Planning a wedding can be a logistical nightmare in the best of circumstances with getting everyone together in a familiar spot at the same time. Find all the joys of childhood sledding without the effort to take a second run. This new and fast growing winter sport is suitable for all age groups and doesn’t require expensive equipment. Do remember to dress warmly and remember to pocket a kerchief to wipe the tears from your eyes after a cold, exhilarating whoosh down 750 feet of groomed tubing lanes.

Deep Creek Lake Maryland has so many things to do and places to go that you won’t have a chance to be succumbed by cabin fever. Ahhhh. The kids are back in school. Schedules are pumping along at an even pace. Mother Nature is starting to paint her Fall tapestries. And I’m sitting at work in the middle of the week wishing I could run away for some midweek ‘me’ time. 

As I ponder where my escape would take me, I feel cool air brushing strands of hair across my face, sounds of birds calling out to their flock, waves slowly licking the rock and earthen surfaces that contain them. I think I even hear the clang of fishing boats as they sway and bob in the dappled sunlight.

Low and behold, I open my eyes to discover Martha’s Vineyard and all the attributes that make it a highly desired destination to travelers who crave a rich history, endless beaches, a thriving culture and most of all an affordable getaway to six quaint island towns like Vineyard Haven.

For now, this is the life. My life. I think I’ll be coming back often. I might even invite a friend or two to see for themselves the beauty of “me” time in Martha’s Vineyard.

As a little girl, I grew up fishing with my maternal grandparents and one aunt on the banks of small ponds owned by my grandparents’ neighbors and friends. I was always armed with my trusty bamboo pole, red and white bobber weighted down with some lead weights, and a can of squirmy worms for bait with the anticipation of fresh fried fish accompanied by cornmeal coated fried zucchini for dinner.

Now, living in Colorado, I have a very fashionable pair of

chest waders to go with my river boots and have accompanied a friend who doubles as a fly fishing guide on several occasions. This weekend, I saw many a fisherman wading in the cold mountain waters awaiting their next catch only to carefully place it back in the stream in preparation of the next person’s moment of pride and joy as most of the fishing here is ‘catch and release’. Apparently, they have caught the same ‘mountain fever’ when fly fishing off the Florida Keys that precludes one from expecting dinner at the end of the day!

But, if you’re like me and want to eat what you catch, then I’d suggest a professional fishing charter into the deep waters for your first Florida Keys adventure. This year has been news making for the entire country when it comes to the drought. Half of the counties in the United States are currently affected. What wasn’t expected on my recent trip back to visit family in Iowa was to hear there were burn bans in Iowa! All my life of growing up there, I have never heard such a thing. Now as I research beach vacation activities I discover that during sea turtle season on Oak Island, North Carolina there, too, are fire bans on the beach! Who knew?

Of course, I became curious to learn more interesting turtle facts and how a prohibition of beach fires can help to protect them.

Knowing how frustrating it is to live in a vacation destination and see people unknowingly (I assume and profoundly hope) throw a cigarette out their car window in an area with strict fire bans in place, I thought it might behoove me to get the skinny on other town ordinances that affect the Oak Island environment.

 
In my quest I discovered that I can become a tried and true beach lover

•  enjoying interactive ways to preserve this island’s beautiful beaches.

 And like any inquisitive, young child, I proceeded to become fascinated with just how sand dunes work in the first place and how my newfound preservation techniques apply.

 Where Oak Island and Colorado have some burn ban issues in common, there is so much to learn about this intriguing environment and our ability to influence it – in a positive, preservation-style way – that I may just have to stay a while. A long, long while.

Get up close and personal with Hawaiian green sea turtles. See rare moray eels, octopus, lobsters and sea horses in the Living Reef. Visit Hammerhead Harbor to watch these amazing animals search for prey. And get hands-on in The Tide Pool where you can literally touch harmless sealife. Sit back in your beach chair, bury your toes in the sand, close your eyes and imagine the architecture you’d find in and around the Miami area. Probably the most unique architectural feat that was single-handedly constructed is the Coral Castle Museum. However he did it, Ed Leedskalnin took his construction secrets to his grave leaving scientists and thinkers alike to debate their theories on his methodologies.
 
The Miami Beach Architectural District (also known as the Art Deco District) is an example of obvious design reasoning – create and market Miami’s tropical paradise. This area takes you back in to the roaring 20’s and 30’s resort architecture. Vibrant colors and a consistent Mediterranean Revival style from the 20’s and the Art Deco style from the 30’s make up 3 distinct neighborhoods; the seasonal hotel area, the commercial area and a residential area.

