a staple in Key West and is found and served in a multitude of ways.  You can always find an oyster bar and a frosty beverage to help make those warm days just slightly warm.  Nightlife is quite healthy in Key West and there are plenty of watering holes to enjoy oneself after the sun goes down.

Water slides have come a long way since I was growing up!  The Durango Drop is an extreme 8-story slide that only takes 6 seconds for most kids to get down to the pool.Of course there are water rides for the little people too like the wave pool, Kiddie River and playground.  Other extreme slides are called the “Point of No Return” and the “Vortex”.  The “Point of No Return” is 10 stories up and only takes 5 seconds to get down and the “Vortex” hurls kids down a tight flume at high speeds creating the feeling of being inside a tornado.