But architecture from the 20’s and 30’s and one man’s quest to replicate the Egyptian’s secrets aren’t really the historical representation of this city’s past that I was looking for. Travelling on I discover Fort Dallas. It was established on the Miami River around 1836 in order for the Navy to aid in the ongoing unrest of the Seminole Indians. The “barracks” remained on their original site until 1924 before being disassembled and reassembled at its current location in Lummas Park.
 

The William Wagner House is not only a unique reflection of Miami’s antebellum era it is also thought to be the oldest house in the county. Construction geeks will relish the hand-hewn lumber with its mortise and tenon joints. History buffs will see how one of the area’s first residents lived and worked. It seems fitting that this home was also relocated to Lummas Park since William Wagner had at one time operated a sutler’s store near the location of the original Fort Dallas.

The man made reef was expanded in 1997 with a sunken vessel, The St. Anthony’s Wreck, and again in 2009 with 1,500 concrete modules. All of this I took in consideration when planning our next big family vacation. And by “big” I mean 13 adults and nine kids age seven and under. The peaceful elegance and intriguing scenery of the island’s beaches allows locals and guests the opportunity to experience the gift that Mother Nature has bestowed upon the treasured island of Maui.

Beginning in the 1700s Murrells Inlet made its debut in the rice industry and had cultivated close to 47 million pounds of rice by 1850. This lucrative business made many South Carolina rice planters very wealthy including one Joseph Alston, who eventually became South Carolina’s governor. To many people’s surprise, during this time, rice planters in South Carolina became wealthier and more powerful than their tobacco and sugar plantation counterparts in the southeast. Unfortunately, the success and wealth of rice plantations came to an abrupt halt in 1863 when the Civil War intruded on the shores of Murrells Inlet. Confederate troops were secretly using the inlet as a port to send products such as cotton to England in exchange for medicine, food and other war supplies. When the Union learned of this their warships attacked the confederate blockade destroying part of the inlet and a large portion of the rice industry. Although no one could predict this at the time, between the Civil War and a series of hurricanes that followed, South Carolina’s rice industry would be completely gone by 1916.

Following the Civil War, South Carolina in general and Murrells Inlet specifically got into the commercial fishing industry and by 1914 were offering fishing excursions as a recreational opportunity for guests and locals of Murrells Inlet. The commercial fishing industry became an advantageous market for Murrells Inlet although it never became the behemoth that the rice plantations developed into. As a couple decades past on and the Great Depression assaulted the majority of the United States, Murrells Inlet had a bit of good fortune in New York millionaire, Archer Milton Huntington when he rolled into town. Huntington had plans to build an audacious compound for himself and his wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Mr. Huntington commissioned all local workers to develop his 9,000 acre estate including brick masons, carpenters, landscapers and painters. Not only did he spend millions of dollars on his homestead, he also funded a community center, medical clinic and church for the people of Murrells Inlet.

Murrells Inlet is a hidden gem of abundant history and enchanting stories for all ages to enjoy. Just 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet is an ideal family vacation destination.

Maui, Hawaii has long been a popular vacation destination for families, students and couples. 1.) November through March is Hawaii’s rainy season. If you are heading to the island during this time bring clothing that you want to get caught in the rain with. Rain coats, umbrellas or water proof sport jackets are lightweight and easy to pack. Although the last few years have been quite dry during what is suppose to be the rainy season, it never hurts to be prepared!

2.) The summer months are usually very hot and humid for Hawaii and her sister islands. Stick to lightweight t-shirts and tanks during this season and lightweight shorts or capris. Ideal fabrics are cotton, linen (if you don’t care about a few wrinkles) and knitwear.

3.) Although rare, hurricane season in Hawaii lasts from June to November. Stick to the same wardrobe as the summer months but be prepared for a few showers and possible strong winds.

Known as “The Soul of Seattle,” Pike Place Market was originally brought to life on August 17, 1907 when farmers brought their produce directly to the people of Seattle who showed up in overwhelming numbers. The farmers’ goods were sold out by 11:00 am thus beginning a supply and demand market that opened its own building with every space filled by the end of that first year. As early as 4500BC, coastal cultures like in China, Greece and many others utilized scuba diving as a way to gather food, and participate in commerce and warfare.  These cultures are not the only ones who saw scuba as a convenient way to attack their enemies. In the Trojan Wars, divers would incapacitate enemy ships by cutting holes into their boats or cutting anchor ropes. Greek history tells of fishermen who would “dive” into deeper parts of the ocean by using a heavy boulder to sink into the waters. The physical dangers of diving without protection were not known at the time. Greece also notes the first instance of utilizing diving in warfare during the siege at Syracuse. Around 360BC, according to the writings of Aristotle, attempts to provide divers with a breathing mechanism were made in the form of a kettle that was filled with air and lowered down with the diver.

From 1300 through the late 1500s and mid 1600s, many creators like Leonardo Da Vinci, Guglielmo de Loreno and others perfected the idea of a diving bell and scuba suit. The credit of the first true diving bell goes to de Loreno. Of course, many advances and improvements to scuba have been made since the time of these thinkers. Now diving is safe and can be enjoyed as a leisure activity for people of all ages. While many diving spots have popped up on the map around the world, some of the most glorious waves will be caught at Kihei, Maui.

The highly competitive grant was the only one awarded in the state of Florida.  Community leaders and program partners have toured St. Lucie County and the Fort Pierce area looking for public, educational, manufacturing and industrial facilities in addition to commercial structures to be included in what they have termed the “Green Mile District.”

The eastern edge this recent closure affected Cape San Blas on Florida Panhandle’s Forgotten Coast. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection(DEP) confirmed reports of tar balls near Pensacola, FL, however local Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency are monitoring the air and water quality closely in Cape San Blas, and so far the beaches remain beautiful and open. According to a statement by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman, Rodney Barreto, “Both the water and fish have been thoroughly tested and Florida’s seafood is certified good to eat and great tasting.”

Moving to Colorado after living in the Midwest farmland for many years has made me realize that you can have a vacation nearly every weekend when places are within easy driving distance.  It seems like the same would be true for people in and around the Deep Creek Lake area.  Iowa Farmlands?  Not so much.  I used to have to drive at least 40, if not 90 miles, just to reach the nearest interstate that would then take me another sizeable distance to some place you actually wanted to visit!

Just a shed

Well, it turned out this “cabin” was really a tin tool shed with half of the square footage taken up by lawn and garden equipment.  The other half, albeit tin on the outside, was very cabin-esque on the inside.   Although I ended up renting the space and loving the summer I spent there, it definitely wasn’t what I expected when I heard it called a “cabin.”  Pigeon Forge cabin rentals offered by Cabins USA, on the other hand, are the opposite of what my cabin was!  They’re not only comfortable and luxurious on the inside; complete with all the amenities of home, they’re also cabins on the outside!

                History buffs and speed demons can step back in time with a ride in the Bird of Paradise.  This open cockpit biplane built in 1928 is sure to please the thrill seeker.  I will offer this one bit of advice, however. It may sound good to have the wind in your hair until you land and have to pull a comb through it!  One of my first flights was in an open cockpit airplane when I was about six years old and the most lasting memory I still have (many years later) is the drama of getting my long hair combed out upon landing.  Don’t let this be the only memory you take away from this high-flying experience.  Instead take away a certificate and photo that is awarded to all who fly in this historical machine.

                If staying on land is more your family’s style then be sure and plan a trip to the Track Family Recreation Center.  Plenty of action for kids of all ages whether you’re a speed demon on the go-cart tracks or prefer the slower pace of miniature golf.  You’re family will have so much fun here they may even forget that there are beautiful beaches to play on too!

                Does your family enjoy music and want to take advantage of fewer crowds?  Then bring them down for the annual, 10 day Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival held every November.  Venues all along the coast offer up a unique opportunity to see and hear songwriters perform the songs that became some of America’s biggest hits.  Songwriters perform in restaurants, bars and hang-outs along the coast, so porta-potty festival this is not!  Add to that little to no cover charge and you have the makings for a wonderful beach vacation full of Orange Beach, Alabama Concerts.  What a great way to get the wiggles out before hunkering down for the winter.

Cellardoor Winery at the Vineyard is only 5 miles from Camden Harbour. The winery sits on a sixty acre farm and has been around for almost a century. Come enjoy the complimentary wine tastings they offer everyday throughout the year. Why not try a wine making class? Class fees are based on whether you want to take home a kit for future winemaking.

Winterport Winery’s tasting room is now open for their ninth season. Go by and sample some of their “local flavor”. The winery is closed January through February so the summer and fall seasons are perfect for stopping by.

What is your favorite thing about the Pacific Northwest?  We’re thinking it is time for a visit, we’ve got a list of things that we’d like to do!

While I have been to the area quite a few times, there’s always more to see and do whether you enjoy an active vacation or just relaxing.   Next time I travel to the area, I want to experience a luxury Mexico vacation.   Not just a resort that offers the beach, pools and all the other goods.  I want a resort that’s tailored to the experience of the area and luxury.

Now, normally, I would write about the beach and what to do in the area. But this place is different and I wanted to share a little bit about Hacienda res Rios.  On 326 acres in a pristine nature park, located on the Riviera Maya, you’ll find this new resort that opened just over a year ago.  This is not just your average all-inclusive resort.  A short forty five minutes from Cancun’s airport, you’ll find the fusion of modern travel and Mexican and Mayan traditions.  This place offers an experience so unique, you’ll want to return.

The exclusive, eco-friendly retreat is in the heart of the Riviera Maya.  You’ll find jungle, mangrove forest and coastal dunes.  There are ten freshwater springs, a sandy white beach and three rivers as the name suggests.  Alongside all this, you’ll find a marina and yacht club, an equestrian center, convention center, estuary and nature park, bird sanctuary and botanical garden.  There’s also a spa, a beach club, and a Mayan cultural center.

As you ponder all that which this resort has to offer, think on the activities available.  Each guest has access to the Nature park and the beach, but you can also kayak or snorkel, take fitness classes or even yoga.  Maybe you like the directed activities by the pool, or enjoying a show in the evening.  There are even bicycles to ride!

Looking at the list of tours available, you can take guided tours through the property and learn more about the cenotes or the Plant Nursery, maybe kayak one of the rivers or jo along the Nature Park.  You can take a class and experience Tequila tasting or wine tasting.  Maybe learn how to carve fruit or learn to prepare some dishes native to the area. There’s so much to do that I can’t even list it all and you don’t have to leave the property to experience it all.

I’m not sure when I’ll be returning to the Riviera Maya, but this would be the ultimate destination.  Maybe at the next big anniversary I’ll be able to make the journey.

My husband and I were both raised in the very deep south and had limited exposure to snow, and literally no experience with snow deep enough to ski in. One day, several years ago, our close friends decided they wanted to go skiing and invited us along for the trip. They have been skiing most of their lives, as they both grew up in Colorado and had only been in our area for a handful of years. Even those of us way down south know there is skiing in Colorado, but they wanted to ski in Idaho.

My husband and I made quite a few jokes about skiing on hills of mashed potatoes, not realizing there were ski areas in Idaho. We have now taken many Idaho ski trips together and I can confidently say there are numerous ski resorts, none of which makes their snow out of mashed potatoes.

The Brundage Mountain Resort has become one of our absolute favorite ski areas in Idaho. One of the great things, especially as our families have expanded, is the amazing room rates that are so close by. The town of McCall has several nationally recognized hotel chains that have very reasonable prices. Compared to many ski towns we have visited, the rates are unbelievable. The great rates have been one reason we have been able to continue our skiing traditions even in a less than perfect economy. Not only are the rooms affordable, but Brundage also has several ways to save on skiing as well. We can definitely afford this Idaho ski resort.

The important parts for those who are interested in Idaho ski resorts, however, are the mountain specifics of Brundage. After all what good are deals if it isn’t fun to ski in Idaho, right? The base elevation is about 5,800 feet and the summit elevation is just over 7,600 feet. There is a vertical drop of 1,800 feet and more than 40 trails and about 1,500 acres just perfect for skiing. There is plenty of room at Brundage for the entire family to have a great time.

As we have collectively moved from beginner status to skiers who are pretty good we have taken advantage of several of the ski classes the resort has to offer. Of course, at first, my husband and I took the very basic getting to know snow classes but later we moved on to some of the more advanced lessons for the more difficult runs and have even consulted with professional skiers for personalized tips. As our children have grown, we have used the daycare center available at the resort, and our son just recently decided he wanted to take a few snowboarding lessons. The husband and I are still trying to decide if that is something we should tackle for ourselves, but it is definitely an opportunity I’m happy our son wants to take advantage of.

We are certainly looking forward to another great annual Idaho family ski vacation!

Playing in the snow makes me happy, and if you like it just a little bit, then this may be the ideal place for your next winter vacation.  Yes, some people really do plan vacations to be where there is snow and sun at the same time.  Not only is Oregon beautiful country, but there you’ll find snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding including cross country trials and all the shopping, restaurants and activities to fill the time in between.

Just so happens that just a short drive from Sunriver is one of North America’s largest ski resorts.  Mt. Bachelor Resort is home to some 3700 acres of boarding and skiing fun.  For a reasonable value snow nuts will enjoy some varied terrain that is sure to please all levels of competence.  There are 71 groomed trails and 13 lift facilities with current plans to expand both lift operations and trails in the near future.  Fifteen percent of the terrain is graded as Novice, 25% Intermediate and the other 60% is Advanced or Expert terrain.  What a great place to bring the whole family for sun and ski!  And did I happen to mention that on average the snow base is some 150-200 inches and that there’s 3,365 feet of vertical drop?

Feel like a totally new experience?  How about a dog sled ride?  Just imagine, riding in an Iditarod Dog Sled taking in the breathtaking views of the local mountain scenery. You could even plan for an overnight expedition.  Sledding and snowtubing sound like fun too?  Take some slides down the 800 foot ride in the Snowblast Tubing Park on the Mountain.

After all the fun, there are plenty of options for shopping or just hanging out.  But dining in the area leaves nothing to be desired.  There are many restaurants to choose from and something to satisfy the most discerning of palates.  Or if you want to stay in the privacy of your vacation rental in Sunriver Oregon, you can find groceries and goodies in town.

Not only is the area good for winter fun, sounds like it may be just as amazing in the summer.  Everything from biking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, golfing and so much more in the high desert of Oregon.   Sounds like a great place for the next family vacation whether it’s summer or winter.

Marco Island is a mere six miles in length and just four miles wide, but this little slice of heaven is not easily forgotten. In fact, if fishing, boating, and kayaking are three of your favorite words, it is likely that your first visit to the Island will become the first of many. While you visit – check out the wide variety of Marco Island Vacation Rentals on the island, you’re sure to find one within walking-distance of your charter office or marina.

The convenience factor itself is amazing. Imagine never being more than a mile or two from your condo or hotel, yet just moments away from some of the best fly fishing in the world. The lukewarm gulf temperatures of the backwater bay provide the perfect home for tarpon, snook, spanish mackerel, sea trout, and mangrove snapper. Secluded fishing holes are not hard to find, even during tourist season, since most of the visitors take their fishing offshore. Once you’ve had your fill of fishing – is that even possible? – you can experience a completely different type of boating adventure. How about taking a three hour ride on a 155 foot catamaran that will deliver you to Key West for the day? Getting there is truly half the fun when you are riding on one of these luxurious watercrafts. Fully air conditioned and equipped with big screen TVs, satellite television and a full bar, this is traveling in style. After swimming with the dolphins or enjoying the historical sights of Key West, you’ll be safely returned to Marco Island. That’s a lot of paradise to handle, all in one vacation. Now you are beginning to see why Marco Island has the ability to become an annual family getaway.

Did I mention the dinner sunset boat trips, the superb shelling, or the fact that there are over 50 top rated restaurants and over 100 retail shops on the island? Marco Island – all the comforts of home and the ability to catch a 200 lb fish right in your back yard. That’s what I call a vacation. How about you?

Although all of Hawaii is breathtaking, Wailea is one of our favorite beaches on the Big Island.  Wailea Bay offers amazing snorkeling, sunbathing, sunsets, and much more!  A lava rock formation in the bay attracts a variety of fish, so be sure to bring your snorkeling gear!  In the winter, enjoy watching surfers perfect their craft near the south end of the beach.  Wailea Bay is a state park, and guests can enjoy showers, restrooms, and changing areas on site.

While visiting the Big Island, be sure to check out Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  Experience the world’s most active volcano, hardened lava as far as the eye can see, and much more!  Truly a sight to be seen!

The island covers about 100 square miles, and is divided up into several small towns.  Each town has a distinct personality, our favorite being Vineyard Haven, also known as Tisbury.  The Vineyard Haven area is known for great shopping, dining, and is home to our favorite Martha’s Vineyard Restaurant.

With about 15,000 residents year round, and over 100,000 residents in the summer, activity in the area swells in the summer, but the island is worth a visit any time of year.  We recommend avoiding the area around the 4th of July if crowds aren’t your thing, as this is the island’s busiest weekend of the year.

But Yountsville, a small village in Napa Valley, is one of the area’s highlights. The town is known for its world-class restaurants and has earned the unofficial title of ‘Culinary Capital of the Napa Valley’. The fare includes French, Italian, and Pacific Rim with a multitude of fine dining and an unmatched surroundings in Yountville. Located within walking distance of the town’s luxurious hotels and inns, there is plenty of activities, shopping, and wineries to choose from.

There are several noteworthy inns from which to pick with central locations that will allow you a better opportunity to tour the valley. There are three wineries in town but customizing a wine tour is the way to go. With several hundred wineries in Napa Valley many are open to the public. No matter your taste in wine, there are several wineries to explore and learn about wine.

Now that the snow has thawed, Colorado locals are hanging up their skis and dusting off their summer gear to enjoy the beauty, adventure, and fun that the state has to offer during the summer months.  A favorite activity of both locals and visitors alike, is taking a step back into Colorado’s wild past.  Visiting historic landmarks and vacationing at dude ranches are two of the most popular ways to do this.  Colorado has a rich and colorful history, take a step into any mountain town, and you’ll see the signs of an era long gone.  Bars owned by men like Doc Holliday that still have bullets lodged in the cieling, historic homes, abandoned mines are abundant throughout the mountain region.

Another fun way to get a taste of old Colorado is to take part in one of the state’s dude ranch vacations.  The state is home to over 30 guest ranches, varying in size and number of amenities.  Some of our favorites even feature spa services to enjoy after a long day on the trail!  (Okay, maybe not completely authentic, but ranching is hard work!)  Most ranches provide amazing accommodations, three meals a day, and a variety of ranching activities to enjoy.  These trips are an excellent way to get the whole family engaged in the vacation experience, with something for everyone.  You can participate in ranch activities at your leisure, so you still have time to take in the amazing scenery or go play in the river for an afternoon or two.

Stretching from Cape Fear, NC to Georgetown, SC – the Grand Strand features a wide variety of attractions, activities and historic sites – there’s something for everyone.

The towns that lie within the Grand Strand zone have long and colorful histories, and are great places to visit while using your Myrtle Beach vacation rental as your home base.

Murrels Inlet

A historic low-country rice growing community, Murrells Inlet is now the Seafood Capital of South Carolina.  This is reason enough for me to want to visit.  Located just 15 miles south of Myrtle Beach its a quick trip for lunch and a walk through Huntington Beach State Park.

Surfside Beach

Six miles north of Murrels Inlet and 9 miles south of Myrtle Beach lies the quiet community of Surfside Beach, SC.  While you’re there – check out the Surfside Pier, originally built in 1953 it has been rebuilt 3 times due to hurricane damage – most recently in 1993.  You can rent a pole and try your luck for some of the native species in the area such as Amberjack, Cobia, Flounder and Black Drum.

Myrtle Beach

This mecca for beachgoers offers something for everyone.  There are over 100 golf courses in the near vicinity and the piers, restaurants and beach combing is unparalleled.  A friend told me about “Broadway At The Beach” which is over 350 acres of dining, shopping and attractions.  This place is HUGE!  From a water park to an Imax theatre – this complex will offer you something to keep the young and old happy.

If you’re into musical theatre – then I hear Playhouse Square is the place to visit. They have amazingly eclective performances available from the Laurie Berkner band (one of my kids’ faves) to Hal Holbrook playing Mark Twain! I had no idea!

The one thing I KNEW about Cleveland was that it is home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – a must visit for any music lover. There are exhibits from the past and present of rock & roll – and at present you can visit a Motown exhibit and a “Right Here Right Now” exhibit that features up and comers –such as My Chemical Romance and Paramore.

So where do I eat if I’m going to do the whole “Cleveland Experience” thing. I plugged the details into UrbanSpoon.com and the neighborhoods alone were pretty diverse. I chose the Rock & Roll Hall of fame as my home base and the “Best Restaurant” was the Key West Café – which actually sounds like my kind of place. Top 5 restaurants near the Hall of fame that I’d try were:

Entertainment is great for my theatre-lovin’ heart

Where do I stay? There are a few different choices – and the downtown area is full of the chain hotels that cater to business travelers and visitors to the big attractions. You could step a few miles away from the action and try somewhere like the Glidden House. This hotel is just a few miles away from lots of things to do in Cleveland, but looks elegant and inviting – without the stress and pace of being where everyone else is at the same time.

Overall I think I might have to try a bit harder to make it to that conference – Cleveland looks like a fun place to visit – even by myself. There’s a ton to do and see and some great food to be found.
